Little Gump Becomes 5th Ranger To Win Coveted Calder Trophy
Montreal, Que. Lome (Gump) Worsley, goalkeeper of the New York Rangers, nosed out Toronto Maple Leafs’ Gordie Hannigan for the honor of the National Hockey League’s outstanding rookie of 1952-53. The 23-year-old Worsley polled a total of 41 points to Hannigan’s 36. Six points back of Hannigan was his teammate Leo Boivin who finished third in the balloting with a total of 30 points. In addition to winning the Calder Memorial Trophy which is awarded each-season to “the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League,” Worsley also pockets $1,000 from the National Hockey League. Keep It Up Dear Sirs, Having been a reader of THE HOCKEY NEWS since your first publication, I figured it was about time I expressed my thanks and appreciation for a job well done. I moved to Penticton from Saskaton, Sask., about three years ago and was lost with no hockey here to follow. I thumped a few news counters until I got someone interested into bringing The Hockey News into this district. Since that time many more have jumped on the wagon and The Hockey News has many ardent fans here now. Howe Joins Morenz and Shore, Winning Hart Twice In A Row
MONTREAL, Que.— Hockey’s top individual award, the Hart Trophy, was won for the second year in succession by Gordie Howe of Detroit. In carrying the award which is presented annually to “the player adjudged to be most valuable to his team,” the big Detroit winger also received a cheque for $1,000 from the National Hockey League. Howe had more than twice as many points as his closest rivals, Al Rollins of Chicago Black Hawks and Red Kelly of Detroit. The three-time N.H.L. scoring champion polled a total of 5 8 points out of a possible 90 in winning the trophy.
