Jackie Gordon Cops Top Honors In Playoff Race

NEW YORK, N.Y.— Jackie Gordon, veteran center of the league and Calder Cup Champions, Cleveland Barons, was the leading scorer of the recently” completed American Hockey League playoffs. The smooth skating playmaker, who is noted for his ability to avoid the penalty box, had 11 points on 4 goals and 7 assists in 11 games played. Danny Lewicki of Pittsburgh was second with 10 points in 10 games, followed by teammates Bobby Solinger and Willy Marshall each of whom had 9 points. Bob Chrystal and Eddie Olson of Cleveland were next with 8 each. Chrystal, young Baron defense star, scored the only three Cleveland goals in the last two playoff games, one of them being the championship winner in overtime in the 1-0 victory which clinched the title. Tacoma Drops Out; Regina Rumored In

Despite denials throughout the past hockey season, the Tacoma Rockets have dropped out of the Western Hockey Lesgue, leaving Seattle as the lone United States team in the league. Coach Muzz Patrick, who had been one of those maintaining the club would remain in the loop despite all the rumours, stated that “We’re not making enought money.’’ It was also reported that Regina would be admitted to the loop to replace the Rockets although Denny Eversen, representing that city at the league’s annual meeting, said that he was there to discuss only the ‘Advantageous points.’…

Kelly Cops Byng For Second Time In Three Years

MONTREAL, Que.— For the second time in three years the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy was won by Red Kelly, Detroit Red Wings’ All-Star defenseman. Kelly polled 80 points out of a possible 90 in carrying off the award which is presented annually to “the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability during the season.” The redheaded Irishman, who has been a standout performer ever since he broke into the National Hockey League in 1947, was the first choice of the 18 selectors. He was the second choice of the remaining five. Points were awarded on the basis of five for a first choice, three for a second and one for a third. A player receiving 18 first-place votes…

Ten Players Score Twenty or More Goals in ’53

MONTREAL, Que.— Gordie Howe, the prolific scoring wizard of the Detroit Red Wings, repeated this season as scoring leader of the National Hockey League. In fact he took the honors for the third year in a row, a feat never before accomplished in the major league. In so doing, he scored 49 goals, the fourth year in a row that, he had managed to pot 20 or more goals. The feat of scoring 20 or more for four straight campaigns ranks him alongside Ted Lindsay and of course, Maurice Richard as one of the loop’s most consistent 20 goal scorers. Lindsay has turned the trick seven straight times whereas Montreal’s fabulous Rocket has nine 20 goal seasons in a row behind him. This year Lindsay was second high sniper in the NHL as…
