N.Y. Rookies To Get Test For 1953-54

NEW YORK, N.Y.— Since the Rangers now have little reason for existence other than to play for next year’s salaries, the time has come to decide who’s going to be paid in 1953-54. As one means of looking into the future, the youth movement will be. carried to an extreme in the closing weeks of the season. At least seven amateurs, and possibly many more, will be given NHL trials. “We’re lining up younger players to get a look at,” Manager Frank Boucher pointed out. “This is as good a time as any, as long as their trial with us doesn’t interfere with a league playoff. •THIS COLUMN MADE brief passing reference to an array of enquiries launched by the Canadian Press concerning present and past hockey players, and if that industrious bureau gets intelligent answers to some of these, we’ll be surprised. In fact we’re surprised if the bureau really expects intelligent answers on certain comparative points. For instance, the bureau wishes to know who is the craftiest player in the League today, a query that requires considerable thought before you reach the conclusion that you don’t know, because it’s an open question, as to just what constitutes chaftiness. But when the query blandly enquires how this crafty player of today compares, for guile, with Frank Nighbor, Newsy Lalonde and Nels Stewart, it gets downright silly. Because not one-tenth of those writing hockey today saw Lalonde…
