Toronto Star Value Received—In Shirts and Socks “WELL, sir,” chuckled John Ross Roach, the pride of Port Perry in his goaling days, “the most money I ever got for playing amateur hockey was $10. And I didn’t get it in cash. That was from the old Granites. To make sure nobody would have any evidence against me, they gave me a voucher on a clothing store. Since I lost $12 in wages through being away from my job on that trip, I guess you could say I was a pure amateur.’’ Aura Lee seniors weren’t so sticky. They wanted Roach to play goal for them, and mentioned $1,000 which John Ross could have without the co-operation of a toggery shop. Roach had played for Bill Marsden’s Aura Lee junior team. It was a stiff shock to the Detroiters, who had ideas of becoming the first team ever to win five straight NHL titles, and were heavily favored to do so. Then, just as they were brooding over their lot, they…
Labadie’s Scoring Spree May Help Him Turn Pro
NEW YORK. N.Y.— The record scoring spree Michel Labadie had in one Quebec Junior League game has earned for him another shot with the Rangers. Not long after the Citadel right winger scored eight times against St. Catharines’ Teepees, general manager Frank Boucher recalled him to New York for the last two games of his pro trial. Labadie, who was to start on Bones Raleigh’s right against the Canadiens on Jan. 28, previously came up with teammate Aggie Kukulowicz around the holidays. Aggie was more impressive in their first game here and, as a result, was taken on the road to complete his trial. Labadie was sent home after the one game. With Ed Slowinski still out with a broken right foot and with his replacement, Aldo Guidolin, just so-so, Labadie now has…
