This Guy Was Really Hot--His Skates Kicked Sparks
TORONTO, Ont.— Joe Prinieau, coach of the Leafs, was calling it one of the strangest things he’d ever seen happen on a hockey rink. Strange here, not meaning funny because at the time there wasn’t anything humorous about it. It happened in Boston in a Sunday game between the Bruins and the Leafs and Primeau can’t remember the Bruin player involved but can still picture him skating in front of the Leaf bench with a trail of sparks streaming behind one skate. “It looked as though he’d been wired,” Primeau chuckles now “but actually he’d gone right through the ice and was skating on the cement. He just kept right on going for the gate and off the ice.” It wasn’t an isolated case. The cement was growing through the ice sheet in lots…

Ailsby Rates Francis Best For Vancouver
SEATTLE, Wash.— The most valuable player in the Western Hockey League, in the eyes of Lloyd Ailsby, coach of the Seattle Bombers, is Vancouver’s goalie, Emile (The Cat) Francis. “Nobody in the league,” said Ailsby, “has given us more trouble than this fellow. We’ve beaten the Canucks only once this year, and I’d say he’s the man most responsible. “Our club has plenty of chances to score heavily against him,” h· continued, “but he’s too fast and frisky. No wonder they call him ‘The Cat’.” Francis has four shutouts so far this year, and has kept hi· average well under three goals a game for most the season.…

Gump May Get Janitor Job
NEW YORY, N.Y.— Wearing a new brace on his injured right knee, Chuck Rayner rejointed the team in Guelph. No matter how sound, physically, he may be, he can’t expect to get back into the nets immediately. Gump Worsley has been too good as a replacement. In the last four games, he allowed but five goals…Until they ran into two shutouts, the Rangers had scored 23 times in five preceding games. They’ve been blanked only three times—all on the road…Despite the shutouts, Paul Ronty continues to lead all NHL centers in scoring with 36 points…Renewed fan interest in the Rangers, noticed when the New Yorkers beat Montreal (7-0) and Detroit (3-2) before leaving town, is to be further demonstrated on Jan. 24-25.…
