Flyers Need Lengthy Win Streak To Catch Front-Running Dukes
GUELPH. Ont.— Unless Barrie Flyers can launch a sensational winning streak in the New Year Toronto Marlboros appear destined to breeze to their second straight Ontario Hockey Association junior “A” title. Flyers are the only team in a position to give Marlboros a fight and they haven’t been able to close the gap between second and first place in recent weeks. Marlboros went into the New Year with an eight-point advantage over the Fivers. St. Michael’s Majors, a team that was expected to fight for leader ship every inch of the way, has fallen badly off the pace. Although still in third place at year’s end they were six full games behind the Dukes. Even six games might not be too much of a deficit to overcome—not in junior hockey anyway but Marlboros are…
Sid Abel Praises Rookie Rearguard
Armstrong put In three seasons with the Stratford team, and then in his third season the Bruins gave him a brief taste of major league competition. They played him at defense in a two-game series with the Toronto Maple Leafs late in the year. Last year Armstrong was moved up to Hershey of the American league for a brushing up under Johnny Crawford, then the coach of the Bears but now a radio commentator for Bruins’ games. A Big Boy From Toronto After Hershey was eliminated from the American League playoffs last spring, he was called to Boston, and he played the last five games of the Bruins’ Stanley Cup series with the Montreal Canadiens. His work in that series won a regular job for him this year, a job in which he has…
Ivan’s Switch Not New Hitch Testing Marty For Future Party
DETROIT, Mich.— Even with a rookie goalie, Glen Hall, subbing for injured Terry Sawchuk, the Red Wings kept rolling along through December with defeat only something which those with long memories could recognize. For more than a month the Detroiters hadn’t lost a game as they stepped toward the 1953 portion of the schedule. In the meantime they had ticked off 15 games, all wins and ties enough to cause research into the record for such endeavors. The mark was set at 23 by the Boston Bruins of 1940-41, a total the Wings couldn’t approach unless they continued to shy away from defeats until Jan. 18. Boston had 15 victories and eight ties in its strings, and Detroit has been approaching the tie portion. In going 15 in a row, the Wings had eight…
Playing the Field
Dinner With Tommy Ivan Little Tommy Ivan, coach of the Detroit Red Wings, was sitting in the hotel dining room in Montreal recently. He eats when the players eat, though not necessarily with them, and they Invariably eat between four or five hours before a game. “Yes, we’re going better,” he said in answer to a question, “but I don’t know what’s going to happen with Sawchuk out of there. Funny thing, the way he got hurt. it was in practice and he stopped a shot with his foot. It hit him right here—” pointing to his foot below the instep—”where the pads didn’t protect him. Now he’s out for six and maybe seven games.” “How come you brought Ralph Almas up as a replacement?’he was asked. “Didn’t both you and Jack Adams…
