WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE
Veteran Helper Danny Sprout of the Seattle Bombers is the best playmaker among Western Hockey League Defensemen. The veteran rearguard has 20 assists to his credit to date four more than his closest rival. Men in The Box Roy Kelly of the Calgary Stampede is a good man to have on the ice when your team has a man advantage. To date he’s scored six times with the enemy shori handed. Rocket Now a Play-Maker, Six Behind His Best Year
MONTREAL, Que.— The greatest scorer in the history of hockey has turned play-maker and on him it looks good. Ever since Elmer Lach suffered a broken thumb, the famed Rocket has had to turn elsewhere for his points and since he was without “The Great Provider”, Richard decided that he’d fulfill that role until Elmer returned. A close look at the latest National Hockey League statistics reveals that Richard is leading the league in assists with 29 helpings to his credit. When you consider that Richard has never finished a season with more than 26 minutes, devoting his time usually to the business of banging in goals at a prolific rate, the fact that he already has 20 assists, vitually assures him of surpassing his best season, so far as helpings are concerned. When Canadiens…
THE FAN FORUM
Both Gentlemen Dear Sirs, This letter is to Jack Flood of Calumet, Quebec, who in a recent issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS boldly stated that the only time Maurice Richard ever fought was when someone was holding his “victim.” If I were Mr. Flood I would find out a few facts about as great a hockey player as Maurice Richard before making any such comments about him. He also stated that Gordie Howe was a fine gentlemanly player. If Mr. Flood looked on page nine of the December 13th issue of The Hockey News, he would notice that Howe has spent twenty-three minutes in the penalty box whereas Richard has spent twenty-two minutes in the same place. I realize that there is not a great deal of difference between these, but still Howe…
Balking Bolton Finally Reports to AHL Hornets
PITTSBURGH—The case of the reluctant defenseman has been solved with the reporting of Hugh Bolton to the Pittsburg Hornets of the American Hockey League. Bolton had originally been farmed to the Ottawa Senators of the Quebec Senior Hockey League by the Toronto Maple Leafs but the Montreal Canadiens refused to waive on the burly rearguard and he didn’t get to play a game as a Senator. Then the Leafs wanted to loan him to the Providence Reds of the AHL so that he would be available for recall but Bolton balked at the idea and remained at his Toronto home. Now all is forgiven and he has reported to the Hornets, for whom he played part of last season.…
