Norris’ Pre-Game Room Talk Worked
MONTREAL, Que.— Any reference to the debut of Sid Abel as coach of the Chicago Black Hawks must be referred to as golden splendor, not only for the Hawks themselves but also for the Chi fans who have been watching the bottom placers go through their paces for the last six seasons or so. After the first three games in which the Hawks came out on the right end on each occasion it became apparent around the League that they were going to be a team to be reckoned with. This could be their “Golden Year”. Cool, calm and collected. Sid Abel, a veteran of 11 actual playing campaigns with the Detroit Red Wings, reverted back to the role of rookie as he took up his place at the end of the…

“Can Biltmores Repeat?” Is Big Question In Ontario Junior Loop
GUELPH, Ont.— Pre-schedule predicting is a precarious practice at any time but it is even more hazardous in junior “A” hockey where the only resemblance to form is in the startling absence of this nebulous commodity. So, as the Ontario Hockey Association’s nine-team junior “A” loop opens another lengthy schedule, picking a winner or even a contender is about as simple as estimating how many ice crystals there are in the ice surface in Maple Leaf Gardens. But, barring injuries, fire, famine and/or disease Guelph Biltmores, Toronto Marl-roros and Toronto St. Michael’s Majors should be the three top teams in the loop that has produced a Memorial Cup team for the past two seasons. But they won’t necessarily finish in that order. Most Valuable The O.H.A, loop teed off on October 10. Between that date…
Radio Trouble for Reds and French Trouble Too
QUEBEC CITY—An off-beat scene of the “Listening In” fans for the first world series game: It’s the Providence (R.I.) Reds in a special bus enroute from their Grand Mere, Quebec training camp with a portable radio. Naturally at game time the radio wouldn’t work so veteran defenseman Pat Egan, in a fit of temper, hit it a slap that knocked some of the parts loose. Two teammates, Ray Powell and Charlie Scherza, made hasty repairs. The radio began working—but the only station they could get was one broadcasting the Dodger-Yankee duel in French. Of the 28 bus passengers, six understood when the announcer said “Jackie Robinson, Dodgers de Brooklyn, frappe un circuit.” Forward Raymond Laplante, born in Lachine, P.Q., was pressed into service as an interpreter. He came through with “Gil McDougald, Yankees de…
