Back of the Nets In AHL Cup Hunt
NEW YORK, N.Y.— The Providence Reds continued their spectacular playoff pace which enabled them to defeat Cleveland three in a row after losing the first two games, by taking the first two games of their series with Cincinnati to increase the victory string to five straight. This was accomplished by scores of 3-1 and 3-2 in a pair of thrillers in Providence. However, the Mohawks bounced back in the third contest, back in Cincinnati and stopped the Reds 3-1, to force a fourth game. The Reds won 6-2 and the series three games to one. The opening game of the Providence-Cincinnati series, played on Sunday, March 30, featured the Reds’ “Big Line”, of Paul Gladu, Barry Sullivan and the league’s leading scorer Ray Powell. Flaman Lead Series in Penalties with Eight
DETROIT, Mich. — Fern Flaman drew the most penalties, eight, in the Detroit-Toronto semifinal. The burly Maple Leaf defenseman was nicked for five minors in the first game (four of them in one period). After evading the penalty box in the next two contests, he drew three minors in the windup. Appropriately, Flaman finished the series in the box, getting his last penalty at 19:28 of the third period of the finale.…
Irvin Nips Newspaperman with Real Sharp Comeback
MONTREAL Que.— Coach Dick Irvin of the Montreal Canadiens was a little downcast after his club had lost to the Bruins 1-0 in the fifth game of the series. The puck seemed to be rolling and bouncing all night and it seemed to hop like a golf ball. A young newspaperman entered the room after the game and approached a disagreeable Mr. Irvin. “Are you going to call up anybody for the sixth game, Mr. Irvin,” he asked. “Yea. Ben Hogan,” replied Dick, “the only time I saw the puck tonight it looked like a golf ball in the air.”…
