Takes RW Berth On Fans’ Team By Eight Points
MONTREAL, Que.— ‘ Hockey fans from all over the continent have made the controversial choice between the two mightiest right wingers of them all in today’s National Hockey League, but the-margin was so close as they picked Detroit’s Gordie Howe over Maurice Richard of the Canadiens that it was practically a dead heat. Howe gained the honors on the fans’ All Star team — snapping the tape a scanty eight points ahead of the riproaring Rocket 1 It was a real photo finish In all respects. Ballots in THE HOCKEY NEWS All-Star Poll were checked again and again as the two staged a neck and neck fight right from the first returns. The Detroit bomber had a slight edge in first place votes — gaining 1,993 to Richard’s 1982 — but his 1721…
Edmonton Backer Has 3 Clubs On Co At Once
EDMONTON, Alta.— Like the horseman who rode off in all directions at once, little Jim Christiansen is having to spread himself mighty thin these days. The bouncy sportsman whose overpowering hobbies is sponsoring athletic teams around Edmonton, was in a considerable state of dither the other night, what with three of his teams competing for championships in different fields — two in hockey and one in senior men’s basketball. His Edmonton Oil Kings were locked in a junior playoff struggle with Regina Pats at the Saskatchewan capital; His Edmonton Mercurys were slugging it out with Ncnaimo Clippers in the senior Allan Cup eliminations; and his Meteors were playing Vancouver Clover Leafs in a basketball tussle out on the West Coast. Jim couldn’t be everywhere, so he elected to do his spectating at the…
Moose Jaw Juniors Should Be Nearly Intact Next Year
MOOSE JAW, Sask.— Murray Brown of the Times-Herald commends the junior Canucks for re-electing hardworking George Vogan as president and remarks that the majority of this season’s youthful team will be on deck next year. Murray thinks it’s doubtful if Chicago Hawks will allow starry Fred Hucul to stay in junior company another year. If they take him away it will be a blow to Canucks. That’s the one beef most fans have against the pro sponsorship. As soon as a player shows sign of real development he is whisked away to some pro club. A full term in junior company does no harm to a youngster and fans think the club and the customers who support it are entitled to some consideration. There’s no reason why juniors should be playing in pro…
