Boston, Toronto Only Others To Make No. 1 Team

MONTREAL, Que.— Detroit Red Wings dominated the All-Star voting among the fans just as thoroughly as they dominated the National Hockey League throughout the regular season, and when the ballots were all accounted for the Red Wings had walked off with four playing positions and the coaching spot as well to virtually monopolize the First Team. Toronto and Boston were the only other League clubs to get a look-in on the First All-Star Team, taking one position each. It was a different story on the Second Team, where the runner-up Maple Leafs took over three playing positions and the coaching nomination. Bobby Bauer New President Of Reorganized Kitcheners

KITCHENER, Ont.— The tail-end Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen of the O.H.A. senior loop are confident they won’t finish in the cellar in what should be an enlarged circuit next season. Incorporated last month, the club has been re-organized under the name of Kitchen-Waterloo Dutchmen Hockey Club Ltd., and Bobby Bauer, formerly of Boston Bruins and last season club manager, now becomes the president. Stepping down as coach is Walter (Punch) Scherer who ends a three-year term in that post to become hockey manager. No successor has been named but the team has lines out for a name player who should be able to make the Dutchies into a real contender. Lorne Popein, Regina Winger, Leading Rookie

REGINA, Sask.— Lorne Popein, starry young Regina Cap left-winger, has been named the rookie of the year in the Western Canada Senior Hockey League in balloting by sports writers and broadcasters in the four league cities. Previous winners were Hugh Coflin of Calgary Stampeders last year and Colin Kilburn of Edmonton Flyers in 1948-49. The 20-year-old Popein received 11 of the 15 votes cast. Murray Parker, Saskatoon Quaker defenseman, and forward Lloyd Ferguson of Edmonton each polled two votes. Brent McNab of Calgary and Jack Shupe of Saskatoon were the only other players eligible for the award. Popein was one of the few bright spots this season in the play of the Caps, who finished in the cellar. In 54 games he scored 21 goals and had 19 assists for 40 points to finish 26th…
