MONTREAL, Que.— Fought right down to the wire with as brilliant a display of goaltending as you’d ever want to see, the 1950-51 Vezina Trophy’ hunt wound up Sunday night with glory for one rookie — and bitter disappointment for another. Locked in a neck and neck race down the stretch, Toronto’s Al Rollins and Detroit’s Terry Sawchuck rose to the heights in the season’s final game—turning in a pair of brilliant Sunday shutouts that left the Leaf netminder winner of the hunt by a single goal. Although Rollins played in only 40 of his team’s games—against 70 for Sawchuk—the famed Trophy and the $1.000 cash bonus goes to the Leaf goalie. Because that is the way the Trophy is awarded. Schmitty Winds Up Greatest Season By Playing On One Leg
BOSTON, Mass.— Capt. Milton Schmidt of the Boston Bruins wound up what must have been one of his greatest regular seasons last Sunday, skating on one leg. Schmidt, one of the finest competitors in professional athletics, played the one-legged role in a determined one-man effort to put the Bruins in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He played the last two weeks of the regular campaign with a torn cartilage in his left knee. Over that period he played seven out of eight games. There isn’t much room in professional sports for sentiment, but there is considerable where Schmidt is concerned, as far as Boston is concerned.
