Duncan Fisher, netted from the hockey seas earlier this winter by the then hard-up Boston Bruins, may turn out to be ambergris—on skates. The muscular little right wing from Regina, Saskatchewan, who wasn’t good enough to keep a job with the New York Rangers, has been doing most satisfactory work for the Bruins. And in the opinion of Lynn Patrick, his coach, Fisher is still on the upswing as a National Leaguer. Hard work plus some nifty play has made Cal Stearns, burly center for the Kansas City Royals in the United States Hockey League, one of the most consistent point-getters. And at the 40-game mark Cal is setting the pace with a total of 56 points. He has tallied 19 goals and 37 assists. It’s still a long way before the season ends, but the 24-year-old center, who prefers to set up a scoring play than shoot himself, stands a good chance of being the second successive Kansas City player to be crowned scoring king. Last year Ray Powell won the honor and he is now a member of the Milwaukee Sea Gulls in the same loop. NEW IDEA Dear Sir, I am writing this letter in the interest of improving hockey from the fans’ viewpoint. Something should be done about the penalties in hockey today—they carry about as much weight as a bag of baloons. The players know this and therefore they are really not in the least afraid of drawing the minor penalty. The tripping, holding, charging part of hockey is slowly but surely wrecking the game especially the skating. There is nothing so crowd pleasing as seeing a solo dash down ice at top speed but I seriously believe that if it was tried as often today as some time back there wouldn’t be any hockey players left from injuries.
