Just Jawn’s Annual Statement Deciare Unimpressed Habitants
MONTREAL, Que.— It wasn’t too long ago that I wrote a story on Ted Lindsay, calling him the best player in the game at that time. Lindsay had just finished making a pile of dough—over $20,000 some say—he was driving a Cadillac and was getting to the point where instead of paying income tax he merely called up the U.S. and Canadian Governments and asked them how much they needed. Ted had led the league in scoring, made the first All-Star team broke, the loop record for assists and finished the season as the outstanding player on a team that won the Stanley Cup. That, we were sure, was enough to make him the outstanding player, at least it was in our book. But a few months later when the story was…
Goaling May Be Easy
DETROIT, Mich.— What easier a life could a goalie ask for than to spend almost 24 consecutive minutes at his post without a single shot to handle? That sounds like a cinch question. No saves, and thus no work. And, no goals against his record. But, first, listen to what Terrance Gordon Sawchuk has to say on the subject. Sawchuk is a first-hand expert. He experienced exactly that on Christmas Night when the Detroit Red Wing defense was so effective that the visiting New York Rangers were unable to give him a solitary shot to handle for a stretch of 24 minutes and 41 seconds, which included the entire second period. Terry didn’t like it one bit. “Every guy on the club was giving me the razz afterwards about getting me a rocking chair so…
Sawchuk Keeps Wings On Top, Rangers Moving
Rangers New “Bad Men” New York Rangers became the National Hockey league’s most penalized team last week. The New York players had spent a total of 448 min-lead in the box. It’s seldom Rangers lead in this department. Boucher Night Frank Boucher, popular General Manager of the New York Hangers will be honored with a “Frank Boucher Night” nt Madison Square Garden, February 14. Boucher, one of hockey’s all-time greats, is serving his 25th year with the Hanger organization. MONTREAL, Que.— New York Rangers sprung from last place in the standings a week ago to third place. The Broadway Blue Shirts have lost only two games in their last 13 starts. They won three in a row this past week. The Rangers have 33 points apiece. Chicago Black Hawks moved into the cellar with 30 points. Detroit…
Big Jim BedardWins Heart Of Milwaukee From First Day On
MILWAUKEE, Wis.— The citizens of Milwaukee are only seeing their first season of United States Hockey League play, but they’ve already seen enough to agree that big Jim Bedard is one of their favourites. Jim, whose rugged 195-pound frame patrols the back line for the Milwaukee Sea Gulls, is being watched closely by the Chicago Black Hawks who own his contract. The rough, tough rearguard has seen action in four of the NHL squad’s games so far this season and might have been used more had he not been needed back in Milwaukee where injuries were taking their toll. In one of these games, against the New York Rangers, Bedard proved that he’s another Kenny Reardon at checking when he took to the air and smashed Pentti Lund against the boards much…
