Shutout Credit Although the Thin Man, goalie Rollins of the Toronto Maple Leafs, started in the nets at Maple Leaf Grdens alst Saturday, the ‘Fat Man’, Turk Broda, who finished the tilt when Rollins was injured, received credit for the shutout in a scoreless tie with Chicago. The goalie who plays the most minutes in a hockey game, gets the credit for the valuable ‘goose egg.’ Two Birthdays New York Rangers celebrated two birthdays in a row. Finish-born Pentti Lund, and Winnipeg’s Nick Mickoski, celebrated their 25th and 23rd birthday respectively. Lund blew out his candles on December sixth, and Mickoski on December seventh. Wings Give Black Wish Trade Him To Chi Hawks
DETROIT, Mich.— Forward Steve Black, who was farmed out by the Detroit Red Wings, got his wish recently. He asked the Detroit management to trade him after he refused to stay at Indianapolis. So the Wings obliged. Jack Adams and Bill Tobin, managers of the Chicago Black Hawks, put their heads together and when they were parted Black was on his way to the Windy City. He was accompanied by Lee Fogolin, defenseman of the Wings. In return the Hawks sent Rookie Forward Vic Stasiuk to the Wings and another professional from the Hawk’s system to bo named at a later date. The Wings bought Black from the St. Louis Flyers at the beginning of the 1949-50 season. Stasiuk was playing with the Hawks and after a whirlwind start had petered out.…
War Gave Sherman White A Chance To Play Stars
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— When Sheman White makes a pass to one of his wings this season, he’s sure of one thing—it’ll be to Jean Paul. With his wingers named Jean Paul Gladu and Jean Paul La-mirande, White can’t miss if he passes to a Jean Paul. White knows a lot more than that, however, for the clever center the yers acquired this fall from the New York Rangers is one of the smartest hockey players in the American League. Not too fast a skater, White is a fine passer and a good playmaker. He’s a superb forechecker and can keep the opposition hemmed into their own end for minutes at a time as he foils their attempts to get the puck out of there. Born at Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick in the Maritim Provinces…
famous Inn Signs……No. 7
“GOAT and COMPASSES,” a possible corruption of “God en-compasseth us,” may be a reminder that medieval monks were not only brewers, but provided rest and refreshment for weary travellers?—or an invitation to thirsty shoemakers and carpenters, whose trade marks were the goat and compasses. In any event, India Pale Ale brewed originally to stand the long sea voyage to India was demanded by 18th century soldiers on their return. And today, those who demand a “real man’s drink” ask for Labatt’s India Pale—a zestful, sparkling ale brewed in Canada to the original English recipe by John Labatt.—John Labatt Limited. The Swing is DEFINITELY to Labatt’s…
