Coflin Gets Chance As Chi Rearguards Meet Injuries

CHICAGO, Ill.— Hugh Coflin, the amateur defenseman signed several months ago by the Chicago Hawks, never thought that injuries would pave his way into the NHL this season. Until last week he expected to start his pro career with the Hawk’s new USHL farm club, the Milwaukee Seagulls, but suddenly plans were changed. Chicago’s defensive setup, declared the best in the league this year, was crippled when three of the squad’ five regular rearguards were hurt in a pair of tough exhibition games. Last week as the Canadians got set to open the 1950-51 season against the Chicago Black Hawks the club threw a luncheon for…

Little John Mitchell, taking over as manager-coach for the promoted Ebbie Goodfellow, had his mind made up about his defense and two of his three lines as he sent the Flyers to work against the defending champions from Cleveland. There never was any doubt about goal, where Ralph Almas is starting his third season as a Flyer, sound of body after a series of injuries last winter. On defense, Mitchell teamed holdovers Eddie Nicholson and George Milligan to form probably the smallest defense twosome in the league. When Nick and George come off the ice, Vig Grigg and Steve Hrymnak go…
