Ebbie Offers Roy Conacher New Contract

Roy Conacher, who announced his retirement from pro hockey last spring after a decade of stellar play in the NHL, may be back Roy Conacher with the Chicago Black Hawks for another year. At least Coach Ebbie Goodfellow reports that Roy has been sent a contract and invited to training camp. One reason why Conacher, who will be 34 next month, may be coaxed into another season is the fact that, with 197 goals, he’s only a short distance away from the 200 mark which has been equaled or bettered by only 12 players in the entire 32 year history of the National Hockey League. Only two of tnese dozen stars notched their 200th goal while in a Chicago uniform. Doug Bentley ran his goal denting output up to 204 last season,…

Brimsek Offered Contract But Can’t Find A Spot

CHICAGO, Ill. — Frankie Brimsek has been sent a 1949-50 Chicago contract, but the Hawk’s coach, Ebbie Goodfellow admits that he can’t quite see just where the ex-Boston great might fit into things. The Black Hawks are definitely set with Harry Lumley as their regular netminder and their new AHL affiliate, St. Louis, seems ready and willing to have Ralph Almas back for a third term of goaltending. There have been rumors that Brimsek might agree to join Chicago’s new entrant in the United States Hockey League, at Milwaukee, where his pal, Red Hamill is set to begin his managerial career. This would be alright, Goodfellow admits, but “Brimmie’s” salary probably couldn’t be handled by the new team which will be going all out to be a box office success in a town…

THE FAN FORUM

FRONT OFFICE DUNCES Dear Sir, Mr. Sonny Johnstone sure must think the Hawks’ front office is composed of a bunch of dunces. He has Detroit coming out all fine in the recent trade and the Hawks getting only Babando, “who should be helpful to the Hawks.” And since when is Terry Sawchuk a better goaler than Harry Lumley That’s putting a lot of stock in a rookie net-minder who still has to prove that he’s big league stuff. Sure he filled in. brilliantly for Harry last season, but he was “up” for the big chance and his defense was flawless. He’ll really have to be good to equal, or even come close to Lumley’s goals against average. He doesn’t even mention Morrison and Dewsbury — both of which are potential big league stars. And…

Leaves Job As Qolf Pro To Heap Power On Wings

MOOSE JAW, Sask.— Metro Prystai, one of the nicest young fellows in the hockey business today, is happy as a lark about, the big off-season N.H.L. deal that sent him from Chicago Black Hawks to the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. “It isn’t often a fellow gets traded from a bottom-place to a championship team,” grinned the 22-year-old centre star before he departed for the Detroit club’s fall training camp. Even though the transaction took place several weeks ago, Prystai still has trouble making himself believe it’s true. “Even yet I sometimes pinch myself to see if it’s really true or if it’s all a dream,” he confessed. Prystai who came out of the Golden West at 19 to star in hockey’s big time, first heard the news of the nine-player swap when…
