Small Town Hockey Crazy Result: Some Big Doings
(Sports Director, WIBX) UTICA, N.Y.— “TOWN OF 1,500 RAISES $150,000; ERECTS LARGEST HOCKEY ARENA IN EAST” That’s a sample headline you might read at any time in one of Central New York many newspapers. It sounds slightly unbelievable, but it’s exactly what the townspeople of Clinton, N. Y., have done within a period of 12 months. Known for their literal “craze” over hockey, the people of Clinton set out in 1948 to erect an enclosed arena, suitable for hockey games any hour of the day. Now during the season, youngsters and grownups alike are playing the ice sport as early as 7:30 in the morning and as late as 11 at night. Clintonians, as they are called, have been hockey mad for over 20 years, and maybe more if the truth was known. Clinton’s organized…

The new players acquired by the Bisons will report to the Eastern Division champions during, or at the end, of the 1950-51 training camp season. Will Try Juniors Two of the new Bisons will be picked by Chapman from either the Montreal Canadiens juniors, or the senior Montreal Royals, both amateur farm clubs…
Fortune Smiles At Last His Charges Cop Title
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.— “It was worth it to be with the champs!” these few quietly spoken words by Charlie Wilcox, trainer of the Minneapolis Millers of the United States Hockey League, cloaked, one of the greatest stories in the history of a trainer’s life in any sport. The 41-year-old Wilcox, only muscle-treater to remain with the same club since the inauguration of the United States Hockey League in the 1945-46 season, spent more than half the winter’s campaign on the injured list or in the sick bay. He was virtually in a cast for four months and was still wearing one when the Millers wrested the fourth game of their best-of-five series from the Omaha Knights to win the United States League championship three games to one. The North Branch, Minnesota, masseur, who…
They Really Like Baldwin — Mohawk Captain Tops In KG
KANSAS CITY, Mo.— Captaining the just-past season’s team of K. C. puck-sters is a fellow who’ has the qualities necessary for that honored position. The Mohawks have a valuable asset in the person of Doug Baldwin. He plays every game to win, giving no quarter and asking none. As is usual among hockey players from Canada, Doug started playing the ice sport practically as soon as he could toddle. School was merely a necessary interference in his hockey-filled days. Only taking time off for a little energy-giving food, he played on the neighborhood lot, which served as a rink, every minute possible. Fate almost intervened when his parents did not look upon his pursuance of a hockey career with favor. His brother had been having tough luck, being plagued with injuries, and Doug’s…
