Former Pigskin Softball Ace Stirring North Bay Puck Scene

NORTH BAY, Ont.— Large Harry (Suze) Turner, for years a dominant and colorful figure in the Toronto sports world, is all settled down at his home town here. Big Suze, noted for his fastball chucking with such teams as Peoples and Tip Tops of the Beaches Major Fastball League, as well as for his great line play with Toronto Balmy Beach football squads, is, of all things, installed in a hockey job here. To be brief, he’s managing North Bay’s Memorial Gardens. In all probability, Suze is the biggest Risk manager in Canada. It was almost necessary to build a new door to the manager’s office when Turner took over. Harry lost no time bringing about some innovations. For one thing, he brought the goal judges out. Of their little boxes behind…

Fort Frances “Cinderellas” Set Out On Warpath Again

FORT FRANCES, Ont.— The “Cinderella team” is on the inarch again. Northwestern Ontario has pinned its hopes for an Allan Cup on the Fort Frances Canadians and this year that senior hockey club, from the little U. S. border town is actually considered a logical contender for the Dominion title. They came within an ace of hugging the trophy home to their 7,600 fellow-townsmen last spring but even when they stretched the Western Canada finals to the limit before falling before the pro-heavy Regina Capitals at the Queen city, nobody outside their own loyal community really took them seriously. “They’re just a flash in the pan … they’re too light …” ran the talk in hockey circles. This year it’s different. They’re not any bigger, but they’re faster and deadlier around the nets and…

McDonald Probably In As Stamp Coach In ‘50

CALGARY, Alta.— It’s pretty early to start talking about next year, but when the season rolls around don’t be surprised if Byron (Butch) McDonald, former product of Moose Jaw, is piloting the Calgary Stampeders in the Western Canada Senior Hockey League. Butch, who broke his leg while playing with Stampeders early in the year, has done a good job since taking over the reins from Marty Burke. McDonald is getting more co-operation from the players than Burke received. Regina Stays In And for the fans who seem to think Regina Capitals are going to drop out of the loop—it isn’t so. A couple of months ago there was serious talk of Regina tossing in the towel, but as usual a few good hockey boosters got together and guaranteed that a club would represent the…
