Wings Seek Elusive Scoring Title

DETROIT, Mich.— There is only one National Hockey League honor which never has come to rest in Detroit — no member of the Red Wings ever has led the loop in the scoring. A rundown of the list of other awards finds the name of at least one Detroiter along the way. The Wings haven’t exactly grabbed their full share since joining the N.H.L. in 1926, but they’ve hit the top rung a few times. Sid Abel and Ebbie Goodfellow earned the Hart Trophy. Bill Quackenbush and Marty Barry brought home the Lady Byng. Johnny Mowers and Normie Smith copped the Vezina, and Jimmy McFadden added the Calder Cup just two years ago. But Wings have never produced a scoring champion, although three times in the past Detroit players have been runners-up…

Attendance Down Nine Per-Cent, Says Prexy

NEW YORK, N.Y.— Clarence Campbell, president of the National League, said recently, league attendance is down nine per cent from last year. Declaring the drop is not bod as expected, Campbell told the New York Hockey Writers Association: “The dollar has shrunk all over and hockey is essentially a luxury business. Poor Defensemen Should Have Trophy, Says Kenny

(Of The Toronto Daily Telegram) “It’s about time,” says Kenny Reardon, “that defensemen in this league were given some trophy to win.” The announcement isn’t new. Reardon assailed league president Clarence Campbell with the same bit of wisdom last fall and was told if there was some basis on which it could be so awarded there probably would be a trophy for defensemen. “Your goalkeepers,” he says “can win the Vezina. One chance in six. Forwards usually win the Hart Trophy tor the most valuable player because they usually take into consideration the points they score. They figure in that too when they pick the Calder rookie winner. The Ross Trophy goes to the highest scorer and the Lady Byng to the most gentlemanly player which a good defenseman hardly ever is.” “Bill Quackenbush…

K.O-d BY WEATHER

DENVER, Colo.— This city’s application for membership in the ILS.H.L. was temporarily shelved when loop directors took a dim view of Denver's geographical position and deferred the issue until the May meeting. Transportation to Denver from Omaha and Kansas City is available because night trains from cities reach Denver in tlie morning. However, the league is still conscious of the financial losses suffered in transportation costs when Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston failed to make the grade last season. Louisville may be dropped after tills season because of the travel budget. Entry of Milwaukee into the league next season was approved. It had been on the inactive list for two years.…
