BENEFIT NIGHT WITH REAL MEANING
Nights for athletes are fairly common-place wherever major sports are played. Special benefits for former stars down on their luck, or for the widows and families of those who have passed on aren’t unknown either. But the Night held in Montreal last Monday, January 23, had a quality entirely different from any of these—a heart-warming setting that showed there’s still sentiment left in big-time sport. For the thousands of fans who turned out, and the National Hockey League officials and players who took part, were helping to honor the memory of a quiet little fellow who wasn’t even one of their ranks! It was Tag Miller Night when the hockey world paused a few hours to remember a young man who was Coach of last season’s Montreal Junior Royals, Junior champions…
Wings Seek Elusive Scoring Title
DETROIT, Mich.— There is only one National Hockey League honor which never has come to rest in Detroit — no member of the Red Wings ever has led the loop in the scoring. A rundown of the list of other awards finds the name of at least one Detroiter along the way. The Wings haven’t exactly grabbed their full share since joining the N.H.L. in 1926, but they’ve hit the top rung a few times. Sid Abel and Ebbie Goodfellow earned the Hart Trophy. Bill Quackenbush and Marty Barry brought home the Lady Byng. Johnny Mowers and Normie Smith copped the Vezina, and Jimmy McFadden added the Calder Cup just two years ago. But Wings have never produced a scoring champion, although three times in the past Detroit players have been runners-up…

At the end of the season this goaler…
Larries Hard Hit
CANTON, N.Y.— St. Lawrence University faces the most strenuous hockey schedule in its history without the services of Mike Nardello, high scoring center, who has been declared ineligible by the Eastern College Athletic Conference, of which St. Lawrence is a member. Nardello, a senior from Astoria and first line center for the Larries for the past three seasons, was a member of the New York Rovers of the Eastern Amateur Hockey League in 1940 and 1941. The Rovers and the Eastern Amateur League do not have the sanction of the A.A.U. nor the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The decision of the E.C.A.C., headed by Asa T. Bushnell, to bar Nardello from further intercollegiate hockey, was announced by Ronald T Burkman, St. Lawrence director of athletics. St. Lawrence became a member of the E.C.A.C.…
