Hank and Ray Tops Again
ST. PAUL, Minn.— Two players you can always count on seeing up around the top of the United States League scoring race are Ray Powell and his coach Hank Blade, of the Kansas City Mo-howks. Last season Powell finished up on top of the league and this season he’s riding in fourth place or in a three way tie for second place. Ray, who has been on the sidelines with a broken nose is 11 points back of George Agar in the scoring race. He has scored 15 goals and helped on 25 more and all in 28 games. Blade now has 36 points, three behind his teammate Powell. He is tied with young Wally Hergesheimer for fourth place having scored 16 goals and assisted on 20 others. Blade, who took over the coaching…
Day Was Once Hockey’s Top Cagster
TORONTO, Ont’— Twenty-five years is a long time to spend in the National Hockey League but Clarence Henry (Happy) Day, coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, can look back over that span of years and, if he cares to, re-live some pleasant memories. The 48-year-old Toronto coach has run the gamut of hockey experiences, having served 14 years as a player, two years as a referee and nine years as bench boss of the Maple Leafs. Oddly, as a player, he played on only one Stanley Cup winner, the Leafs of the 1931-32 season; as a coach, he has produced five championship teams in nine years, including the only triple winner in N.H.L. history. But, so much for the vital statistics. We’d like to tell you about the lighter side of this man…
Chicoutimi Puck Revival Recalls Past
CHICOUTIMI, Que.— After many a long year on the sidelines, the hockey-mad fans of Chicoutimi once more are basking in the light of reflected glory from their heroes of the ice lanes—recalling to mind the grand old days of yore when this Northern Quebec centei’ was a power in hockey circles. Just the name of the city recalls to old timers the famous feats of the immortal Georges Vezina — the Chicoutimi Cucumber—Johnny Gagnon, the Chicoutimi Black Cat, and many others of that fighting breed who came from the backwoods to storm the heights in organized hockey. Chicoutimi is back in the game again, with its new entry in the powerful Quebec Senior Hockey League more than holding its own with the old established entries. The last time we looked, they were…
THE FAN FORUM
IS IT LEGAL? Dear Sir, Could you please tell me If under any conditions it is legal for an opposing player to enter the goal crease while the puck is in play? Jack Frederick Altadena, Calif. (A player may skate through the goal crease during action around the goal-mouth but if said player is in the crease when a goal is scored it does not count and if a player interferes with a goalkeeper at any time he is given an automatic minor penalty.) RAYNER BOOSTER Dear Sir, During a recent Ranger game I had an argument with a friend over who would be the best goalie in the N.H.L. without a defense. I maintained that Chuck Rayner would be best. My reasons were that hardly a game goes by that Rayner doesn’t make 25-30 saves. On an average…
