Bears’ Phil Maloney Hot A.H.L. Favorite For Rookie Award
HERSHEY. Pa.— We were all sitting around in Sam Levy’s AllSports Eighth Avenue emporium one night after the Rangers had a particularly good night and had out the Leafs, when somebody said, “What’s with this kid Phil Maloney we’re hearing so much about?” So there’s nothing for me to do but to pipe up with, “Well, WHAT’s with this kid Maloney? He’s great stuff., He’s bound to get the rookie of the year for the AHL, that’s what’s with him!” Actually Maloney is pretty much the mystery man to many of his staunchest supporters. He’s a quiet kid, just turned old enough to vote, dark and handsome. WILL VIDEO HURT HOCKEY?
MONTREAL, Que.— Television lost another round in its battle with sporting interests this week when President Clarence Campbell of the National Hockey League came out flatly with the charge that the new entertainment medium was a definite threat to the winter sport. The N.H.L. chief asserted that television would adversely affect attendance by keeping present and prospective fans at home, and would further harm the game by presenting the less attractive features while missing out on the speed and skill which make the sport such a thrilling spectacle for rink-goers. “Fights, injuries, boarding and other rough tactics are the easiest to catch on television,” President Campbell told THE HOCKEY NEWS in an interview. “On the other hand, the fast end-to-end rushes, the skilful, attractive features of the game are most difficult to portray…
Odds Favor Rookie-Loaded Dallas Texans
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.— When the coaches of the United States-Hockey League teams start casting their ballots for the “outstanding rookie” of the 1948-49 season they will be faced with a very difficult task because this season’s crop has been the best since the League was organized in 1945. Last season a goaltender, Terry Sawchuk of the Omaha Knights was an easy victor, and they say that Terry has an excellent chance of repeating in the American League this season where he is starring for the Indianapolis Caps. Once more a goaltender is one of the leading candidates for the USHL “outstanding rookie” honor and the $250. cash award which goes with it. This time it is Kansas City’s stellar net-guardian, Al Rollins. Last season Rollins was goalie for Canada’s senior champions, the Edmonton…

PLAYS CENTER Dear Sir, Could you please tell what Junior team Arthur Rose is playing for, and what position does he play. Does he belong to any professional club? Harvey Astles Verdun, Que. (Rose is playing with Fort William Columbus Canadiens, plays center or right wing, and belongs to Canadiens. He tried out with the junior Habs this season, but went back home claiming to coach Sammy Pollock that he was lone-come’). JUST A MOLE Dear Sir, In a recent Issue you published a picture on the American Hockey League page, and you claimed that one of the players was Chick Webster of New Haven. I disagree. The player is Sherman White and I know him because of a mole over his left eye, which shows plainly in the picture. Harry Tower Moncton, N.B. (We’ll take your word for it,…
