Eddie Sandford Headed For Stardom
MONTREAL, Que.— “I’ve been watching the kid ever since he started playing hockey and he can’t miss being a great star,” was the terse reply given by Charlie Conacher, coach of Chicago Black Hawks, when asked what he thought of the present N.H.L. scoring wizard, Ed Sandford of Boston. Charlie is not alone in his opinion, as the 20-year-old Bruins center, has been earmaked for stardom ever since he began playing organized hockey as a bantam at 13. Boston Bruins made a brilliant coup when they signed Sandford to a professional contract last season. Every team in professional hockey was chasing him, and it nearly broke Conn Smythe’s heart when the Torontonian inked a contract with the Art Ross club. Bruins’ Chief Scout Harold “Baldy” Cotton really deserves the accolades for the…
THE FAN FORUM
VOICE OP THE WEST Dear Sir, Am I your only Los Angeles subscriber or are the usually mad Angelenos shy on letter writing? Judging from the Columns of the Fan Forum, which shows no life from this area, I am just that. Could be that your terrific little paper has not reached the “wild west”. Something should be done about this. I have a suggestion also. Instead of using the Fan Forum as a catch-all, why not just confine it to opinions and requests? All these bet settlements and record-book ramshacklings don’t fit somehow. I like to read about nry favorite teams, of course but I don’t expect you to devote your whole paper to the Monarchs — why must every letter to the Forum ask for more news about the “Mucktown Monsters”…
Hershey’s Andy Branigan Real Robust Defenseman
HERSHEY, Pa. — Rough and ready Andy Branigan, robust defenseman of the Hershey Bears, rated a cartoon in the Providence Evening Bulletin of November 1 last, following the 3-2 victory of the team over Terry Reardon’s Reds The cartoon by Frank Lanning showed the square-jawed defenseman in front of Gordie Henry in the net and on top of the net a symbolical figure of a bear. Branigan was shown lying on the ice, in front of him were eight pucks, and he was stopping another rubber with his left hand. At his legs was the Rhode Island Red rooster holding a hockey stick high in the air, saying, “Git up oand fig ht like a man.” Lanning headed his cartoon “Crack Safety Man” and in the left corner was printed, “Handy Andy Branigan,…
Ontario Hockey Data
Stratford Indians are the “bouncing babi es of the Ontario Hockey Association’s Senior “A” series. After absorbing a 7-0 defeat in Hamilton on Nov. 6, they came right back before the home fans two days later with a 7-2 win over Owen Sound. From last place, after the Hamilton defeat, to third place after the Owen Sound victory is some bounce. But that’s the way the five team Senior “A” group has been going this season. Take Toronto Marl-boros, they dropped their first three games, then played two overtime tie games against Owen Sound after which they scored shutout wins over Stratford and Kitchener at the Maple Leafs Gardens and a 2-1 win over Kitchener at the Waterloo Arena. Eight points out of a possible ten in their last five…
