Rookie Makes Disputed Deal Pay Off

MONTREAL, Que.— At exactly three minutes and one second of the first period of the opening game of the Montreal Canadiens 1948-’49 season, the trade which sent Buddy O’Connor and Frankie Eddolls to the New York Rangers in exchange for Hal Laycoe, Joe Bell and an unamed amateur began to pay off for the Flying French men. At that three minute mark, George Robertson, the unnamed amateur in the deal took a pass from Elmer Lach and dribbled the puck between Chuck Rayner’s pads to become the first Canadien to break into the scoring list in the curent season. In his five games the 21-year-old Robertson scored twice and assisted on three other goals—quite a start for a rookie. Port Arthur Bruins Hit Hard By Pro Puck Raids

PORT ARTHUR, Ont. — In the comparatively short space oi six months, Port Arthur West End Bruins have been transformed from the best junior hockey club in Canada to a stripling team that is long on fight but short on experience. The price of winning a Memorial Cup has been a heavy one for the Bruins. The team that last Spring trounced Barrie Flyers, pride of the East, in four straight names to win Port Arthur its first national junior title, the Bruins today can count only four survivors from that great 1947-48 team. Graduations have cut deepest into the championship ranks, and stripping the club still more was the jump to professional ranks of two junior-aged stars.
