Wings, Leafs, Seeking Title Lost By Habs
MONTREAL, Que.— A new National Hockey League champion will be crowned on March 21 when the regular 180-game championship schedule comes to a close. Succeeding Montreal Canadiens, N.H.L. titleholders for the last four years, will be either Detroit Red Wings or Toronto Maple Leafs. The battle for first place this season between these two teams has been one of the closest in the 31-year-old history of the league. Ever since the middle of December it has been strictly a two team race for top honors, with the lead seesawing back and forth from week to week between Detroit and Toronto. PHIL WATSON’S “FRIGHT-MIKE”
Phil Watson, colorful New York Ranger forward, is noted for his difficulty in speaking coherent English when he becomes excited. His English often takes on a French twist at such times. There was a time when angered that he turned to an aging veteran and screamed “You been-has”. And again, when he was the victim of a high-stick, he yelled at the offending player, “Next time you do this I chase you up two trees”.
