Smokies, Leafs Fighting For Second
TRAIL, B.C.— With the Kimberley Dynamiters, the defending champions, so far in front that they’re nearly out of sight, Mr. Joe Fan of the Western International League has focussed his interest on the scoring race and the battle for the second slot. Ralph Redding’s Kimberley clan has been winning eight out of every 10 while outclassing, the other clubs in the first half of the schedule. Strangely enough, the cellar-dwelling Nelson Maple Leafs are the only pucksters who have downed the Dynamiters twice. Spokane and Trail have both accomplished the feat once. Battle Rages Meanwhile the battle for second place still rages between Spokane Spartans and Trail Smoke Eaters. Both clubs have been playing hot and cold and have been in and out of second place. One outfit will take over the runner-up rung,…
FOOTLOOSE WITH FITKIN
TORONTO—There’s an art to tossing fists when your’e on skates We were homeward bound from Chicago recently with the Maple Leafs and Gus Mortson, fleet-skating young rearguard of the Mapleos, was taking quite a ribbing from his mates. Gus had been in a scrap with ex-chum Bob Goldham and had been tagged vigorously on the jaw. “That was quite a punch Goldham hit you,” veteran Nick Metz remarked when Mortson, armed with a thermos of tea and some sandwiches, wandered into the smoker of the special hockey car. Mortson shook his head. “Didn’t even feel it,” he said. “He hit me when I was off balance.” “Huh,” Nick snorted, “if you didn’t feel that one, you ought to be in there fightin’ Louis instead of Walcott.” “Maybe,” Gus said. “But it didn’t…

Hornets Regain First Position As Bisons Slip
PITTSBURGH— The Pittsburgh Hornets regained their lead in the Western Division of the A.H.L. by defeating the Indianapolis Capitols 4-1, and by gaining a 1-1 draw with their rivals from Buffalo in their two games last weekend. The Bisons weren't quite as fortunate as they bowed to the lowly Cleveland Barons 7-4 before the draw game with the Hornets. In the game with the Wasps, the Bisons were but two minutes away from victory when Defence-man Pete Backor fired a long shot that fooled Connie Dion in the Bisons cage. The Helnets have played 40 games winning 24 and losing nine with seven ties for a 55-point total while the Bisons have played one game more. Their total stands at 25 wins, 13 loses and three ties. REDS ON TOP The Providence Reds are…
