Round the Rinks

Three enthusiastic readers of THE HOCKEY NEWS from the Boston area became so eager to find the answers to Bill Liston’s Hockey Quiz that appeared in last week’s issue that they journeyed up to Montreal to find out the correct answers. Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but the three Boston Bruins rooters—Francis “Red” Fleming, Charlie Small and Johnny Splaine—made a trip up to Montreal this past week and one of the first places they visited in the Canadian metropolis was the office of THE HOCKEY NEWS. Fleming, Small and Splaine hail from Milton, Mass. Small and Splaine were business manager and treasurer respectively of last season’s Milton Hockey Club which played in the now-defunct Massachusetts State League. “Red” Fleming was president of the Massachusetts loop. Olympic Pilot Thinks Flyers Will Fare Well

NEW YORK— Despite the luke-warm hopes of Canada’s hockey officials, the members of Canada’s Olympic hockey-team sailed from New York last Friday with high hopes of registering a string of ice victories on foreign rinks. Frank Boucher stated, “We have a good team and should have no trouble with the Europeans.” Boucher, who is a nephew of Frank Boucher of the New York Rangers of the N.H.L., was a former centre for Canadian service teams in France and Switzerland in 1945-46. U.S. Team Tough The 29-year-old Canadian coach added, “The United States team will be the one to beat.” Boucher also played professional hockey in the American League with Philadelphia and Providence. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1940. The 20-man Canadian team sailed for Europe including…

Here and There

It took Coach Frank Boucher a long time to finally decide the date of his two goaling wizards—Charley “The Prince” Rayner and Sugar Jim Henry. The hockey world was rather stunned, to say the least, when the “Prince of the Cordage” was told to report to New Haven. It’s a funny thing how a player can be a hero one day and be out of a job the next. That’s the game, and if it hadn’t been for an unfortunate injury, Chuck would undoubtedly be still holding his New York meal-ticket. The move still puts the likable Jim Henry on t h e spot-for as soon as he shows signs of slipping, the New York fans will rock the Garden with shouts for Rayner. Not that Henry isn’t a favorite…
