Redden battles pain

Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden missed Game 2 against Tampa Bay after his mother, Pat, lost a lengthy battle with cancer. Redden returned for Game 3 – an 8-4 Ottawa victory – and played hero with a three-point night. “When you just think about hockey and get out there, it’s a lot easier to focus on the game,” he said. Redden planned to return home to Lloydminster, Sask,. after Game 4 for the funeral April 28. Dirk doomed by losses

After struggling for years as Phoenix’s farm team, Springfield had high hopes for its new deal with Tampa Bay. Instead, the first two years have failed to produce a playoff appearance, ultimately costing coach Dirk Graham and assistant Phil Russell their jobs. Graham was relieved of his duties April 17, though he was offered another job in the organization by Lightning GM Jay Feaster for the final year of his contract. U.S. TV issues still not settled

A new agreement between OLN and Dish TV will bring some relief to U.S. hockey fans frustrated by the NHL’s topsy-turvy cable deal, but there’s still no guarantee viewers will be able to watch their local team in the playoffs when the games matter most. The problem lies with the broadcast licensing agreements between the NHL, its national carrier OLN – soon to be rechristened as Versus in the U.S. – and regional broadcasters such as Fox Sportsnet. Regional broadcasters have first crack at local games, meaning if OLN is carrying that game nationally, it will be blacked out in that area. “It’s a standard agreement,” said OLN spokesperson Amy Phillips. “Regional sports networks are protected.” But what if the regional broadcaster doesn’t show the game?
