<div class="byline">WITH BRIAN COSTELLO</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/bc_2020_cmy_252/825388-1-eng-US/bc_2020_cmy_2522.jpg" title="bc_2020_cmy_252" width="690" height="997"></div><p class="dropcap"><b><span>J</span>OHNNY GAUDREAU AND MATTHEW</b> Tkachuk showed amazing chemistry together in their first full season as linemates with the Calgary Flames. They both blew through career highs in goals, assists and points and had fantasy-league managers scrambling to make them keepers for 2022-23. Then this summer &ndash; this most unusual summer &ndash; the two former Flames went in separate directions in more ways than one.</p><p>Gaudreau kept the hockey world in suspense in the days leading up to his UFA status. Calgary fans thought he might re-sign with the team &ndash; he said he loved his time there, the Flames are among the NHL&rsquo;s most competitive teams and the contract offer would be as good as it gets for a player who finished fourth in Hart Trophy voting. Others figured for years that Gaudreau would sign with either the Philadelphia Flyers or New Jersey Devils, teams closer to his boyhood backyard.</p><p>Instead, Gaudreau went off the grid and selected the perpetually rebuilding Columbus Blue Jackets. It was a stunner. It was a decision that shocked us all, including everyone associated with the Blue Jackets. They didn&rsquo;t think they were even on the radar.</p><p>Tkachuk, on the other hand, was an RFA, still one year away from the true freedom that Gaudreau enjoyed as a UFA. Tkachuk didn&rsquo;t have as much leverage in determining his new home. But rather than being coy about his feelings, he laid everything on the table in a conversation with Flames GM Brad Treliving. He told the team he had no intention of ever signing a long-term deal with Calgary.</p><p>It was a proclamation that stung Flames fans every bit as much as Gaudreau&rsquo;s decision not to stay just one week earlier. But there was a method to Tkachuk&rsquo;s thought process. By letting the Flames know he wanted out, and giving them a list of desired destinations and a fairly open timeline, he allowed his former team to get a return on his ticket out of town. It was essentially a move than won him additional admiration in Calgary. Yes, we&rsquo;re breaking up, he acknowledged in so many words, but these are the straight goods, and I want you to be better coming out the other side.</p><p>By now, of course, you know Calgary swung a blockbuster deal with the Florida Panthers that resulted in two stars (Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar) and two other assets coming over for Tkachuk. It was a spectacular return of capital that makes even fantasy-league managers envious.</p><p>Sure, it is hyperbole to say Tkachuk was being noble in his final communication with the Flames. Let&rsquo;s face it, he was looking out for himself and his desire to spend the rest of his prime in his location of choice. But he could&rsquo;ve kept quiet and gone wherever he wanted in 12 months anyway. What he did in this fashion was look out for the NHL team that gave him a start and the first six seasons of his career.</p><p>Gaudreau&rsquo;s departure &ndash; even though it was well within his rights as a UFA &ndash; caused a maelstrom of heartache and consternation around Calgary. It boils down to Gaudreau not doing a very good job of setting expectations. To his credit, he displayed grace days later when he penned an open letter to Calgary fans.</p><p>Two completely different departures, two weeks apart. To our subscribers, thanks for your support.</p><p>Our Fantasy Guide is a celebration of the new season, but this year, it&rsquo;s even more special at The Hockey News because we have had much more to celebrate. Not only has our audience grown, but we have launched a new partnership with BetMGM, added more written content at <a href="http://THN.com">THN.com</a> and added more podcasts.</p><p>When I acquired The Hockey News midway through its 71st year of existence, I gave myself until the 75th anniversary to make what I believed to be the necessary changes for it to get to its 100th anniversary in 2047 &ndash; and beyond.</p><p>Subscribers and readers have noticed the many changes that have been made to the physical nature of the magazine as well as the expansion of the scope of hockey-related editorial content that we have delivered over these past four-and-a-half years. But we are not done with the improvements.</p><p>The Hockey News is now looking forward toward the future and its next milestone of the 100th anniversary in 2047. It will have been an entire century since the NHL&rsquo;s Ken McKenzie got the green light from Clarence Campbell to launch The Hockey News when that day comes.</p><p>Ryan Kennedy has been with The Hockey News since 2005 in several capacities leading up to his most recent role as senior writer. A NEW EDITOR IN CHIEF

It&rsquo;s what you do next that will make all the difference. (NICK TURCHIARO-USA TODAY SPORTS)</p><p></p></figcaption></div><p><b>ONCE YOUR DRAFT IS</b> finished, your work in many fantasy leagues is just beginning.</p><p>You can&rsquo;t just sit back and let Connor McDavid or Andrei Vasilevskiy do everything, unless you somehow managed to get both of them in your draft.</p><p>It&rsquo;s the lesser players you have to analyze and judge and change on the fly. It is the players who aren&rsquo;t your top picks &ndash; or weren&rsquo;t even drafted at all &ndash; who will make or break your chances of winning.</p><p>Here&rsquo;s a list of some of the things you should keep in mind during the season. Some may seem obvious, but if you&rsquo;re not prepared, you&rsquo;re losing out.</p><h2><b>&gt; GOALIES</b></h2><p>It&rsquo;s more important than ever to get a busy goalie early in your draft. Only so many goalies are playing 55-plus games now, and you want one of them. There are going to be leagues in which Vasilevskiy goes first overall, and Igor Shesterkin and Jacob Markstrom are going to be right behind him.</p><p>Plus, there are so many injuries to goalies nowadays, and COVID-19 is still around, or some variant of a variant. You&rsquo;ve got to keep your eye on replacements. Who&rsquo;s playing well in the AHL? Who&rsquo;s the next man up? Don&rsquo;t be afraid to go with that player, even over the short term. There are so many good goalies waiting in the wings, and when they get the call, they won&rsquo;t take it lightly.</p><h2><b>&gt; WAIVERS</b></h2><p>Players run hot and cold all the time, and of course sometimes that happens at the start of the year. Kyle Connor, for example, had 10 goals in 13 games in the first month of last season. In 2019-20, he had four goals in his first 14 games, but he still finished with 38.</p><p>You should watch your league&rsquo;s waiver wire all the time, but most importantly early in the season. That&rsquo;s when your fellow competitors are most active and most reactionary. It&rsquo;s also when they make the most mistakes.</p><h2><b>&gt; BREAKOUT</b>&nbsp;<b>PLAYERS</b></h2><p>This is something you should try to figure out before the season starts, but it&rsquo;s never easy. Sometimes players break out during the season. Dylan Strome didn&rsquo;t exactly have a breakout last year, but maybe more of a comeback. After slogging around for the past couple of seasons, he caught fire in Chicago&rsquo;s second half with 18 goals and 36 points in 41 games, leading the team in goals in that stretch. Centering Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane helped, of course, but the point is to pay closer attention to highly regarded players who have been struggling or have yet to break out. Tage Thompson and Troy Terry were good examples last year. You didn&rsquo;t predict it prior to the season, but you&rsquo;ve got to be ready.</p><h2><b>&gt; INJURY COMEBACKS</b></h2><p>There seems to be something magical in returning from long-term injuries. Players are supposed to need time to get back into game shape, and they probably do. But maybe the game slows down for them a bit, and it&rsquo;s like they&rsquo;re trying to make up for lost time as much as possible. They&rsquo;re fresh, and they&rsquo;ve been watching the games, champing at the bit to get back into action.</p><p>Jack Hughes hadn&rsquo;t been anything special at the NHL level prior to last year, and then he missed most of the first two months. Once back, though, he started to roll right away, and averaged more than a point a game &ndash; 56 points in 49 games &ndash; until he got hurt again. After Nick Schmaltz missed all of November and most of December, he scored 21 goals and 48 points in 42 games. And Nikita Kucherov has become legendary for leading Tampa Bay to the 2021 Stanley Cup after missing the entire regular season.</p><h2><b>&gt; ROOKIE WALL</b></h2><p>Every year there are rookies who can be sent back to junior before they play 10 games. Sometimes, a Seth Jarvis rolls around and surprises everybody, but unless they&rsquo;re one of the top few picks, they&rsquo;re usually going back if they have junior eligibility. The NHL team just wants to get a look and only keep them if they&rsquo;re an integral part of the lineup.</p><p>Don&rsquo;t worry about the rookie wall. None of the top rookies hit a wall last year, except perhaps Cole Caufield, but in his case, he couldn&rsquo;t even find the wall for a while. Every time a rookie goes into any kind of slump, he&rsquo;s supposedly hit that proverbial wall. Note that veterans do the same thing, but there&rsquo;s no &ldquo;veteran wall.&rdquo;</p><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/poolies_con_201/825516-1-eng-US/poolies_con_2012.jpg" title="poolies_con_201" width="1022" height="769"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>KYLE CONNOR</b><br>(STEPHEN BRASHEAR-USA TODAY SPORTS)</p></figcaption></div><h2><b>&gt; ACTION AND REACTION</b></h2><p>Every action has a reaction. A first-line winger gets injured, somebody has to replace him. A struggling power play needs a change, someone moves in and someone else moves out. A third-line center catches fire and moves up to the second line, somebody else gets bumped down. A goalie injury means another goalie opportunity. Trade away a bunch of guys, a bunch of other players get new life.</p><h2><b>&gt; HOT STUFF</b></h2><p>As we&rsquo;ve noted, players run hot and cold. It&rsquo;s important to keep an eye on struggling players as much as hot ones. If a lesser player hits an unexpected hot streak, don&rsquo;t believe it, same as if a good player goes cold. As always, if you&rsquo;re in a league that allows trades, remember to buy low and sell high. The exception, as noted above, is when a player is potentially breaking out.</p><h2><b>&gt; BREAK IN THE ACTION</b></h2><p>Some time away can be just what the doctor ordered for a slumping player. The December holiday break is good for this. A player is sitting there with his family, spraying whipped cream directly into his mouth, and thinking about what&rsquo;s going wrong.</p><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/poolies_cau_202/825509-1-eng-US/poolies_cau_2022.jpg" title="poolies_cau_202" width="1021" height="1372"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>EVERYBODY SLUMPS</b></p><p>Caufield&rsquo;s slow start last season was blamed on the &ldquo;rookie wall.&rdquo; But vets have unproductive stretches, too. (DAVID KIROUAC-USA TODAY SPORTS)</p></figcaption></div><p>OK, maybe it doesn&rsquo;t happen exactly like that, but give a player enough time off and he might just figure things out. <i>&ldquo;Maybe I need to work a little harder, maybe I need to go to the net more, maybe I should shoot the puck more often, maybe I should put down this can of whipped cream&hellip;&rdquo;</i></p><h2><b>&gt; NEW COACH</b></h2><p>Everybody wants to impress the new guy, especially the ones who think they should be playing more.</p><h2><b>&gt; TRADES</b></h2><p>You usually want to snap guys up after they&rsquo;ve been traded. They&rsquo;ve got something to prove to both teams, and the team acquiring the player gets him for a reason and puts him in a position to succeed.</p><h2><b>&gt; FREE AGENTS</b></h2><p>UFAs are usually motivated to begin with, but also look for veterans who could go to a contending team, and start loading up on the obvious ones before the trade deadline. Last season, for example, Claude Giroux was playing out the string in Philadelphia. The Flyers, of course, had an opportunity to get something instead of nothing, so he was dealt. When Giroux got to Florida, he had a new lease on life and put up 23 points in the final 18 games.</p><h2><b>&gt; LATE-SEASON ADDS</b></h2><p>This is mostly after the NCAA season ends &ndash; or even the European season. Undrafted college free agents are pursued every year. Usually, it turns out, they were overlooked for a reason, so don&rsquo;t get too excited. European additions can be hit or miss as well. Last year, goalie Harri Sateri was a miss after he went through waivers and was picked up by Arizona after Toronto had signed him.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

(CANDICE WARD-USA TODAY SPORTS)</p><p></p></figcaption></div><p class="dropcap"><b><span>W</span>HEN OPPORTUNITY</b> knocks, you better answer if you&rsquo;re an NHL rookie. Perhaps not surprisingly, the majority of the top projected freshmen for the 2022-23 campaign will be playing for rebuilding teams, which means they won&rsquo;t have as many depth-chart barriers in front of them.</p><p>This is particularly true in Seattle, where the Kraken have taken centers early in the past two drafts: Matty Beniers second overall in 2021 and Shane Wright fourth overall in 2022. After having had little down the middle last year, Seattle would love for the kids to come in and make an instant impact this season. As it is, Beniers had an impressive nine points in 10 games at the end of last season when he made his NHL debut after his NCAA campaign ended.</p><p>Overall, the next Calder Trophy race could have a very Maize and Blue tinge to it, as Beniers will be joined by a couple of his former University of Michigan teammates in Columbus left winger Kent Johnson and Buffalo defenseman Owen Power. Though the Wolverines fell short in the 2022 Frozen Four semifinal, the team was loaded with high-end talent and plenty of scoring punch. Power, who went first overall in the 2021 NHL draft, is our top-rated rookie defenseman in this year&rsquo;s Poolbook.</p><p>But the major-junior ranks will also have something to say about the rookie race, with Anaheim&rsquo;s Mason McTavish and Dallas&rsquo; Wyatt Johnston leading the charge. McTavish helped OHL Hamilton go all the way to the Memorial Cup final, while Johnston&rsquo;s Windsor Spitfires reached the OHL final &ndash; before falling to McTavish&rsquo;s Bulldogs.</p><p>And let&rsquo;s not forget how much experience can help in the Calder competition. Winnipeg&rsquo;s Cole Perfetti played 18 games for the Jets last season and was also nearly a point-per-gamer in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose. With an offense that sat middle of the pack last year, Winnipeg could use a boost from Perfetti in his first year of full-time NHL duty.</p><p>Here are the top 10 freshman for 2022-23, based on THN fantasy expert Murray Townsend&rsquo;s points projections.</p><h2><b>MATTY BENIERS</b></h2><p><b>C, SEATTLE &ndash; PROJECTION: 61 PTS</b></p><p>His excellent showing at the end of last season will hopefully be a harbinger for the Kraken. Beniers has the speed, skill and motor to drive a scoring line.</p><h2><b>JURAJ SLAFKOVSKY</b></h2><p><b>LW, MONTREAL &ndash; PROJECTION: 54 PTS</b></p><p>He dazzled at the Olympics and the World Championship, so clearly the big stage is his scene. He&rsquo;s got the size and shot to produce right away in the NHL.</p><h2><b>SHANE WRIGHT</b></h2><p><b>C, SEATTLE &ndash; PROJECTION: 44 PTS</b>&gt;</p><p>It was a shocker when he dropped to fourth in the draft, but the Kraken aren&rsquo;t complaining. Wright&rsquo;s intelligence and two-way play will help him quickly adapt to the NHL.</p><h2><b>MASON MCTAVISH</b></h2><p><b>C, ANAHEIM &ndash; PROJECTION: 41 PTS</b></p><p>The Ducks have always liked big centers, and McTavish is a strong, physical kid who also happens to possess a ton of skill. His time with OHL Hamilton (30 goals in 43 total games) is evidence.</p><h2><b>COLE PERFETTI</b></h2><p><b>LW, WINNIPEG &ndash; PROJECTION: 41 PTS</b></p><p>Smart, skilled youngster has gotten a lot stronger since the Jets drafted him in 2020, and the chance to play in the AHL early was a bonus for his development.</p><h2><b>KENT JOHNSON</b></h2><p><b>LW, COLUMBUS &ndash; PROJECTION: 40 PTS</b></p><p>Keeping weight on has been a challenge, but his hands and offensive toolbox are unreal. With the Blue Jackets needing more skill, Johnson was a crucial pick.</p><h2><b>DYLAN GUENTHER</b></h2><p><b>RW, ARIZONA &ndash; PROJECTION: 38 PTS</b></p><p>His goal-scoring prowess and hockey IQ are calling cards, and the Coyotes could certainly use some more high-end talent in the lineup. Had a great WHL playoff run, too.</p><h2><b>WYATT JOHNSTON</b></h2><p><b>C, DALLAS &ndash; PROJECTION: 38 PTS</b></p><p>The OHL&rsquo;s most outstanding player of the year was a revelation for Windsor. The Stars are getting a strong skater with great vision and a wicked shot release.</p><h2><b>LUKAS REICHEL</b></h2><p><b>LW, CHICAGO &ndash; PROJECTION: 37 PTS</b></p><p>The German national now has a much easier path to the NHL with Chicago&rsquo;s rebuild, and his playmaking skills up front will help. He was a point-per-gamer in the AHL.</p><h2><b>OWEN POWER</b></h2><p><b>D, BUFFALO &ndash; PROJECTION: 37 PTS</b></p><p>The highest-ranked rookie blueliner has size, skating and puck skills.
