Olympic Preview 2022
No NHLers? No problem. The 2022 Olympics are packed with intriguing storylines, and we've got you covered with previews of both the women's and men's tournaments. In addition, this issue is packed with star power with features on Alex Ovechkin, Auston Matthews, Cale Makar, Sahsa Barkov and much, much more.

SOME SURPRISE FIREPOWER
IN PAST BEST-ON-BEST tournaments, the Swiss have relied on staunch defense and timely goaltending to give fits to stronger opponents. But heading into Beijing, Switzerland actually has some firepower – though team chemistry will once again be a driver since many of the players know each other from international play over the years. One of the hottest forwards in the Swiss League this season is Denis Malgin, the former NHLer starring for Zurich, where he was the highest-scoring Swiss player in the league. Other veterans such as Killian Mottet and Luca Fazzini have been racking up points, while a host of familiar names will buttress the attack: Sven Andrighetto, Christoph Bertschy and Tristan Scherwey have all donned the national jersey plenty of times in their careers. Much the same can be said…

OPERATION CROSS-CHECK CROSSOUT
THE CALL WAS EASY by any standard in any era. Ottawa Senators prospect left winger Ridly Greig, competing in pre-season action against the Winnipeg Jets, was a deer in the middle of the road with the mighty Pierre-Luc Dubois speeding toward him. Greig instinctively raised his stick and caught Dubois with a meaty cross-check to the mouth. The dirty blow earned Greig a five-minute major and game misconduct. The NHL’s department of player safety also handed Greig a two-game ban for cross-checking. It was the first cross-checking suspension doled out in the 2021-22 NHL calendar. Through early January 2022, it was the only one, but that stat was misleading. Offenders weren’t evading the law. The NHL’s player population was scared straight. The league had promised a crackdown on cross-checking in 2021-22,…

SARAH FILLIER
IT WAS THE GOAL that announced Sarah Fillier’s arrival as one of the next great Canadian national-team players. In Canada’s second game at the World Championship in August, during a run of 4-on-4 play, Fillier picked off an errant Russian pass and turned the corner to lead the rush as Canada broke out of its zone 3-on-1. With two passing options and her body open to the goal, Fillier exuded the patience of a veteran and kept her eyes on her teammates before ripping a net-seeking wrist shot low and past the Russian keeper to put Canada on the board. It wasn’t the first time she had found twine at the national-team level, mind you. She had scored previously at the Four Nations Cup in 2018, her first tournament with the senior…

THE GAMES WITHOUT NHLERS
HERE’S A SUGGESTION for the organizers of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games: change the official motto from “Together For A Shared Future” to “Be Positive, Test Negative.” Beijing 2022 may end up being remembered, at least in hockey circles, as the Variant Games, simply for how the stubborn and highly transmissible Omicron variant tore through the world in the lead-up to the showcase event. In the two-plus years since COVID-19 became a household word, the world has learned to adapt and adjust accordingly, and that included a change in course for NHL stars showcasing their talents in the Chinese capital. The NHL withdrew from the Feb. 4-20 Games in late December to save a schedule ravaged by virus outbreaks on numerous teams. Once Omicron got a grip on NHL clubs, the…
