Comley continues to enjoy time behind MSU bench
After legendary Michigan State coach Ron Mason retired at the end of 2001-02 to become the Spartans director of athletics, the first thing he did was hire another legend to replace him. Mason, the winningest coach in college hockey history with 924 victories in 36 seasons, tabbed Rick Comley, himself fifth on the list with 688 wins in 32 seasons, to take over. Michigan State missed the NCAA tournament last year, but rebounded this season to win the CCHA’s Mason Cup playoff title with a 2-1 win over Miami.
