HOCKEY WORLD IN BRIEF
STANLEY NEVER TO BE LOCKED OUT AGAIN It might sound crazy, but there could be a group of hockey fans hoping another lockout is on the horizon. The NHL reached an out-of-court agreement in early February with two recreational hockey players regarding the fate of the Stanley Cup in years when there is no NHL hockey. During last season’s lockout, Gard Shelley and David Burt, of Toronto, filed a court case which sought to undermine the NHL’s claim that the league controlled the Cup. As part of the settlement, the NHL acknowledged the Cup’s trustees, former NHL official Brian O’Neill and former head of the Hockey Hall of Fame Ian ‘Scotty’ Morrison, could award the trophy to a team outside the NHL during any season the league was shut down. Then to cover Mario Lemieux’s retirement as well as you did, going in-depth into his NHL career, was great. There was also the drug testing issue and how Bryan Berard has proven it to be beneficial already; the lack of recognition for Dion Phaneuf’s stellar play; and, Elston’s best cartoon yet. The issue…
