Marshall matters

Willie Marshall and a host of other American League legends are now a part of a virtual Hall of Fame. Marshall was joined by Johnny Bower, Fred Glover, Frank Mathers, Jody Gage, Eddie Shore and Jack Butterfield in the charter class inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame Feb. 1 during All-Star Classic festivities in Winnipeg. “There are an awful lot of players who made great contributions and probably can’t get into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, but that should be honored for their careers,” said AHL president Dave Andrews. Marshall’s career was the impetus for the Hall’s creation. He played only 16 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs during his 20-year pro career in the 1950s, but is the AHL’s all-time leader in goals (523), assists (852), points (1,375)…

CHICAGO BLUES CHANGE ‘DOLLAR’ BILL What is Bill Wirtz’s problem? This guy doesn't know anything about putting fans in the stands. Not letting the home games be televised is no solution to selling tickets. He needs to invest his money wisely by getting rid of a few players to get one or two players that will score goals and play smart. Olympic Notes

Teams, players setting sights on Turin test OLYMPIC NOTES Everyone has been talking about it for months and now the time has finally arrived. The Olympic Games in Turin are upon us! We asked our correspondents to tell us about the Olympians from their team: how they’re looking going into the games, they’re memories from Salt Lake City and who isn’t going but likely should. Nashville’s Tomas Vokoun is easily good enough to be a starting netminder on any Olympic squad, but thanks to the return of Dominik Hasek he’ll go to Turin as a backup. Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom – typically a staple on Swedish national teams – won’t be this time around because, well, management apparently didn’t think he was good enough. Niedermayer’s knee could be the key OLYMPIC NOTES Bothered by a small…
