Returning to glory
The Czech Republic produced its own version of the “Miracle on Ice” in Nagano in 1998. Eight years have passed since the sensational first-ever Olympic triumph for the Czechs, which was more meaningful with that tournament being the first Olympics in which NHLers participated. But while the 1998 gold is an eight-year-old memory, it has been just eight months since the Czechs won the World Championship in Vienna, Austria – the first time that tournament was loaded with NHL stars, thanks to the lockout. Fifteen players who won gold at the World Championship – and eight members of the 1998 Olympic squad – are playing in Turin, including Dominik Hasek and Jaromir Jagr. A generation of Czech gold diggers has won five world championships and one Olympic tourney in the past decade.…
Roster changes causing havoc
Greenville Grrrowl coach John Marks has an interesting way of explaining the new NHL’s impact on his ECHL team. Imagine you’re golfing. First, you head to the driving range. Then you get to the first hole, put your ball on the tee and get ready to swing. “Then,” Marks explains, “someone yells out ‘Stop! I need your driver, five-iron and wedge.’” Injuries, salary cap issues and frequent roster shuffles in the NHL have had ripple effects in the minors. The Grrrowl lose goaltender Mike Morrison at irregular intervals when duty calls him to the Edmonton Oilers. “You just roll with it,” Marks said. “If you’re a one-man team, you’re in trouble.” One of Morrison’s recent stints in the ECHL resulted in a 6-1 record and 1.96 goals-against average – in nine nights.
