BANG FOR BUCK
If Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon has the NHL’s most team-friendly pact, the next two podium spots belong to linemates BRAD MARCHAND and David Pastrnak, who buy into Boston’s “make less, win more” culture. With a $6.125-million AAV, Marchand is tied as the league’s 63rd-richest forward in 2021-22. Over the past five seasons, Marchand ranks third in NHL scoring and points per game and has earned two first-team and two second-team all-star nods. He’s gone from all-world agitator to a superstar on a Hall of Fame arc. The Sabres aren’t exactly known for wise investments. But center CASEY MITTELSTADT provided value last season on a one-year bridge contract at $874,125, signed after a disheartening 2019-20 in which Buffalo demoted him to the AHL. He found his game under interim coach Don Granato in…
BANG FOR BUCK
When goalie ANTTI RAANTA is healthy and locked in, he’s a top talent. And for the painless sum of $2 million per season, Carolina has a distinguished presence for the next two years. With Raanta and Frederik Andersen the new battery in Raleigh, the former, in particular, looks like a great bet, given all he brings to the table – the 32-year-old has already joked about being a dad to the Hurricanes’ younger Finns. He posted a save percentage above .920 in three of his last five seasons with the Coyotes and Rangers. The Blue Jackets’ blueline has a new look, but one constant is defensive defenseman VLADISLAV GAVRIKOV, who has quietly proven his worth in his first two seasons in Columbus. With a cap hit of just $2.8 million, Gavrikov…
COUNTING THEIR GAME
MIKE MURPHY WOULD BE the first to admit he’d have no chance one-on-one with Hayley Wickenheiser. The Hall of Famer is one of the game’s most gargantuan figures and a superstar who torched just about any opponent who tried to slow her down. That’s exactly why Murphy finds humor in being the one to take a goal or two away from Wickenheiser over the years. As the proprietor of Their Hockey Counts (theirhockeycounts.com), the most comprehensive women’s hockey statistical database on the internet, Murphy is in the business of statistical accuracy. It’s for that reason he came across an error in the data from the early days of the Women’s World Championship: shootout goals were added to a player’s overall goal total. That realization required action, and as it pertained to…
FIMIS FINALLY OFF THE LEASH
GOOD THINGS COME TO those who wait and oh, how the Niagara IceDogs have waited for Pano Fimis. The 2022 NHL draft prospect was taken second overall by Niagara in the 2020 OHL draft, but had yet to make his debut due to last season being cancelled. “It has been a long time, especially for the 2004 class,” said IceDogs GM Joey Burke. “The first thing we did when they got to camp was thank them for their patience and for hanging through the whole thing. It’s unbelievable to think it’s been 17 months since he was drafted.” Once Fimis took to the ice, it quickly became apparent why the prodigious center was so coveted. “We had high expectations and he came in and blew them out of the water,” Burke…
