TOP 75 Players & Teams of all-time
In our 2021 Collectors' Edition, we celebrate the 75th year of The Hockey News by counting down the Top 75 NHL Players and Teams of All-Time. Also, each of our NHL team correspondents provide the all-time all-star lineup and top three teams for the organizations they cover.

Washington Capitals
FORWARDS ALEX OVECHKIN 2005-PRESENT GP 1,197 G 730 A 590 PTS 1,320 PIM 731 YOU CAN’T TALK ABOUT hockey’s greatest goal-scorers without lauding Ovechkin. The patented one-timer from his office remains among the game’s deadliest weapons. Since turning 30, Ovechkin has won four of his record nine Rocket Richard Trophies, plus the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy. The drive for 895 is on. PETER BONDRA 1990-2004 GP 961 G 472 A 353 PTS 825 PIM 679 BEFORE OVECHKIN, THERE WAS Bondra. An eighth-round draft pick in 1990, he dazzled with speed and a lethal shot. For five seasons, from 1993-94 through ’97-98, no one in the league scored more, and he was a catalyst for the 1998 Cup finalists. Bondra was a two-time 50-goal scorer and twice won the NHL’s fastest-skater competition. NICKLAS BACKSTROM 2007-PRESENT GP 1,011 G 258 A 722 PTS 980…

Arizona Coyotes
FORWARDS DALE HAWERCHUK 1981-90 GP 713 G 379 A 550 PTS 929 PIM 478 AN OFFENSIVE SUPERSTAR WHO combined supreme skill, hockey sense and elite consistency, the late Hawerchuk stands alone as the most impressive player in franchise history. While he was overshadowed by Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, Hawerchuk transformed the Jets from a last-place team to a perennial playoff club. SHANE DOAN 1995-2017 GP 1,540 G 402 A 570 PTS 972 PIM 1,353 NO PLAYER HAS APPEARED in more games in a Coyotes or Jets uniform than Doan, and it’s not particularly close. A heart-and-soul leader and power winger, he holds the franchise records for games played, goals, assists, points and game-winners. Now in the front office, Doan’s name is synonymous with the desert team. KEITH TKACHUK 1991-2001 GP 640 G 323 A 300 PTS 623 PIM 1,508 IF DOAN IS REMEMBERED as…

Legacy Voting
A QUARTER-CENTURY HAS PASSED SINCE we unveiled the definitive list of the top 100 players in NHL history. The year was 1997, and The Hockey News was turning 50. We wanted to do something extra special, so 50 of the most astute minds in the game helped us rank the league’s top players ever. (More on those great minds later.) Well, we’ve reached another milestone, and let me tell you, we’ve never felt better as we approach our 75th birthday. To commemorate our diamond anniversary, we’re updating our authoritative list to be as of 2021-22 – this time defining the top 75 NHL players of all-time. Creating this modern list began where you’d expect it to – with the list from 1997. The people who put that ranking together were a cross-section…

Colorado Avalanche
FORWARDS JOE SAKIC 1988-2008 GP 1,378 G 625 A 1,016 PTS 1,641 PIM 614 HE’S THE ONLY NAME on this list to play his entire career (20 seasons) with the Colorado/Quebec franchise, and the 2012 Hall of Famer holds the franchise records for games, goals, assists and points. Sakic won the 1996 Conn Smythe and was the unquestioned 2000-01 NHL MVP, taking both the Hart Trophy and player-voted Pearson Award. PETER FORSBERG 1995-2004, 2008, 2011 GP 591 G 217 A 538 PTS 755 PIM 556 HE’S THE FRANCHISE LEADER in assists per game (0.91) and second in points per game (1.28). Forsberg was the toughest superstar in club history, but injuries limited him to just 708 career NHL games. He won the Calder Trophy in 1994-95, the Hart and Art Ross Trophies in 2002-03 and was inducted into the Hall…
