ST. LOUIS BLUES

IT HAS BEEN A slow, downward trajectory the past two seasons for the Blues since winning the Stanley Cup in 2019, and getting swept in the first round of the playoffs last spring was a stark reminder that changes are needed if the team is to remain a contender. The Blues were eliminated in four games by Colorado – and were outscored 20-7 in the process – but it wasn’t for inconsistent play. They were decimated with injuries and lost leading scorer David Perron to the COVID-19 list. That spelled trouble from the start, and the Blues could never gain any traction. In the end, GM Doug Armstrong still feels the Cup window is open and addressed a need for top-six forwards in the off-season by trading for Pavel Buchnevich and…

THE FIRST WORD

RETURNING TO ‘NORMAL’

TWO SEASONS, TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS roughly nine months apart and two laps around the ice clutching the Stanley Cup…but the latter felt far different for the Tampa Bay Lightning players in 2021. This time, they celebrated to deafening roars from a near-capacity crowd of 18,110 at Amalie Arena, their home rink. The goosebump-inducing moment signalled a shift in the hockey world toward a distant concept called “normal.” No more bubble tournament. No more empty barns. The COVID-19 pandemic is the most globally impactful event since the Second World War, but its stranglehold on our lives, and on our sports, has hopefully, mercifully peaked thanks to the advent of vaccines. Top 50 PLAYERS IN THE NHL

1. CONNOR MCDAVID C • Edmonton Oilers Just when you thought he couldn’t surprise us anymore, Connor McDavid went out and had himself a season for the ages. In leading the Oilers to second place in the North Division, McDavid set the league on fire with 105 points in 56 games. His 1.88 points per game were the most of any NHLer in the past 10 years, and hitting 100 in the shortened season was seen as an incredible feat – even though the Oilers captain was preoccupied with other concerns most of the time. “There was a stretch there going in and out of COVID breaks and we kind of got stalled a bit, so it was tough to think about,” McDavid said. “As we got back in the swing of things…

NEW YORK RANGERS

THAT REBUILD STARTING IN February 2018? Yeah, it’s over. Owner James Dolan, dissatisfied and impatient after watching the Rangers fail to qualify for the playoffs for the third time in four seasons (with their only “appearance” being in the 2020 play-in round), decided to clean house, axing team president John Davidson, GM Jeff Gorton and coach David Quinn. Dolan handed the reins over to new GM Chris Drury. Drury was given the clear mandate to make the post-season. He responded by exploring a trade for disgruntled Buffalo center Jack Eichel, sending Pavel Buchnevich to St. Louis and hiring former Vegas bench boss Gerard Gallant as the Rangers’ new coach. With or without Eichel, Gallant inherits a mix of touted youngsters, a couple of legit stars and some free-agent snarl for the 82-game…
