And most years, many of them surge statistically. Consider Blake Coleman and Mike Reilly, who set themselves up for free agency last season with career-best production rates and were rewarded for it this summer.</p><p>But it&rsquo;s not just mid-lineup guys who follow this trend. This coming season, a wide variety of players at differing stages of their careers will hope to secure their financial futures with strong walk years. However, unlike recent seasons when all eyes fell on top-tier offensive talents such as John Tavares, Taylor Hall or Artemi Panarin, the coming campaign sees a bushel of blueliners looking to pave a path to the bank.</p><p>Plucking these contract-year contributors for your team could pay dividends in your fantasy draft. After all, whether you&rsquo;re in a deep league or a six-team shootout, nabbing that one player who has added incentive to stand out above the rest can be the difference between bragging rights and the singular sadness brought about by a second-place finish.</p><p>The 10 UFAs-to-be listed here are but a smattering of the talent who will have the allure of lucrative new deals on their minds this season. Keep an eye on contract statuses as you pick players. <div class="byline">By Brian Costello</div><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/bc_2020_cmy_094/744637-1-eng-US/bc_2020_cmy_0942.jpg" title="bc_2020_cmy_094" width="691" height="955"></div><p><b>ONE MORE SEASON LIKE</b> the one he just had and we&rsquo;re going to have to give Connor McDavid the Wayne Gretzky treatment.</p><p>By &ldquo;we&rdquo; I mean fantasy-league organizers everywhere, and by &ldquo;treatment&rdquo; I mean divide his points into goals and assists, essentially making him two players in hockey pools. That&rsquo;s how dominating McDavid was in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21.</p><p>It&rsquo;s not officially documented as such, but I give my older brother Mike credit for being the first guy &ndash; way back in 1981 &ndash; to suggest that Gretzky&rsquo;s point total be split as &lsquo;Gretzky Assists&rsquo; and &lsquo;Gretzky Goals.&rsquo; It happened in the pen-and-paper-get-the-calculator days prior to our annual NHL pool.</p><p>It was bad enough that a bunch of Calgary hockey fans had to grudgingly watch Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers weave their offensive dominance in the 1980s. It was doubly worse that we reluctantly picked a bunch of Oilers early in our drafts. The pain intensified when you didn&rsquo;t get first pick. You knew you&rsquo;d need your first <i>two</i> picks to equal what Gretzky, the slam dunk first-overall pick, was going to accumulate.</p><p>So before the start of the 1981-82 draft, Mike said, &ldquo;let&rsquo;s divide Gretzky&rsquo;s points into goals and assists so the lucky guy pulling No. 1 pick doesn&rsquo;t automatically win the pool again.&rdquo; The season before, Gretzky won the scoring race with a then-record 164 points. That was 29 more than the next player, Marcel Dionne. Gretzky&rsquo;s 109 assists that season would&rsquo;ve finished tied for fifth in the scoring race.</p><p>The guys in the pool agreed to that rule, and Gretzky Assists was still an early selection that year. I can&rsquo;t remember how late Gretzky Goals went, but it was probably second round. As 1981-82 unfolded, Gretzky had 120 assists, which would&rsquo;ve finished fifth in points behind Mike Bossy (147), Peter Stastny (139), Dennis Maruk (136) and Bryan Trottier (129). Gretzky&rsquo;s 92 goals would have tied for 17th in scoring.</p><p>In 1982-83, Gretzky&rsquo;s assists alone (125) would have won the scoring race &ndash; a remarkable achievement. That happened another three times in the next four years until Mario Lemieux came along and made things interesting again.</p><p>Point of all this is, are we getting to the point when McDavid&rsquo;s scoring totals should be divided into goals and assists for the purposes of fantasy leagues that use strictly points? That&rsquo;s up to each individual league, of course, but that is the ultimate compliment to a player who made a clean sweep of Hart Trophy balloting, finishing first on all 100 selections by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Yes, there&rsquo;s parity in the NHL, but when it comes to the individual game, McDavid is making a parody of that notion.</p><p>In 2020-21, McDavid Assists (72) would have finished second in the scoring race behind Leon Draisaitl (84 points) and ahead of Brad Marchand (69), Mitch Marner (67) and three other guys at 66.</p><p>What&rsquo;s McDavid&rsquo;s projection for 2021-22? Poolbook projection guru Murray Townsend says McDavid will win the scoring race with 129 points, based on 44 goals and 85 assists. If we break it in two, McDavid Assists are projected to finish 16th in scoring, while McDavid Goals would be 170th in scoring.</p><p>It&rsquo;s something to consider for sure. IT’S 1981 ALL OVER AGAIN!

The Hockey News began at the start of the NHL&rsquo;s 31st season, when the Original Six teams played a 60-game schedule leading up to the Toronto Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup.</p><p>The Hockey News has outlived most of the players from that year, as well as the ownership groups and anyone in the league office. It was 11 years before Willie O&rsquo;Ree made history and played for Boston and 14 years before Wayne Gretzky was born.</p><p>This and the following 15 issues will be full of stories and references celebrating the 75th season, culminating on Oct. 1, 2022, which will be the 75th anniversary of the first issue published. We will go back in time and share stories that previous generations of readers enjoyed. We hope you will see the passion you have for the game of hockey and The Hockey News is the same that previous members of your family had.</p><p>The Hockey News has documented the game of hockey more than any other media outlet has since 1947. Certainly there are the daily newspapers that have covered hockey in their city, but The Hockey News began by covering hockey in every city around the world like no one else has.</p><p>We recognize the responsibility that we all carry at The Hockey News because it is an iconic institution that must survive us all so that future generations can fall in love with the game in a way that only readers of The Hockey News can.</p><p>When I acquired The Hockey News almost four years ago, I knew this historic 75th season was just around the corner, so there was no time to waste to make it better. I have implemented too many improvements to the magazine and website to mention here, but readers from before my acquisition know all too well what has been done.</p><p>I am often asked what was the most surprising thing that I learned when I acquired The Hockey News. Actually it was what I learned before I wrote the cheque. It was that the No. 1 reason for a subscription being cancelled was because the subscriber had passed away. The explanation was that our subscribers loved their issues of The Hockey News right to the very end. This speaks volumes.</p><p>Over the past few years, I have received notes from family members who have written letters of thanks for the years of enjoyment their loved one got from their cherished and collected issues of years of The Hockey News. The sadness that comes when they ask that the subscription be cancelled is hard for them, and it&rsquo;s sad for us to see a member of The Hockey News family leave us as well.</p><p>I wrote about a subscriber (Phil Hoffman) who I had come to know because he wasn&rsquo;t getting some issues resolved with his subscription. We became email pals, and he passed away from COVID-19. His wife, Eileen, called me and asked me personally to cancel his subscription, and we both shed tears.</p><p>As we begin the 75th season, all of us at The Hockey News understand that we are mere stewards of The Hockey News during this brief time. Opening Thoughts

The Hockey News 75th Anniversary

OK, it was just the worst of times, and certainly it was an unprecedented time. And now, we&rsquo;re coming off two reduced schedules that have raised many questions and uncertainties. Fantasy players have plenty of those at any and all times, so let&rsquo;s try to address them each in turn.</p><p>Each reply begins with, &ldquo;Good question,&rdquo; so we&rsquo;ll just leave that out.</p><p><b>1. CAN WE JUST PROJECT PLAYERS&rsquo; POINTS IN 56 GAMES TO AN 82-GAME PACE AND CALL IT A DAY?</b></p><p>The answer to that one is no, no, no.</p><p>The only way that would work is if everybody played the same number of games, which, of course, they never do.</p><p>Let&rsquo;s say five players on a team played every game and scored 20 goals each, and five other players on that team scored 10 while missing half the contests. Simply projecting the half-season players to 82-game paces would give that team 10 separate 20-goal scorers. That would require some sort of team goal-scoring record.</p><p>If somebody replaces an injured top-line player on the power play, for example, they will be getting opportunities otherwise unavailable to them.</p><p>And that&rsquo;s only the beginning. See the next question.</p><p><b>2. OK, BUT IF A TOP-TIER PLAYER PLAYED EVERY GAME, WE COULD PRORATE THEIR PACE OVER 82 GAMES, RIGHT?</b></p><p>It would be a guideline, sure, but it was such a weird year that it&rsquo;s not so clear-cut. There were many unique factors at play: more games against the same opponent, be they weak or strong; less travel, with consecutive games in the same city, so players weren&rsquo;t as mentally or physically tired; fewer off-ice distractions because there weren&rsquo;t many off-ice activities away from the team; players battling COVID, who would sometimes come back still feeling the ill-effects; and taxi squads, which allowed for more lineup fluidity.</p><p>Because of those factors &ndash; and the shorter schedule with more frequent meaningful games &ndash; top players played more, and weaker players played less. If you examine minutes per game, you&rsquo;ll see many bottom-six forwards saw their average ice time reduced by two or more minutes.</p><p><b>3. WITH SO MANY GOALIESGETTING TO PLAY THIS YEAR, WHAT DID WE LEARN ABOUT THE POSITION?</b></p><p>It&rsquo;s not so much what we learned but what we already knew that was further emphasized. If you&rsquo;re good enough to be a professional goalie, you&rsquo;re good enough to play in the NHL, generally speaking. Especially over the short term.</p><p>Because there aren&rsquo;t many NHL spots to go around, many qualified goalies often don&rsquo;t get the chance to show their stuff. When they do, they need to make a lasting impression.</p><p>More goalies than usual got that chance last season due to COVID, taxi squads, injuries and expansion-draft eligibility requirements. Even in a shortened schedule, 98 stoppers &ndash; more than three per team &ndash; still saw NHL action in 2020-21.</p><p>Boston, for example, had an elite tandem in Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak. But injuries pressed first-year pro Jeremy Swayman into action. The untried rookie posted a goals-against average of 1.50 and a save percentage of .945 in 10 games for the B&rsquo;s.</p><p>In Carolina, rookie Alex Nedeljkovic, another injury replacement, went 15-5-3 with a .932 SP and a 1.90 GAA. Jack Campbell, signed as a backup in Toronto, couldn&rsquo;t lose, eventually going 17-3-2 for the Leafs.</p><p>That&rsquo;s not to say we don&rsquo;t still have our Andrei Vasilevskiys and Carey Prices or that one goalie isn&rsquo;t better than the other(s) on a particular team, but rather that a goalie call-up can make a huge impact in a short stint and the right situation. Don&rsquo;t be afraid to pick those untried pros off the waiver wire if you see they&rsquo;re getting a chance. They won&rsquo;t all work out, but some will.</p><p><b>4. WHERE SHOULD WE DRAFT ANDREI VASILEVSKIY?</b></p><p>You normally wouldn&rsquo;t use a high pick on a goalie, but Vasilevskiy is so far above the rest that he&rsquo;s the exception.</p><p>It also depends on how your league handles fantasy points. In one fantasy platform, Vasilevskiy&rsquo;s average draft position was 6.5 and his fantasy points ranked him fourth, behind Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Auston Matthews.</p><p>The top four in your draft should be pretty standard, again, depending on how fantasy points are earned. You have the players mentioned above, plus Nathan MacKinnon.</p><p>Then you start thinking about Vasilevskiy in the tier with Nikita Kucherov, Artemi Panarin, Brad Marchand, Mitch Marner, Patrick Kane and even Sidney Crosby.</p><p>So, No. 5 is the first spot you should take Vasilevskiy. If you&rsquo;re in a 12-team snake draft and he slips down to No. 9 or 10, you should pounce because the elite scorers are probably already gone, and you&rsquo;re picking again soon, so you&rsquo;ll still get a highly productive scorer.</p><p>There may be a slightly higher risk of a goalie getting injured, but ask last year&rsquo;s Jack Eichel drafters how they feel about that.</p><p>The thing about Vasilevskiy is, if he&rsquo;s healthy, you can spend the whole season worry-free at the most worrisome position.</p><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/questions_v_143/744737-1-eng-US/questions_v_1432.jpg" title="questions_v_143" width="1019" height="1345"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>ANDREI VASILEVSKIY</b><br>(KIM KLEMENT-USA TODAY SPORTS)</p></figcaption></div><p><b>5. HOW IMPORTANT ARE ADVANCED STATS IN FANTASY?</b></p><p>As important &ndash; or unimportant &ndash; as you want them to be.</p><p>There&rsquo;s only so much fantasy information you can digest, and advanced stats are way down the priority list. Among the more important ones are a player&rsquo;s scoring history, his likely team assignment, his age and his upside or downside risk.</p><p>And, of course, one non-stat: actually watching the player play the game.</p><p>Tim Stutzle had poor metrics last season. But are you going to let that stop you from drafting him? Not likely.</p><p>If you want to pay attention to the expected-goals stat, go right ahead. But note this stat that might help you more: actual goals scored.</p><p><b>6. WHO WERE LAST YEAR&rsquo;S WAIVER-WIRE SUPERSTARS, AND CAN THEY REPEAT?</b></p><p>Jason Robertson had only three NHL games to his credit before becoming a full-timer in Dallas&rsquo; lineup due to injuries. He finished second on the team in goals, assists and points and was a Calder Trophy finalist. He can repeat, for sure.</p><p>Michael Bunting was a much later addition, scoring 10 goals in 21 games for Arizona. He&rsquo;s a career minor-leaguer who hit a hot streak, which can happen to anyone. Once. That&rsquo;s not to say it won&rsquo;t lead to more of an NHL opportunity, but don&rsquo;t count on him recreating that magic with Toronto. Bunting was pointless in 10 games at the World Championship for Canada at season&rsquo;s end.</p><p><b>7. WHY HAVE TOP DRAFT PICKS HAD SO MUCH TROUBLE MAKING AN IMMEDIATE SCORING IMPACT LATELY?</b></p><p>It&rsquo;s a head-scratcher. Jack Hughes was expected to light it up, but he wasn&rsquo;t ready for the NHL. He was too light on the puck, had little help in New Jersey and didn&rsquo;t get a lot of tough competition experience playing for the U.S. NTDP team.</p><p>It&rsquo;s a delay, not a derailment, but it&rsquo;s one we didn&rsquo;t expect.</p><p>Kaapo Kakko, the No. 2 pick in 2019, has yet to come around, and last year&rsquo;s sure-fire first-overall pick, Alexis Lafreniere, wasn&rsquo;t sure-fire at all, although he picked it up later in the season.</p><p>It&rsquo;s difficult to say if the trend will continue, but the immediate result is that we&rsquo;re not going to want to invest our own high draft picks on unproven top NHL picks.</p><p><b>8. WHY DOESN&rsquo;T BEING A MCDAVID LINEMATE COME WITH ITS OWN GOLD-PLATED SCORING PASS?</b></p><p>Theory time. It&rsquo;s difficult playing with a superstar because you lose track of your own game and tailor it to his. You spend your time trying to get the puck to him because that&rsquo;s what you&rsquo;re &ldquo;supposed&rdquo; to do. How dare I skate the puck up the ice when there&rsquo;s a perfectly good superstar right over there.</p><p>Another issue is third wheels often doesn&rsquo;t join the power play because there are better options on the second line.</p><p>And if McDavid and Draisaitl are on the line, you&rsquo;re an afterthought. Jesse Puljujarvi and Kailer Yamamoto had difficulties in that role as the Oilers searched for the ideal fit.</p><p>The best third wheel in the game last year was (potential new McDavid linemate) Zach Hyman, who was the perfect complement to Marner and Matthews. His job was to retrieve pucks, bang bodies and make life easier for the two stars. He thrived in that role.</p><p>Tom Wilson, a frequent flyer on Washington&rsquo;s top line, is another example. Leo Komarov also took on similar responsibilities for the New York Islanders in the playoffs &ndash; and went all 19 games without a goal.</p><p><b>9. WHICH PLAYER IN RECENT YEARS BROKE THE FANTASY-PROGRESSION MOLD?</b></p><p>Chandler Stephenson was, at best, a low-scoring fourth-liner for years with Washington. Now, instead of a 12-point scorer playing 12 minutes a night, he&rsquo;s a top-six, 50-point-potential guy playing 18 minutes a night in Vegas.</p><p><b>10. ANY BIG SECOND-HALF SURGES FROM LAST YEAR?</b></p><p>Yes, both from the New York Rangers. Mika Zibanejad went from 17 points in his first 28 games to 33 in his next 28. Adam Fox had 16 first-half points and 31 in the second half. Zibanejad had a slow start, Fox, a fantastic finish. Two different scenarios.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

The shortened 2020-21 campaign and all the bubbles and breaks that factored into it means several top prospects will still be rookies this season, even though some of the best have already had a nice dollop of NHL experience.</p><p>In Anaheim, for example, future Ducks cornerstones Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale both played 24 games and looked comfortable doing so. The maximum number of NHL games you can play in a season while still maintaining Calder eligibility for the future is 25.</p><p>Meanwhile, in Montreal, Cole Caufield went straight from the University of Wisconsin to the pro ranks, racking up points in AHL Laval and Montreal before hitting on a wild playoff run that saw the Cinderella Habs go all the way to the final before getting turned into a pumpkin by Tampa Bay. Nonetheless, Caufield has established himself as one of the Canadiens&rsquo; most electrifying talents &ndash; and yet he has only played 10 regular-season games.</p><p>Another fascinating subplot to watch is how early AHL service will help some of the NHL&rsquo;s finest rookies. With a lack of junior games early on (and in the case of the OHL, none at all), a number of high-end teens went to the AHL and had success. They proved they belonged there and got their feet wet as pros. Given his prolific shot output, it&rsquo;s clear the Coyotes are running their offense through him.</p><p><b>VERDICT: BELIEVE</b></p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/martinez_al_297/745016-1-eng-US/martinez_al_2972.jpg" title="martinez_al_297" width="229" height="255"></div><h2><b>ALEC</b>&nbsp;<b>MARTINEZ D, VEG</b></h2><p>Martinez&rsquo;s 82-game pace projected to 14 goals and 50 points. At 33 years old? Martinez did play a larger role in Vegas than he did in his last few seasons with L.A., but there&rsquo;s no guarantee that will continue. It feels risky to buy high on a guy who posted career-best numbers in his 12th season.</p><p><b>VERDICT: BEWARE</b></p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/toffoli_tyl_057/745002-1-eng-US/toffoli_tyl_0572.jpg" title="toffoli_tyl_057" width="229" height="248"></div><h2><b>TYLER</b>&nbsp;<b>TOFFOLI RW, MTL</b></h2><p>Only six NHLers topped Toffoli&rsquo;s 28 goals last season, and he typically plays with an ascendant talent in Nick Suzuki. But he posted a career-high shooting percentage last year. He&rsquo;s still a safe bet for 25 to 30 goals, but don&rsquo;t count on him sustaining a 44-goal pace in 2021-22.</p><p><b>VERDICT: BEWARE</b></p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/pavelski_jo_130/744988-1-eng-US/pavelski_jo_1302.jpg" title="pavelski_jo_130" width="229" height="255"></div><h2><b>JOE</b>&nbsp;<b>PAVELSKI RW, DAL</b></h2><p>Pavelski struggled in his first season as a Star but ended up with 25 goals in 56 games in 2020-21. He was an even-strength scoring machine as Aleksander Barkov&rsquo;s regular left winger and showed a fine touch in winning the AHL scoring crown a couple years back. He&rsquo;s for real.</p><p><b>VERDICT: BELIEVE</b></p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/staal_jorda_275/744960-1-eng-US/staal_jorda_2752.jpg" title="staal_jorda_275" width="229" height="255"></div><h2><b>JORDAN</b>&nbsp;<b>STAAL C, CAR</b></h2><p>Staal averaged the second-most points per game of his career. But his 5-on-5 metrics in shot and scoring-chance generation actually tanked to career-worst rates in 2020-21. The third-highest shooting percentage of his career inflated his fantasy numbers. No, we&rsquo;re not talking about the NHL&rsquo;s annual prospect-a-palooza &ndash; though that&rsquo;s fun, too &ndash; but rather the gathering of armchair GMs eager to prove their fantasy-draft supremacy.</p><p>And we&rsquo;re here to help you gain some fantasy insights on 2021-22 with our traditional in-house pool haul, otherwise known as The Hockey News Mock Draft. This fantasy draft goes 200 players deep, from you-know-who in the No. 1 spot to &ldquo;who&rsquo;s that?&rdquo; in the latter rounds.</p><p>In the 2021-22 THN Mock Draft, we stuck to the same guidelines as the past few years &ndash; snake draft with 10 teams, 20 picks per team, and every team needed two goalies (no more, no less) and at least four defensemen. Goalies get two points per win, plus a bonus point for shutouts. For defensemen and forwards, it&rsquo;s pure points.</p><p>Here are a few highlights:</p><p><b>FIRST-ROUND RICHES:</b> Let&rsquo;s get the obvious out of the way &ndash; Connor McDavid, he of 105 points in 56 games last season, was the No. 1 overall pick. No explanation necessary. Six of the top seven selections were dynamic duos: McDavid was followed by Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl at No. 2 overall, the Leafs&rsquo; Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner went third and seventh, and the Lightning&rsquo;s Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point were taken with consecutive picks at Nos. 5 and 6. Colorado superstar Nathan MacKinnon, the No. 4 pick, wasn&rsquo;t joined by any fellow Avs in the first round, though linemate Mikko Rantanen went early in Round 2. Florida&rsquo;s Jonathan Huberdeau, Boston&rsquo;s Brad Marchand and the Rangers&rsquo; Artemi Panarin filled out the first round.</p><p><b>PASSING THE TORCH:</b> Sidney Crosby, the NHL&rsquo;s leading active scorer (1,325 points) after UFA oldie Joe Thornton (1,529 points), was the first pick in Round 2. &lsquo;The Kid&rsquo; is far removed from fresh-faced youthful exuberance at 34, but he finished in the top 10 in NHL scoring last year, and he&rsquo;s been healthy in seven of the past eight seasons. Plus he&rsquo;s still <i>Sidney Crosby</i>, so if he&rsquo;s on the board after the first wave of 100-point hopefuls, he&rsquo;s worth a shot. Same goes for Chicago&rsquo;s Patrick Kane, who finished tied for fifth in league scoring last year and still has silky puck skills as he enters his age-33 season. As for the rest of the old guard, Alex Ovechkin turns 36 prior to the season, and the NHL&rsquo;s leading active goal-scorer lasted until the fourth round in the THN mock draft. Evgeni Malkin is 35 and has been plagued by injuries in recent years &ndash; but seeing him drop to the seventh round was nevertheless shocking. If he&rsquo;s still around at that point in your draft, snap him up.</p><p><b>BLUELINE SHIFT:</b> You know it&rsquo;s a new day when Cale Makar and Adam Fox go back-to-back as the first two defensemen off the board, with the Avs&rsquo; game-changer the last pick in Round 2 and the Rangers&rsquo; Norris Trophy winner the first pick in Round 3. Washington&rsquo;s John Carlson and Tampa Bay&rsquo;s Victor Hedman went right after Fox, and then it was Vancouver&rsquo;s Quinn Hughes as the last pick in the third round. The next D-men to go were Edmonton&rsquo;s Darnell Nurse and Toronto&rsquo;s Morgan Rielly in Round 4, followed by Ottawa&rsquo;s Thomas Chabot and Nashville&rsquo;s Roman Josi in Round 6.</p><p><b>GOALIE GAP:</b> It&rsquo;s not quite Andrei Vasilevskiy and then everybody else&hellip;but it&rsquo;s close. Tampa Bay&rsquo;s two-time Cup-winning netminder and reigning playoff MVP &ndash; who&rsquo;s looking to lead the NHL in wins for a fifth straight season &ndash; was the first goaltender grabbed, midway through Round 2, and immediately followed by another perennial Vezina contender in Winnipeg&rsquo;s Connor Hellebuyck. There was only one other goalie (Robin Lehner in the fifth) picked before the ninth round, when a run on keepers began.</p><p><b>RARE ROOKIES:</b> Cole Caufield or Trevor Zegras, who you got? Montreal&rsquo;s stunning playoff run got a jolt from Caufield&rsquo;s offensive arsenal, and he was the first freshman taken, in Round 4. Anaheim, meanwhile, appears ready to give Zegras all the top-line responsibility he can handle, and he was the second rookie plucked, in Round 8. After that, though, it was crickets. There wasn&rsquo;t another rookie skater selected until the 17th round (Minnesota&rsquo;s Marco Rossi), followed by Ducks defenseman Jamie Drysdale in Round 18 and the Kings&rsquo; Arthur Kaliyev and Toronto&rsquo;s Nick Robertson as 19th-round flyers. Just one rookie goalie was picked: Florida&rsquo;s Spencer Knight, in the 17th round &ndash; and in related news, Sergei Bobrovsky wasn&rsquo;t drafted at all.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0017-0172/745211-1-eng-US/f0017-012.jpg" title="f0017-01" width="167" height="198"></div><h2><b>1. And while the 2021 NHL draft wasn&rsquo;t viewed as the strongest ever, many of the players at the top have a vision to develop a little more in the NCAA or Europe &ndash; so they&rsquo;ll be sharp once they make the leap. Here&rsquo;s a look at when we believe they&rsquo;ll arrive and what age they&rsquo;ll be when they do.</p><h2><b>2021-22</b></h2><h3><b>QUINTON BYFIELD</b></h3><p><b>C, LOS ANGELES, 19</b></p><p>Getting a chance to play in the AHL last season was a fantastic opportunity for Byfield, the No. 2 overall pick in 2020. Still growing into his huge frame, Byfield got to test himself against men instead of boys and came away with 20 points in 32 games.</p><h3><b>MORITZ SEIDER</b></h3><p><b>D, DETROIT, 20</b></p><p>The German national played in Sweden last year and skated away with the SHL&rsquo;s best defenseman award. The Red Wings desperately need help on the back end and Seider&rsquo;s combination of two-way skill and physicality make him an ideal candidate.</p><h3><b>MATTHEW BOLDY</b></h3><p><b>LW, MINNESOTA, 20</b></p><p>Another youngster who benefitted from AHL work last season, Boldy put up 18 points in 14 games with Iowa after his NCAA season with Boston College ended. He has the size and the offensive creativity to terrorize opposing defensemen.</p><h3><b>ANTON LUNDELL</b></h3><p><b>C, FLORIDA, 20</b></p><p>Lundell has a bright future thanks to his responsible approach, but he also broke out offensively last season with HIFK in Finland. He was a monster for the Finns at the WJC, and with his polished game, don&rsquo;t be surprised if he hits the ground running in the NHL.</p><h3><b>ALEX HOLTZ</b></h3><p><b>RW, NEW JERSEY, 19</b></p><p>The Devils need scoring, and while they&rsquo;ve got talent at center, the wings got even thinner when Kyle Palmieri was traded. Enter Holtz, a gifted sniper who came over from Sweden at the end of last season and got in some reps in the AHL.</p><h2><b>2022-23</b></h2><h3><b>SHANE WRIGHT</b></h3><p><b>C, KINGSTON (OHL), 18</b></p><p>The No. 1 prospect for the 2022 draft is definitely the kind of kid you build a franchise around. Wright captained Canada to gold at the world under-18s despite being one of the youngest players on the roster. His combination of skill and strength make him a force.</p><h3><b>BRAD LAMBERT</b></h3><p><b>RW, JYP (FIN.), 18</b></p><p>Another 2022 draft prospect with the skills to make the NHL jump right away. Lambert has already impressed at the world juniors and playing against men in his home league in Finland. Fast, explosive and competitive, he has high-end skill and maturity.</p><h3><b>OWEN POWER</b></h3><p><b>D, MICHIGAN (BIG TEN), 19</b></p><p>Getting another crack at an NCAA championship is a good reason for Power to stick around one more year in Ann Arbor, where he can continue to dominate. But come autumn of 2022, he'll be more than ready to contribute at both ends of the ice in the NHL.</p><h3><b>MATTY BENIERS</b></h3><p><b>C, MICHIGAN (BIG TEN), 19</b></p><p>Like Power, Beniers can go for an NCAA title before hitting the pro ranks, where he will assuredly be ready. He's a tremendous two-way center who causes offensive havoc around the net and can take key defensive faceoffs.</p><h3><b>MATT SAVOIE</b></h3><p><b>C, WINNIPEG (WHL), 18</b></p><p>A massive offensive driver for USHL Dubuque last season, Savoie will be back in Winnipeg this year. He won't be in the 'Dub' long, though, as the NHL will be calling the 2022 draft prospect thanks to his smarts and quick hands.</p><h2><b>2023-24</b></h2><h3><b>CONNOR BEDARD</b></h3><p><b>C, REGINA (WHL), 18</b></p><p>A Connor who could rival McDavid, Bedard was a terror at the under-18s and set the WHL on fire as a 15-year-old rookie. His shot is lethal, his creativity is off the charts and he's definitely going straight from the No. 1 overall draft slot in 2023 to the NHL.</p><h3><b>ADAM FANTILLI</b></h3><p><b>C, CHICAGO (USHL), 18</b></p><p>He already has a USHL playoff MVP award to his name, and he's not eligible for the NHL draft until 2023. So it goes without saying that Fantilli is going straight to The Show. His speed, skill and size make him a hot one.</p><h3><b>CONOR GEEKIE</b></h3><p><b>C, WINNIPEG (WHL), 19</b></p><p>Based on his rookie results and solid frame, it wouldn't be shocking for this 2022 draft prospect to make the leap a year earlier, but if Geekie stays with the Ice, he'll be in line for an even meatier role as a 19-year-old.</p><h3><b>KENT JOHNSON</b></h3><p><b>C, MICHIGAN (BIG TEN), 20</b></p><p>The third of Michigan's &lsquo;Big 3&rsquo; from the 2021 draft, Johnson is the rawest of the bunch but also has incredible upside thanks to his 1-on-1 skills and silky hands. He only needs some extra time in the weight room and more polish on his overall game.</p><h3><b>BRAYDEN YAGER</b></h3><p><b>C, MOOSE JAW (WHL), 18</b></p><p>He didn't get exceptional status, but got to play in the WHL early anyway due to the pandemic. As it turns out, Yager was more than ready, tying for second in team scoring with 18 points in 24 games. A fast kid who already plays a strong game.</p><h2><b>2024-25</b></h2><h3><b>MATVEI MICHKOV</b></h3><p><b>RW, ST. PETERSBURG (KHL), 19</b></p><p>Michkov's contract with SKA doesn't expire until 2026, but here's hoping he arrives early. The 2023 draft prospect is an offensive wizard.</p><h3><b>QUENTIN MUSTY</b></h3><p><b>LW, SUDBURY (OHL), 19</b></p><p>The first overall pick in the 2021 OHL draft, Musty is a powerful young man who likes to feed his teammates, and he's already 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds.</p><h3><b>IVAN MIROSHNICHENKO</b></h3><p><b>LW, OMSK (KHL), 20</b></p><p>Miroshnichenko has a KHL contract to play out, but the 2022 draft prospect will be well worth the wait. He has a sturdy physical game and high-end skill.</p><h3><b>MACKLIN CELEBRINI</b></h3><p><b>C, SHATTUCK-ST. MARY'S (USHS), 18</b></p><p>Celebrini is a top 2024 draft prospect with incredible hockey sense. He makes plays at high speed, wins puck battles and kills with an elite one-timer.</p><h3><b>CAL RITCHIE</b></h3><p><b>C, OSHAWA (OHL), 19</b></p><p>A top 2023 draft prospect who went second overall behind Musty in this year's OHL draft.
