NHL PLAYOFF PREVIEW

MINNESOTA WILD

MEDIOCRITY HAS long been the story in Minnesota, and many expected more of the same from the Wild this season. That is to say that, while few predicted coach Dean Evason’s charges were set to bottom out in his first full year behind the bench, there weren’t many championing Minnesota as potential world-beaters. And while it’s true the Wild aren’t the latter, they are unquestionably a far more talented group than many anticipated. The results tell that story: after an unsteady start, they have been one of the league’s top teams from mid-February on, with separate five- and six-game winning streaks powering Minnesota into a comfortable spot in the West Division. Preternaturally gifted rookie Kirill Kaprizov has been behind more than his share of the Wild’s successes. Not only has he been…

TRANSFER RULE OPENS DOORS

AN UNPRECEDENTED SHIFT IN the college hockey world is going on right now, the ramifications of which will be truly fascinating. Due to the pandemic, the NCAA granted every student-athlete in the system an extra year of eligibility, meaning even this year’s seniors will be allowed to play again next season. On top of that, the NCAA powers-that-be are about to approve a new transfer rule that will allow every student-athlete to change schools once without being required to sit out a year in between, as is currently the policy. Needless to say, this has been huge on the men’s side of the college game. The NCAA transfer portal has become a spectator sport recently as several hundred players have ventured into the new or the unknown. Perhaps the most heartening…

1971 MEMORIAL CUP

THE GOLDEN GUYS

A HALF-CENTURY HAS passed since Andre Savard and his Quebec Remparts teammates hoisted the 1971 Memorial Cup on home ice. It was a remarkable triumph, made even more so given the drama leading up to it. It was a year of hockey that, 50 years later, is still fresh in the minds of those who were a part of it. “You remember the players, the moments,” Savard said. “The memories will always be there.” The QMJHL was wrapping up just its second season in the spring of ’71. The league had been established in the lead-up to a large-scale reorganization of junior hockey by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, the precursor to the CHL. Canada’s top junior ranks had been split into major junior and a second-tier circuit, now known as Jr.…

NHL PLAYOFF PREVIEW

EDMONTON OILERS

AS CONNOR MCDAVID AND Leon Draisaitl dominate the statistical leaderboards and trade individual hardware year after year, Oilers fans clamor for a Stanley Cup chase before the two superstars’ primes are wasted. With a team from the North Division guaranteed to make it to the final four and the Oilers looking more complete than they have in years, could this be the season for a deep playoff run? There’s no denying that the Oilers, when they’re on their game, bring an offensive magic that few if any teams can match. McDavid’s peerless talent exists on a plane separate from that of any other player. He’s poised to join Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe as the only players to win three scoring titles by 24. Led by No. 97’s brilliance, the Oilers…
