Trade Deadline Preview 2021

Trade Deadline Preview 2021

In our XL-sized Trade Deadline Preview, we have breakdowns for each NHL team, plus trade-bait power rankings, and we explain why this will be the most unusual deadline ever. Also in the issue, we pay tribute to hockey’s Dad, Walter Gretzky. In addition: features on McDavid & Draisaitl, Carter Hart, and a look back at the 1971 Habs’ magical run 50 years ago. Plus, we take an in-depth look at the issues faced by gay men in hockey. We also go 1-on-1 with Ryan Reaves, pick our NHL All-Star teams, and count down the best rookie crops. All this and more spread over 100 pages!

Ryan Reaves

1-on-1 with Ryan Reaves

WHEN NBA players stopped their playoffs in order to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake by Wisconsin police last season, their counterparts in the NHL were caught rather flat-footed. While the NBA’s stars were tuned in to the Black Lives Matter movement – as were their peers in the WNBA, who had already been protesting against racial injustice – the majority-white hockey world was still trying to figure out what to do in the face of a hot-button social issue. So in the middle of an already extraordinary post-season that saw NHL teams sequestered in two playoff bubbles, the players needed guidance. A number of them went to Ryan Reaves. The Vegas Golden Knights winger stands out, not only for his rugged play and intimidating presence, but also as one of the…

WOMEN

RUGGIERO IN THE RUNNING

IN 2020, TAMPA BAY Lightning director of hockey administration Liz Sylvia Koharski became the first woman in six years to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup. She’s just the 17th woman in history to receive the honor – out of 2,394 names. That’s just over half of one percent. Ever so slowly, pro sports organizations are opening their doors to more women. In November, Kim Ng made headlines when she was named GM of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins, becoming the first woman to hold the position in any North American major pro sports league. Two months earlier, the Florida Panthers had considered U.S. women’s hockey legend Angela Ruggiero for their vacant GM position. “I got a call out of the blue,” said the Hall of Famer and four-time Olympic…

BUZZ

DREAMING OF A STARRY NIGHT

AS HAS BEEN THE case with the 3-on-3 tournament format, we’ve chosen an all-star lineup for each division. There must be at least one player from each team in the division on the roster. We’ve gone with a roster of six forwards, three defensemen and two goalies, with a maximum of two representatives per team. NORTH DIVISION FORWARDS CONNOR MCDAVID (EDM): There is no better or more exciting player in the world today. AUSTON MATTHEWS (TOR):Poised to become the first true superstar in Leafs franchise history, Matthews could score 50 goals. MARK SCHEIFELE (WPG): He had an 11-game point streak in which he produced eight goals and 18 points, and he’s been a beast. DRAKE BATHERSON (OTT): On pace to score 20 goals. Tied the Senators record for consecutive games with a goal with six. LEON DRAISAITL…

Trade Deadline

The best swaps from the past 25 years

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO EDMONTON OILERS ACQUIRE: > Dwayne Roloson MINNESOTA WILD ACQUIRE: > 2006 first-round pick (Trevor Lewis)> 2007 conditional third-round pick (Spencer Machacek) WHEN DWAYNE ROLOSON ARRIVED in Edmonton, the Oilers’ grasp on the final Western Conference playoff spot was tenuous, and GM Kevin Lowe understood that failing to acquire a goaltender could have been the death knell for his outfit’s post-season chances. Throughout the campaign, Edmonton’s netminding had been atrocious. Not one of Ty Conklin, Jussi Markkanen or Mike Morrison were reliable, and the situation was dire as the trade deadline neared. In 22 games from Jan. 1 through March 7, the trio combined for a ghastly .871 save percentage, despite the Oilers allowing the fewest shots per game of any team. Thus, the Wild’s 36-year-old backup keeper was acquired to stabilize matters. Expectations were not…
