Trade Deadline Preview 2021

In our XL-sized Trade Deadline Preview, we have breakdowns for each NHL team, plus trade-bait power rankings, and we explain why this will be the most unusual deadline ever. Also in the issue, we pay tribute to hockey’s Dad, Walter Gretzky. In addition: features on McDavid & Draisaitl, Carter Hart, and a look back at the 1971 Habs’ magical run 50 years ago. Plus, we take an in-depth look at the issues faced by gay men in hockey. We also go 1-on-1 with Ryan Reaves, pick our NHL All-Star teams, and count down the best rookie crops. All this and more spread over 100 pages!

FIVE HOCKEY / SUPERHERO CROSSOVERS

1. THE GOLDEN ADVENTURES OF BRETT HULL This three-issue comic book series was sold at St. Louis-area McDonald’s restaurants during 1993-94. The story stars Brett Hull, who gets knocked unconscious in a game and wakes up 100 years later; just in time to help the Blues win the 2094 Stanley Cup. Hockey players in the future wear armor and augment their limbs with cybernetic attachments – the latter of which Hull staunchly refuses, believing his skills don’t require any artificial upgrades. Also, the Blues eat team meals at McDonald’s, and their rink hovers above St. Louis because it’s the future. 2. MIGHTY DUCKS: THE ANIMATED SERIES Thanks to the immense popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, practically every other cartoon in the 1990s was about crime-fighting critters. This Saturday morning Disney cartoon…

The Countdown

HANDS UP THOSE OF you who had Pius Suter and Kevin Lankinen in the Calder Trophy pool. How about Philipp Kurashev or Artem Zub? Mikey Anderson? Those are the names of Calder-eligible rookies who have been most impressive through the early part of this most unusual NHL season. The favorites, such as Alexis Lafreniere, Kirill Kaprizov and Tim Stutzle? Their results so far have been somewhat mixed, but that doesn’t mean they won’t make a late surge for rookie-of-the-year honors. The Chicago Blackhawks are in the midst of a rebuild, so we knew they’d be leaning on younger players. But it did surprise many in the off-season, with plenty of veteran goalies available as free agents, when Hawks GM Stan Bowman said he was going to rely on his in-house stoppers instead.…

HOCKEY WORLD LOSES A GIANT

IT WAS CLEAR FROM an early age that William Franklin Orr was going to become a wordsmith and a master of the one-liner. As the second-youngest of seven children growing up on a farm in southern Ontario at the tail end of the Depression, the future hockey writer was certainly not spoiled by excess. “Frank always used to say he didn’t mind wearing hand-me-downs,” said his younger brother, Jim. “But he didn’t like the skirts very much.” Anyone who ever had the good fortune to cross paths with Frank Orr during his illustrious hockey-writing career would not be the least bit surprised that he came up with such a witty revelation at such a young age. The ability to do that, and weave masterful stories and columns for the Toronto Star…

ONE AND DONE: DEPARTING A DYNASTY

GLENN ‘CHICO’ RESCH could not make up his mind. Should he ask his New York Islanders boss, GM Bill Torrey, to trade him or not? This was back in June 1980, and the Isles had just won their first Stanley Cup. That was the good news. The bad news was Resch – going on 32 – had lost the starting goaltending gig to 29-year-old Billy Smith and wasn’t going to win it back. That did it. Resch wanted out. Ah, but Torrey wasn’t one to capitulate to such player whims, serious or not. “Now that we’d won the Cup,” Resch said, “the goal had been satisfied for the team and for me. By leaving, I wouldn’t be sticking them in a hole. So, I asked Torrey to trade me.” Torrey listened and…
