Even though the NHL has become big business, and the players, managers and executives are true professionals at their jobs, the hockey fanatic tunes in and watches because the on-ice activity is a full step removed from the realities of life. And the adrenaline rush keeps him or her coming back for more.</p><p>So when the real world was dealt a severe blow last March and the coronavirus pandemic altered, and continues to alter, the way we do things, the sports world was affected as well. Suddenly, this mode of entertainment was gone. The return-to-play recovery efforts in August and September to ice an NHL playoffs that saw Tampa Bay win a Stanley Cup title were truly remarkable. But we&rsquo;re all left hanging. What&rsquo;s next?</p><p>How is the 2020-21 regular season going to unfold? And for the hockey fanatics who take it a step further and dive head-first into the fascinating world of fantasy hockey every year, how are they going to get their managerial fix?</p><p>Consider the world of &ldquo;Fantasy Fantasy Hockey.&rdquo; I tried it last spring with my colleague Matt Larkin and the band of 16 managers in our regular hockey pool league. Like fantasy leagues everywhere, our playoffs take place during the final few weeks of the regular season. So when the remainder of the NHL season was scuppered due to COVID-19, the contending teams were taken out at the knees.</p><blockquote class="pullQuote">SO FANTASY FANTASY HOCKEY REMAINS A LAST-DITCH ALTERNATIVE FOR 2020-21, DEPENDING ON HOW THE REAL WORLD UNFOLDS</blockquote><p>One of our fantasy team managers came up with the creative idea of having a season based on the results of head-to-head simulated computer play in EA Sports&rsquo; <i>NHL 20</i>. We started from scratch and held a Zoom draft so 23-man rosters were created. Player ratings on <i>NHL 20</i> are based on authentic player attributes and the draft unfolded like you&rsquo;d expect from a group of hardcore hockey fans. The 16 team rosters were fairly evenly matched with some lineups slightly stronger at forward, defense or goaltending. We learned playing a left winger on the right side cut into his player rating a bit. And, all things being equal, having three left D and three right D was ideal.</p><p>The beauty in this is that games were played nightly using the EA Sports computer. You didn&rsquo;t need to know how to work the console controller to get a result. You just needed to draft well and later on make trades. The simulated games based on our unique rosters were broadcast for each manager to watch. A 60-minute game could be played in about 35 minutes. Stats were gathered after each game and manually tabulated so managers could assess their strengths and identify weaknesses.</p><p>A shortened round-robin season and playoffs took a few months to play out. Led by Nikita Kucherov, Jack Eichel, Joe Pavelski, Dougie Hamilton and Ben Bishop, I won my final three games to finish in a tie for first place. Larkin lost his first three games, but then he made some trades acquiring players who were strong physically. He won three straight before losing in the qualifying round of the playoffs. In the end, I lost in overtime of the championship final.</p><p>So Fantasy Fantasy Hockey remains a last-ditch alternative for 2020-21, depending on how the real world unfolds. It has almost all the things we crave in fantasy hockey &ndash; except for real games around which to base our managerial skills. We recommend it to hardcore poolies. The Season of Giving

Fantasy leagues, that is, not friends. You want to go in two or three or eight more leagues. You can do it. Online fantasy sites aren&rsquo;t just for hosting your own group, they have leagues that host themselves, open to everyone. So go crazy in this pandemic-altered year, but do your homework. Here&rsquo;s a primer.</p><h2><b>&gt;PREPARATION</b></h2><p>Your online draft site will automatically draft players for you if you&rsquo;ve done nothing at all in preparation, based on average draft position or their own ratings. It also serves as a guide to help you determine your picks.</p><p>You&rsquo;ll generally find people who rely on the auto-draft strategy at the bottom of the standings by the end of the season. But they&rsquo;re contributing to your winnings, so don&rsquo;t tell them.</p><p>You don&rsquo;t want to draft from the same list as your opponents, you want to be better. That means taking into account such factors as rookies, sleepers, injury returns, potential rebounders, breakout players and more. You want access to injury reports. The online draft site will show an icon with an injury designation, but it may not go into detail. Less prepared drafters will hesitate to pick those players just to be on the safe side, so players that are day-to-day with a hangnail could fall to you.</p><h2><b>&gt;ACTUAL DRAFT</b></h2><p>Assuming a 12-manager league, draft position doesn&rsquo;t matter for your first-round pick. If you draw first overall, you take Connor McDavid and then wait 23 picks until your next selection, which will also be a high-scoring forward.</p><p>There are, of course, strategies in a draft, but not for the first two rounds. You take the best scoring forward when it&rsquo;s your turn. Not a defenseman and certainly not a goalie.</p><p>To illustrate how good the first 24 picks are for forwards, Brayden Point finished 26th in scoring last year, followed by Patrik Laine and Mark Stone. A few places down were Anze Kopitar and Aleksander Barkov.</p><p>Somebody in your draft will take a goalie in the first or second round. Last year, Andrei Vasilevskiy went early. This is good for you because it leaves more elite forwards from which to choose. No one is going to keep picking goalies at the top of the draft, and there&rsquo;s only 12 teams picking, so you&rsquo;re still going to get a good goalie later.</p><p>The third or fourth round is a good time to go after high-scoring defensemen. There&rsquo;s only so many of them, and you need one or two of the top ones. Last year, the top-scoring D-man was John Carlson at 13th, followed by Roman Josi at 25th and Victor Hedman at 53rd. Our rankings this year don&rsquo;t list a defenseman until after the 30th position.</p><p>Get an elite defenseman in the third round &ndash; and another in the fourth if there&rsquo;s still a top one available. They&rsquo;ll be listed below available forwards in projected scoring but they&rsquo;re more valuable at that point because you need defensemen in your lineup and you won&rsquo;t get a comparable blueliner later, while you will at forward.</p><p>Then pick goalies in the next two rounds. You might not get the very best, but you&rsquo;ll get good ones. Many drafters tend to take a goalie early and then forget about them for a while.</p><p>So, by the sixth round of your 16-round draft you&rsquo;ve got two elite scorers, two elite-scoring D-men and two solid goalies. That&rsquo;s the core of your team.</p><p>You can spend the next four or so rounds taking the best players available, keeping in mind you&rsquo;ll need more D-men.</p><p>This is also the range when people like to jump on rookies. Last year, drafters were itching to get their hands on 2019 No. 1 pick Jack Hughes, but when was too soon? The other top rookie was Kaapo Kakko, and they both offered promising production. Both flopped as rookies, at least from a fantasy perspective. With Hughes, you could see he wasn&rsquo;t strong enough for the NHL. Both will be fine eventually, but as rookies should we have let someone else worry about them? Not at all.</p><p>At that point in the draft, selecting a rookie can make your team, but it won&rsquo;t break it. In other words, if they don&rsquo;t work out it doesn&rsquo;t matter, but if they do you hit the jackpot. There&rsquo;s only upside in taking your shot.</p><p>It&rsquo;s the same deal for your late-round picks. There&rsquo;s not much point picking guys who get a predictable mediocre number of points. This is where you roll the dice on sleepers, potential breakout players, rebound players, injury returnees and get a third goalie.</p><p>This year&rsquo;s top rookie, incidentally, Alexis Lafreniere, isn&rsquo;t a worry. He&rsquo;s mentally seasoned by full schedules against legitimate competition, and strength won&rsquo;t be a problem. Take him.</p><h2><b>&gt;STRATEGY</b></h2><p>The draft site will provide an ADP (Average Draft Position) listing to help you pick your players. That&rsquo;s not likely to help with your speculative picks, outlined in the previous section, but it can still help. For example, for managers who don&rsquo;t show up for the draft, you know who they&rsquo;re taking next with auto-pick. That&rsquo;s helpful if they&rsquo;re just in front or behind you. You might be able to save the guy you want for later and take a higher-rated player earlier.</p><p>It can also help you determine when to take your speculative picks. Many drafters will see a guy next on the list and want to take him, or somebody close to him. They&rsquo;re scared to stray too far off the script because they&rsquo;re not prepared. If the guy you like is way down the ADP list but high on your list, you can wait and get him later. Take a higher-ranked guy you don&rsquo;t like as much earlier and you can get both of them.</p><p>The other thing is having your eye on a player you desperately want&hellip;and waiting, waiting through multiple picks. And then the person before you drafts him. It happens all the time, or seems to, and it can throw you off. Then you panic and pick someone you don&rsquo;t want. Be prepared. Have more than one pick ready.</p><p>If you have multiple teams, you&rsquo;re going to find you&rsquo;re getting the same players, because your thought process and strategy is the same. That could be a problem if it&rsquo;s a key player and he gets injured. That&rsquo;s going to affect a lot of your teams. To avoid this scenario, select the next player on your list and spread out your picks a bit if the next guy is of equal value.</p><h2><b>&gt;DURING THE SEASON</b></h2><p>Once the season starts, the main thing to do is watch the waiver wire. Some participants, especially early on, are going to make mistakes. It&rsquo;s part of hockey that players go through hot and cold spells &ndash; and some happen at the start of the season. Some people will overreact. &ldquo;<i>This guy can&rsquo;t score, I&rsquo;m getting rid of him.&rdquo;</i></p><p>Last year, Kyle Connor got off to a slow start, with just four points in his first 10 games. People were dumping him, and more patient people were adding him as no-brainers. He ended up with 38 goals and 73 points in 71 games.</p><p>By the same token, you have to know when to cut guys loose. Not to hammer on Hughes and Kakko again, because both will become good players, but last year they weren&rsquo;t, and if you had them on your roster you were left waiting and waiting. Defenseman Matt Dumba was another. He&rsquo;d already had his breakout season (50 points in 82 games) and was coming off an injury season where he had 22 points in 32 games. Smart people were grabbing this sleeper off the heap lower than he should&rsquo;ve gone in the draft and then wondering what went wrong (24 points in 69 games).</p><p>You just know that as soon as you dump them they&rsquo;ll break out. It&rsquo;s one of the unwritten rules of fantasy leagues. So, give them what you think is a significant amount of time. If you&rsquo;re in multiple leagues, find out if anybody else is picking up these guys after they&rsquo;ve been dropped. If nobody else wants them, then you don&rsquo;t either. If dumping them makes your team better, then do it.</p><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/murray_ston_016/684783-1-eng-US/murray_ston_0162.jpg" title="murray_ston_016" width="1021" height="1143"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>PHILIPP GRUBAUER & MARK STONE</b></p> <span class="photo-credit">(PERRY NELSON-USA TODAY SPORTS)</span></figcaption></div><p>Don&rsquo;t get too worked up about an out-of-character hot streak. It&rsquo;s something that happens to a lot of players. By the time you grab that player off waivers and put him in your lineup, the hot streak is over.</p><p>Dominik Kubalik is a hot-and-cold player. In his first 27 games last year, he had six goals and 10 points and was a healthy scratch a couple of times. After that, he went on a tear in which he scored 10 goals in eight games. Once that was over, he had one point in seven games. Another example is Zach Sanford. He had a four-goal game for St. Louis. It took him 21 games to get his next four goals.</p><p>It&rsquo;s better to anticipate the hot streak. If a key player is injured, somebody will replace him. That&rsquo;s the guy you want.</p><p>One other area to keep an eye on is goalies. They&rsquo;re always getting hurt, and there&rsquo;s often a young guy waiting to prove himself. Last year, Joonas Korpisalo went down in Columbus, and Elvis Merzlikins stepped in and was spectacular. If you see a situation where the main guy goes down, jump on the backup, especially if he&rsquo;s an unproven commodity. For many of those players they&rsquo;ll never be more motivated to perform their best.</p><p>The final piece of advice is just to keep at it. It&rsquo;s a long season, and others will lose interest and miss things. You can pick up on that, and it may make all the difference between winning and losing.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Barzal had 85 points in 2017-18, making him the only recent freshman to put up a point per game while playing the full season. Panarin had 77 points in 2015-16, which was still great, but not quite on pace.</p><p>Given the exceptional players who have been part of this cohort &ndash; everyone from Auston Matthews to Elias Pettersson to Patrik Laine &ndash; it&rsquo;s clear just how difficult it is to put up gaudy numbers in the NHL as a rookie, even when you have a proven pedigree.</p><p>So it&rsquo;s important to place rookies in the appropriate slot when you&rsquo;re drafting your fantasy team this year. Sure, the bright, shiny names will call to you early, but make sure to keep in perspective that these kids are all learning on the fly, and the road to glory can be marked by ups and downs for even the most elite.</p><p>Having said that, rookies also have the opportunity to surpass expectations and can often sneak up on opponents who don&rsquo;t have much of a book on the new kids. Another consideration for this season (and 2021-22) is that the flattened salary cap is going to make entry-level contracts look very favorable to NHL franchises. While the league has already been skewing younger in recent years and many youngsters have taken over their respective teams, expect more opportunities for kids thanks to the cost certainty.</p><p>This year&rsquo;s crop of rookies is as exciting as ever thanks to a combination of upstart teens and kids in their early 20s who are ready to make an immediate impact. While it&rsquo;s important to grab as many point-per-game players as possible in the early rounds, it&rsquo;s just as vital to make sure your depth picks are consistent producers. It will likely be the success &ndash; or failure &ndash; of the bottom half of your fantasy roster that is the difference between winning and losing.</p><p>In the 2020-21 THN Mock Draft, we stuck to the same guidelines as the past few years &ndash; 20 selections per team, and every team needed two goaltenders (no more, no less) and at least four defensemen. Goalies get two points per win, plus a bonus point for shutouts. For defensemen and forwards, it&rsquo;s pure points.</p><p>Here are a few highlights from this year&rsquo;s pick-and-pray proceedings:</p><p><b>GET CONNOR:</b> It&rsquo;s no big surprise to see Connor McDavid taken No. 1 overall, even though teammate Leon Draisaitl claimed the Art Ross Trophy last season and delivered a slightly higher point-per-game rate (1.55 compared to McDavid&rsquo;s 1.52). Draisaitl went No. 2, and eight of the top 10 picks were dynamic duos, with Colorado&rsquo;s Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, Tampa Bay&rsquo;s Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov and Boston&rsquo;s David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand joining the Oilers&rsquo; awesome twosome in the first round.</p><p><b>THE OLD GUARD:</b> It wasn&rsquo;t so long ago that Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Kane and John Tavares were vying for first overall. They&rsquo;ve been relegated to second-round status heading into 2020-21.</p><p><b>A-PLUS D-MEN:</b> Washington&rsquo;s John Carlson was the runaway scoring leader among NHL defenseman last season, and he was the first blueliner off the board when he went early in Round 3. Carlson was followed by 2019-20 rookie revelations Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar in Round 4, with Roman Josi, Victor Hedman and Rasmus Dahlin going in Round 5.</p><p><b>CREASE WATCH:</b> Andrei Vasilevskiy has led the league in wins for three straight seasons and the Tampa Bay goalie enters 2020-21 as the odds-on favorite to do it again. He was the first goalie to go &ndash; as the first pick in Round 4 &ndash; and Dallas&rsquo; Ben Bishop went immediately afterwards, and was soon followed by Vegas&rsquo; Robin Lehner, Montreal&rsquo;s Carey Price and Winnipeg&rsquo;s Connor Hellebuyck.</p><p><b>KIDS AT PLAY:</b> Just a handful of rookies were selected, led by Rangers&rsquo; No. 1 overall draftee Alexis Lafreniere, who went late in Round 8 and was followed by Minnesota&rsquo;s promising Kirill Kaprizov early in Round 9. Colorado defenseman Bowen Byram was a rather surprising 12th-round pick, and Toronto&rsquo;s Nick Robertson and Florida&rsquo;s Owen Tippett were the only other freshmen skaters taken, as late flyers in the 19th round. The MVP of the 2020 world juniors and first overall pick by the Rangers brings a tremendous combination of skill, vision and physicality to the table, and on a rising New York team, he&rsquo;ll have talent to play off. The sky truly is the limit for Lafreniere.</p><h3><b>KIRILL KAPRIZOV LW, 23</b></h3><p>Finally, <i>finally</i> the Minnesota Wild get a chance to see what Kaprizov can do at the NHL level after the silky Russian winger committed to leaving the KHL. At 23, Kaprizov won&rsquo;t have to worry about man-strength; he just has to get used to the rinks and style over here. We say he gets up to speed quickly.</p><h3><b>ALEXANDER ROMANOV D, 20</b></h3><p>Having already dazzled at two WJC tournaments as well as the Habs&rsquo; bubble training camp, Romanov can now bring his show full time to Montreal. His big shot and penchant for delivering thunderous hits makes him dynamic in multiple aspects of the game. He&rsquo;s a big addition to the Canadiens&rsquo; blueline.</p><h3><b>NICK ROBERTSON LW, 19</b></h3><p>A high-riser with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Robertson staked a claim to a roster spot with his performance at the return to play camp and qualifying round. With speed, tenacity and dynamite skill, Robertson fits in perfectly with Toronto&rsquo;s high-powered forward corps. Plus, he&rsquo;s coming off an astounding 55 goals in 46 games with OHL Peterborough.</p><h3><b>GRIGORI DENISENKO RW, 20</b></h3><p>He&rsquo;ll get some competition from fellow Florida young gun Owen Tippett, but Denisenko has a tantalizing two-way game that will make him a valuable commodity for years. The powerful winger has speed, a great compete level and an excellent shot. Most recently, he captained Russia to silver at the WJC.</p><h2><b>&gt;2021-22</b></h2><h3><b>COLE CAUFIELD RW, 20</b></h3><p>His play at the world juniors was a letdown, but his freshman stats with NCAA Wisconsin were more than enough proof that Caufield is a tiny force of nature. The devastating shooter will spend another season with the Badgers where he can get stronger and round out his game before he joins Montreal. It&rsquo;s scary to think of him getting more dangerous.</p><h3><b>TIM STUTZLE LW, 19</b></h3><p>Spending 2020-21 in Germany allows Stutzle to keep developing his game against top talent as a member of Adler Mannheim. As it is, the youngster put up one of the most impressive teenaged campaigns in league history, and his Patrick Kane-esque game means he&rsquo;ll be coming to Ottawa very soon.</p><h3><b>LUCAS RAYMOND LW, 19</b></h3><p>Like many of his high-end Euro cohorts, Raymond will stay in Sweden where the pandemic isn&rsquo;t delaying the schedule like in North America. So the coveted prospect will continue to hone a lethal offensive game that is just beginning to reveal itself. With another year in the SHL, he&rsquo;ll be ready for the NHL.</p><h3><b>TREVOR ZEGRAS C, 20</b></h3><p>There&rsquo;s a chance Zegras fast-tracks to Anaheim this season, but if he needs some time in the AHL with San Diego to get stronger, it&rsquo;s no shame. Once Zegras does reach the NHL, however, his elite playmaking ability will be a boon for a rebuilding Ducks squad that needs a serious injection of elite young talent.</p><h3><b>QUINTON BYFIELD C, 19</b></h3><p>Like Zegras, Byfield could be a 2020-21 guy, but the fractured schedule may be a blessing in disguise for the big teen. Byfield has a world of potential and will be nearly unstoppable once he builds further on his frame, but if he needs a little more time in junior, that&rsquo;s fine. As it is, his size, skill and skating make him a future NHL star.</p><h2><b>&gt;2022-23</b></h2><h3><b>OWEN POWER D, 19</b></h3><p>He&rsquo;ll battle Finnish center Aatu Raty for first-overall status in the 2021 draft, and Power&rsquo;s offensive upside from the blueline makes him one to watch fantasy-wise. Heck, the University of Michigan commit does pretty much everything right, and his size makes him a candidate to be the next Victor Hedman. So just watch for him, period.</p><h3><b>CHAZ LUCIUS C, 19</b></h3><p>An incredibly powerful offensive force, Lucius is one of the latest gems from the U.S. NTDP, where he earned a call-up to the under-18 team and didn&rsquo;t look out of place as a top-line center. The University of Minnesota commit is a pure scorer who always wants to put his stamp on a game. Don&rsquo;t expect him to remain in college for long.</p><h3><b>SHANE WRIGHT C, 18</b></h3><p>He&rsquo;s all but a lock to go first overall in 2022, as far away as that is. When you&rsquo;re granted exceptional status to join the OHL a year early, then lead the league in rookie scoring, the hype is warranted. Strong on his skates and gifted with the ability to pile up points, Wright will be a two-way phenom.</p><h3><b>BRAD LAMBERT C, 19</b></h3><p>The Finnish-Canadian prodigy has already made his Liiga debut and will get more experience playing against men in the coming years in Finland. Once he hits these shores, he&rsquo;s not stopping in the minors. He needs to work on his &lsquo;D,&rsquo; but the 2022 prospect&rsquo;s speed and dynamic skill are impossible to ignore.</p><h3><b>MATT SAVOIE C, 18</b></h3><p>His WHL career got off to a rocky start, but there&rsquo;s no denying his skill and speed. Savoie, who was denied an exceptional-status designation for the WHL, still got into 22 games with the Winnipeg Ice last season.</p><h2><b>&gt;2023-24</b></h2><h3><b>ADAM FANTILLI C, 18</b></h3><p>Fantilli was set to join the USHL&rsquo;s Chicago Steel, where he&rsquo;s sure to get great development. An incredible skater and top prospect for the 2023 draft, he&rsquo;s a highly skilled phenom with major acceleration in his game.</p><h3><b>CONNOR BEDARD C, 18</b></h3><p>The first player ever to get exceptional status in the WHL, Bedard was snapped up by Regina with the No. 1 selection in the 2020 bantam draft. And why not? The kid already has an NHL shot, and his deceptiveness with the puck will make him even harder to slow down in the offensive zone. Look for him to battle Fantilli for first overall in the 2023 draft.</p><h3><b>RILEY HEIDT LW, 18</b></h3><p>Going second overall in the 2020 WHL bantam draft, Heidt is a superb skater who will be tasked with leading Prince George back up the standings in the &lsquo;Dub.&rsquo; While Heidt needs to get stronger, he&rsquo;s got plenty of time to do it, as his NHL draft year isn&rsquo;t until 2023.</p><h3><b>BRAYDEN YAGER C, 18</b></h3><p>Heidt&rsquo;s teammate with the Saskatoon Contacts, Yager went third overall in that stacked WHL bantam draft. His ultimate destination will be his home province&rsquo;s Moose Jaw Warriors, but first he&rsquo;ll team up once again with Heidt in Saskatoon. Yager is a potent offensive weapon who can produce as the shooter or the set-up man. It will be such a noticeable changing of the guard that we can expect to see at least 10 new starters and 10 new backups &ndash; that&rsquo;s almost one-third of the workforce &ndash; by the start of 2025-26.</p><p>That&rsquo;s because, in addition to having two more goalies come in with Seattle, almost half of today&rsquo;s 62 NHL goalies are 32 or older. So in five years&rsquo; time, they&rsquo;ll be 37 or older. And the vast majority of those greybeards will be past their best-before date.</p><p>So who are the 20 or so new NHL goalies going to be in 2025-26? We&rsquo;ve compiled a list of the best-bets to consider for five years down the road. They&rsquo;re as young as 18 now, so that means they&rsquo;ll be 23 or older and entering their impact years by 2025-26. They&rsquo;ve been identified by scouts as NHL goalies of the future. We&rsquo;ve sorted them by degrees of certainty.</p><p>Here are 2019-20 starters who won&rsquo;t be No. 1s in 2025-26, with their age as of Jan. 1, 2021: Henrik Lundqvist (38), Pekka Rinne (38), Mike Smith (38), Corey Crawford (36), Marc-Andre Fleury (36), Jimmy Howard (36), Carter Hutton (35), Ben Bishop (34), Devan Dubnyk (34), Jonathan Quick (34), Tuukka Rask (33) and Cam Talbot (33).</p><p>Backups who are sure to move on within the next five years are: Curtis McElhinney (37), Brian Elliott (35), Jaroslav Halak (35), Thomas Greiss (34), Anton Khudobin (34), Cory Schneider (34), Alex Stalock (33), Jonathan Bernier (32), James Reimer (32) and Mikko Koskinen (32).</p><p>The incubation period for goalies is typically five to eight years after being drafted. Bishop and Lundqvist are perfect examples.
