SWITCHING TO GLIDE
TWO OF THE PAST three drafts have been abbreviated affairs for the Caps (four picks each time) and the 2020 crop could be the same, depending on one conditional pick with San Jose. Washington does have its first-rounder, however, so there will be the chance for value. When you’re in your Stanley Cup window, that’s all you can ask for. IMMEDIATE NEEDS: The defense corps unravelled in the second half, casting aspersions on John Carlson’s Norris Trophy quest. This team needs more puck-movers and fewer battleships. Getting younger would help, too: Jonas Siegenthaler was the only regular in his early 20s – everyone else was pushing 30. LONG-TERM NEEDS: With Ilya Samsonov going from goalie of the future to goalie of the present in short order, the Caps’ roster is in great…
TWILIGHT IS LOOMING
AFTER PICKING IN the first round for the first time in five years, the Penguins are once again out of the top 31 thanks to a go-for-it trade deadline – this time Jason Zucker was the prize. This is a minor quibble, given that this team persevered through an incredible run of injuries and still managed to thrive in the…

Part of that dynamic group was Colangelo, who is an above-average skater with a big shot. He also has the requisite size to play in the NHL. “He has a power forward’s body,” said one scout, “but not necessarily a power forward’s tendencies. He has really good size and excellent release of the puck. It just flies off his stick.” Like almost all other players his age, Colangelo has to work on his consistency. And while his skating isn’t a…
