TANTALIZING TENDERS
YAROSLAV ASKAROV SKA-NEVA (RUS) THN Rank: 10th overall One of the best goalie prospects in a generation, Askarov is big, athletic and mentally sharp. Even though he had a rollercoaster world juniors, the fact a 17-year-old was starting in net for Russia says more than enough. CALLE CLANG ROGLE (SWE) THN Rank: 62nd overall Also big, Clang has excellent agility but doesn’t have the same level of mental toughness as Askarov. Nonetheless, he’s the top Swede in the class and has already been a staple on the national team for years. Takes up a lot of net, too. JOEL BLOMQVIST KARPAT OULU (FIN) THN Rank: 69th overall Finland has developed a lot of great goalies, and Blomqvist carries the torch for 2020. Talented and technically sound, Blomqvist was helped by playing on a dominant Karpat squad. Wouldn’t hurt if he grew…

Advertisers Shut-Out Social Media
Dear readers, In a story that was published towards the end of June, the New York Times reported a growing number of advertisers are boycotting social media and that “the primary target” is Facebook. The article said there is unease among some marketers with how Facebook handles “misinformation and hate speech.” The Anti-Defamation League keeps a running list of advertisers that are withholding their dollars from social media platforms at StopHateForProfit.org. Among the companies listed is Ford, a decades-long and valued advertiser with The Hockey News. Without this support, The Hockey News would not exist. Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets provide…

WASHINGTON CAPITALS
THE CAPITALS HAVEN’T changed much in the past couple seasons, meaning they’re still a dangerous contender for the Stanley Cup. Led by Alex Ovechkin and his 700-plus career goals, the offense is a top-five unit and gets contributions from all over. Jakub Vrana hit the 25-goal mark for the first time, while defenseman John Carlson was in Norris Trophy contention thanks in part to his prodigious output, which actually led all Caps skaters by a wide margin. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom can still do offensive damage, too. While the power play is surprisingly pedestrian, Washington’s penalty kill has been excellent thanks to the dogged efforts of Lars Eller and big blueliners Jonas Siegenthaler and Radko Gudas, among others. This is important, because the Capitals take a lot of penalties. Of course,…

Ready For The Encore
LAST JULY, ROUGHLY three weeks after he backstopped the St. Louis Blues to their first Stanley Cup, completing one of the unlikeliest success stories in NHL history, Jordan Binnington sat down in the lounge of a Toronto-area tennis club and mapped out his immediate future. This wasn’t some half-assed, back-of-the-napkin exercise. Upon showing up to meet with Andy Chiodo, his off-season goalie coach, Binnington promptly spread a stack of notebooks, folders and calendars onto the table, and produced a slick silver pen. “The kind of pen when you have a purpose,” Chiodo said. Over the next hour-and-a-half, Binnington took the lead in plotting every second of his summer schedule: when he would skate, what drills he would do, which areas he would focus on, how long he’d spend on vacation…each day…
