PASSED OVER AND POWERED UP

THE UNDERDOG STORY IS an oft-spread saga in sports, chronicling a player who was once overlooked but eventually fought his way to glory. While the vast majority of underdogs slip quietly into the night, Providence College left winger Jack Dugan is ready to make some noise. After posting 53 points in 49 games in his first year at Northwood Prep in Lake Placid, N.Y., the 6-foot-2, 192-pounder was disappointed when all 30 teams passed on him at the 2016 NHL draft. The following year, he drastically improved his output with 80 points in 47 games, yet he garnered just a smidgen of attention from scouts. He waited until 142nd overall before being selected in the fifth round by the Vegas Golden Knights in the organization’s first draft. In 2017-18, a 19-year-old Dugan…

GOALIE COACHING

MASK MENTORS

THERE’S A CASE TO be made that the genesis of goalie coaching began sometime in the 1950s in the hallways of St. Paul-Johnson high school in Minnesota. That’s where a student named Herb Brooks met a kid three years his senior named Warren Strelow. Both would go on to play at the University of Minnesota with no NHL glory after that. But Brooks would eventually become the coach of the Golden Gophers and, in the late 1970s, he reached out to Strelow for help. At the time, Strelow was coaching high-school hockey with the Mahtomedi Zephyrs in the suburbs of Saint Paul. When Brooks was named coach of the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team, he took Strelow along with him as his goalie coach. The rest is history. Officially, the first…

BUZZ

Jersey Hound

LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY | 2019-20 THE NEWEST DIV. I women’s hockey program hails from Long Island University, and they’ve got a jersey to be reckoned with. The LIU Sharks are the first of their name, since the university recently unified two campuses – the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds and LIU Post Pioneers. The Sharks nickname won out over Eagles and Falcons in a vote by students and alumni. The sweater is reminiscent of Sweden’s classic uniform, but with a really nice light blue to go with the gold. As for the logo itself, it’s a sharp shark. Put it all together and you’ve got a great look for a program that wasn’t afraid to take on big names like Wisconsin and Yale in its first season.…

NHL Team Reports

MRAZEK’S MOTOR FUELLED BY FANS

UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, PETR Mrazek would have been the story. He and Calgary goalie David Rittich had gone save-for-save all night, with Mrazek coming away with the win. Instead, the talk was about Andrei Svechnikov’s third-period heroics – his lacrosse-style goal and subsequent power-play tally three minutes later that led to Carolina’s 2-1 victory over Calgary on Oct. 29. Overlooked in the euphoria of the Svechnikov buzz was that Mrazek had just won his 14th consecutive game at PNC Arena, accomplishing the feat with the same kind of flair that has endeared him to the Hurricanes faithful and positioned him, for the first time in his NHL career, as a true No. 1 goalie. Fifteen months ago, his career was at a crossroads. After years of sharing Detroit’s crease with Jimmy Howard, Mrazek’s…
