Jersey Hound
LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY | 2019-20 THE NEWEST DIV. I women’s hockey program hails from Long Island University, and they’ve got a jersey to be reckoned with. The LIU Sharks are the first of their name, since the university recently unified two campuses – the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds and LIU Post Pioneers. The Sharks nickname won out over Eagles and Falcons in a vote by students and alumni. The sweater is reminiscent of Sweden’s classic uniform, but with a really nice light blue to go with the gold. As for the logo itself, it’s a sharp shark. Put it all together and you’ve got a great look for a program that wasn’t afraid to take on big names like Wisconsin and Yale in its first season.…
CHILLING OUT IN THE HEAT
ARIZONA COACH RICK TOCCHET learned everything he needed to know about Darcy Kuemper one day last January. Struggling to take the reins as the Coyotes’ starting goaltender after incumbent Antti Raanta went down with a season-ending knee injury, Kuemper knew he had to make the most of his opportunity. So he came to Tocchet with a promise: he would find a way to get his game on track. Looking back, Tocchet says he loves Kuemper for doing that. “He’s been lights-out since,” Tocchet said. “It’s never too late to establish yourself. He went from a backup to a No. 1 in less than a year. That’s a lot of credit to him and his strong-willed mentality. That’s a huge character trait for goaltenders.” From Jan. 6 onwards, Kuemper posted a 22-9-5 record to…
SCOUTING REPORT: Michael DiPietro
WHILE THATCHER DEMKO’S NHL career is just getting started, the Canucks have another ace goalie down in Utica with Michael DiPietro, the highly decorated junior star now in his first AHL season with the Comets. We asked former NHLer Curtis Sanford, a goaltending consultant for the Comets, to break down DiPietro’s game. MENTAL GAME "This may be his strongest point. He’s very resilient and has a lot of passion and energy. He is dialled in to what he wants to accomplish and where he wants to go, which, obviously, is the NHL one day.” ATHLETICISM "He's a great athlete. If I’m putting it on a scale of 1 to 10, he’s probably an eight right now. His lower-body strength enables him to play more aggressively, and he can cover more area because of it.…
JORDAN BINNINGTON Vs. MATT Murray
THIS SHOULD BE AN easy assignment. Compare two NHL goalies who are less than a year apart in age, but one is much bigger and also has an edge in athleticism, the use of his glove hand, rebound control and puckhandling. Case closed? Not so fast. The goalie with all the advantages is Matt Murray of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The other goalie in question is Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues. Despite Murray’s perceived superiority, the values of the two are very close. How can this be? Well, let’s see. CAREERS This comparison is strange. They were considered to be basically at the same level when they were drafted. Binnington was selected 88th overall in 2011 and Murray was taken 83rd in 2012. Both played two more years of junior after being…
