Montreal Canadiens
GREATEST GAMES OF ALL-TIME #1 JUNE 3, 1993MONTREAL 3, LOS ANGELES 2 (OT) A MEASURED RESPONSE The most famous stick measurement in NHL history changed the course of the ’93 Cup final DESPERATE TIMES CALL for desperate measures, and the Montreal Canadiens were desperate late in Game 2 of the 1993 Stanley Cup final. Los Angeles won Game 1 4-1 at the Montreal Forum and were leading 2-1 with less than two minutes to play in Game 2. That’s when Montreal coach Jacques Demers pulled an ace out of his sleeve and asked for a measurement of Marty McSorley’s stick. It showed the curve exceeded the legal limit and McSorley went to the penalty box at 18:15. Demers pulled goalie Patrick Roy for a 6-on-4 power play and, 32 seconds later, Eric Desjardins scored his…
Dallas Stars
GREATEST GAMES OF ALL-TIME #1 JUNE 4, 1999DALLAS 4, COLORADO 1 A DISPLAY OF DOMINATION The Stars turned the corner with a Game 7 wipeout of the Avson the way to the Stanley Cup in ’99 THE STARS WENT DEEP in the 1998 playoffs, but the Presidents’ Trophy winners were outmatched in the Western Conference final by Detroit, the eventual Cup champions. That summer, Dallas retooled to add Brett Hull and again were the league’s best team heading into the 1999 post-season. Facing Joe Sakic, Patrick Roy and the rest of the high-powered Colorado Avalanche in the West final, the Stars were up against it for the second straight year. Down 3-2 in the series after a Game 5 with an uncharacteristic 12 combined goals, Dallas staved off elimination with a Game 6 win in…
Minnesota Wild
GREATEST GAMES OF ALL-TIME #1 APRIL 30, 2014MINNESOTA 5, COLORADO 4 (OT) THE GAME 7 COMEBACK Four times, the Wild fell behind. Four times, they tied it up. Then, in overtime, they took the lead ON THE ROAD, IN a first-round series where the visiting team had not won a single game, the Wild had to rally from a one-goal deficit four times to force overtime in Game 7 before Nino Niederreiter, streaking down the right wing, silenced a stunned crowd in Colorado with a snipe off the net’s back camera. Mikko Koivu, Dany Heatley, Niederreiter and Jared Spurgeon scored the tying goals, the latter coming with 2:27 left in regulation, after Niederreiter won a puck battle and set up Spurgeon in the right circle. Spurgeon whipped the equalizer past Semyon Varlamov before a signature…
Carolina Hurricanes
GREATEST GAMES OF ALL-TIME #1 MAY 9, 2002CAROLINA 4, MONTREAL 3 (OT) THE ORIGINAL STORM SURGE The Hurricanes’ first appearance in the Stanley Cup final doesn’t happen without crazy comeback FOR ALL THE DRAMA associated with the Hurricanes’ run to the Cup in 2006, nothing compares to one crazy night in Montreal four years earlier, when an improbable comeback earned an unforgettable nickname and an entire series turned on a goal. Carolina entered the third period of Game 4 at the then-Molson Centre down 3-0 and facing a 3-1 series deficit, unable to crack Vezina and Hart Trophy winner Jose Theodore. Everything was closing in on them until Canadiens coach Michel Therrien took an unsportsmanlike penalty early in the third that turned a Carolina power play into a two-man advantage and provided the spark the…
