8. OTTAWA SENATORS
STANLEY CUP ODDS | 100/1 BEST-CASE SCENARIO The best the Senators can hope for this season is they put an end to their seemingly never-ending off-ice drama and their young players give them hope the franchise is headed on a positive path and not into an oncoming train. The good news in this is when you’re as dysfunctional on all levels as the Sens were in 2017-18, there’s not much further you can fall. Ottawa addressed one problem when it dealt Mike Hoffman, a talented offensive player who simply couldn’t be part of this group anymore. The Erik Karlsson situation will be resolved one way or another, with a trade looking like the most likely scenario. That will allow the Senators to move on from one of the darkest periods in their history…
The Season of Change
Dear readers, In 1972, I entered Grade 8 at Marymount High School in Montreal, and after making the football team, coach Lee Maybe welcomed me in a way I’ve never forgotten. “You are now a member of the team,” he said. STANLEY CUP ODDS | 80/1 BEST-CASE SCENARIO Not much is expected of the Rangers, as GM Jeff Gorton preps the franchise for a future built on the draft, rather than free agency. But we’ve seen rebuilding teams surprise in recent years, and New York has the foundation to make some noise. Despite the loss of Ryan McDonagh, the blueline still has a nice mix of veterans (Marc Staal), puck-movers (Brady Skjei) and veteran puck-movers (Kevin Shattenkirk). Up front, the Rangers can hurt teams with their depth. There is no one star to key in on, but instead a sturdy cohort led by Mats Zuccarello, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. Behind them are tiers of youngsters, from Vladislav Namestnikov, Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Buchnevich to rookies Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil. They may not…
