CALGARY FLAMES

When MARK JANKOWSKI was selected 21st overall in 2012, Flames GM Jay Feaster said the Quebec private school pivot had the potential to be the best pick in the draft. It took Jankowski five years to make a dent in the NHL, and his 17-goal campaign as a No. 3 center showed promise, including a four-goal game against Vegas on the last day of the season. Calgary is surely looking at a two-year bridge deal for the RFA. That’s because it will take the team past Matthew Tkachuk’s big negotiation in 2019 and the expiration of overpriced contracts for the likes of Troy Brouwer, Michael Stone and Michael Frolik. By then, when Jankowski is 25, the Flames will have a much better handle on what they have in him.…

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Whatever sting the Capitals feel this summer will be slightly mitigated by the fact they finally beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs. But all jokes aside, there will be upheaval. Washington doesn’t have a lot of cap space to play with, and it feels like a foregone conclusion No. 1 defenseman and pending UFA JOHN CARLSON will leave for the open market. NASHVILLE PREDATORS

The Predators have built a Presidents’ Trophy-winning powerhouse. To keep it intact long term, they must take a conservative approach this summer. Mike Fisher retired (again) this off-season, and fellow UFAs Scott Hartnell and Alexei Emelin aren’t great bets to return. GM David Poile will use his cap space to re-sign RFA JUUSE SAROS, one of the NHL’s top backup goalies, plus crash-and-bang RFA winger Ryan Hartman. Next summer, starting goalie Pekka Rinne and star blueliner Ryan Ellis become UFAs. Even if Rinne is deemed too old to keep by then, Ellis is a vital cog, so the Preds need to focus their attention on his extension.…
