COLORADO AVALANCHE

MIKKO RANTANEN is a 2019 RFA but can sign an extension July 1. Expect that to happen, as it will dictate GM Joe Sakic’s other off-season moves. After a breakout 84-point season, Rantanen will command Leon Draisaitl- or David Pastrnak-type money. Split the difference and Rantanen should come in at $7 million or more. Colorado has only minor decisions to make with its 2018 UFAs. Blake Comeau is a useful depth forward but he’s replaceable. The same goes for veteran backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Instead of spending millions to retain those two players, Sakic should pool his funds in pursuit of a younger, higher-impact UFA.…

OTTAWA SENATORS

MARK STONE has emerged as the Senators’ most consistent offensive producer – put him down for at least 25 goals and 60 points next season – and one of their best two-way forwards. As such, he’ll want to be paid accordingly. If he elects for arbitration, the team has the option of choosing a two-year deal. If he does not and the team elects to take him to arbitration, Stone has the option of accepting a one-year deal. Look for one of those two things to happen while both sides work on trying to strike a longterm deal before the arbitration decision comes down. The Senators could also extend Erik Karlsson’s contract after July 1, but a lot of signs point to them trading their superstar captain instead.…

JAMES NEAL VS. JAMES VAN RIEMSDYK

JULY 1 IS WIDELY referred to in hockey circles as Free Agency Day. A more appropriate title for the managements of the 31 NHL clubs may be Judgment Day. The decisions made on that day can have long-term implications. Which UFAs do you pursue and which do you pass on? Ownerships and fan bases are often impatient to obtain the one particular type of player who will “put the team over the top.” The price of UFA acquisitions will be high – in terms of money, length of contract and restrictive no-trade or no-movement clauses. What looks like an ideal short-term fix can have nightmare long-term consequences. It may be preferable to start building a program with very few good players, as compared to a situation where your roster is…

NASHVILLE PREDATORS

The Predators have built a Presidents’ Trophy-winning powerhouse. To keep it intact long term, they must take a conservative approach this summer. Mike Fisher retired (again) this off-season, and fellow UFAs Scott Hartnell and Alexei Emelin aren’t great bets to return. GM David Poile will use his cap space to re-sign RFA JUUSE SAROS, one of the NHL’s top backup goalies, plus crash-and-bang RFA winger Ryan Hartman. Next summer, starting goalie Pekka Rinne and star blueliner Ryan Ellis become UFAs. Even if Rinne is deemed too old to keep by then, Ellis is a vital cog, so the Preds need to focus their attention on his extension.…
