CWHL’S RED RISING

THEY’RE AN EXPANSION franchise in a non-traditional market that boasts a top scorer, some breakout talent and a near-unbeatable netminder. They’re also playoff bound with surprisingly good odds to win it all. No, they’re not the Vegas Golden Knights. They’re the CWHL’s Kunlun Red Star, though Brenda Andress can understand the confusion. “That’s a pretty good comparable, isn’t it?” said the league commissioner. No doubt, a second-place finish has made Red Star, with its league-leading performances from Kelli Stack and netminder Noora Raty, impossible to ignore in the seven-team circuit. SMALL ICE, BIG BENEFIT

TOMAS PERIC HAS SPENT the past couple years regaling anyone who will listen on the benefits of cross-ice and half-ice hockey for young players. He has a PhD and a doctorate in education and is a professor in the faculty of physical education and sports at Charles University in Prague. He has spoken at hockey summits all over the world, and while he doesn’t have all the answers, he is emphatic about one thing. “The worst structure is 5-on-5 on full ice,” Peric says in his presentation. “Five-on-5 is not the best for any skill.” Peric has a legion of disciples around the world, many who hold the levers of power in youth hockey in their countries. There is a mountain of evidence that suggests cross-ice hockey for kids aged five and…
