ASK THE EXPERTS

YOU SEE THEM on TV all the time talking about players and teams, so they know their stuff, right? Hockey pools are a different beast and these NHL analysts have mixed results in fantasy leagues. More often than not, though, they have a good sense for the game and the people who make up the sport. We asked them these 20 questions. JEREMY ROENICK STUDIO ANALYST NHL ON NBC The crafty center from Boston made a smooth transition to the broadcast booth. His views on NBC hockey telecasts are always candid, sometimes controversial. J.R. ranks among career leaders in points by U.S.-born players. He’s not in the Hall of Fame, but his name is always in the conversation. PETER MCNAB TV COLOR ANALYST COLORADO He had six consecutive seasons of at least 30 goals (including two…

THE NEXT GREAT PP QUARTERBACK

MIDWAY THROUGH 2014-15, I received a text from a member of my hockey pool. A Flyers fan. He wanted to pick up some guy named Shayne Gostisbehere, a recent Flyers call-up from the AHL. The only problem: he wasn’t available on ESPN’s player list yet. So the guy made a desperate plea to the commissioner (me) to make sure no one claimed him. I didn’t even know who Gostisbehere was. The guy dropped a player and left an empty roster spot for Gostisbehere while I took note if he did anything to add the points later. A ghost spot for a ghost player whose nickname is ‘The Ghost.’ Pretty fitting. So was his phantom stats line in his two-game stint in 2014-15: 0 goals, 0 points. Fast forward one year and I…

INSTANT IMPACT

AUSTON MATTHEWS DOMINATED as a member of the U.S. National Team Development program, and blazed a trail with an impressive showing in Switzerland’s National League A, and there’s no reason to believe his NHL debut will be anything less than Calder-worthy. Of all rookies this season, Matthews, an early pick in pools everywhere, will deliver the most impact because he has all the tools. He’s at once a sniper, playmaker, power forward and slick puck handler, and you can pencil Matthews in to center one of the Maple Leafs’ top two lines. The only decision for Toronto coach Mike Babcock to make is determining who will flank him, though William Nylander and Mitch Marner appear to have the inside track. The excitement level around Matthews deservingly sits high, because his tenure with…
