DIAMOND DAYS FOR SUBBAN
Put him in, coach, he’s ready to play. P.K. Subban is on his way to Nashville – assuming the Blue Jays don’t steal him away.
AN EXPANSION TEAM LIKE NO OTHER
WITH MATT LARKIN @THNMATTLARKIN ANY SMUG PROGNOSTICATOR convinced Las Vegas’ NHL franchise will be a laughing stock has a head start. It’s an expansion team, after all, and recent NHL history tells us brand-new franchises normally fall flat on their faces. The San Jose Sharks joined the NHL 25 years ago and won a combined 28 games in their first two seasons. The Ottawa Senators arrived a year later and won 24 games over their first two years. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators… each of those franchises wobbled out of the womb like a baby calf. The 1993-94 Florida Panthers set the gold standard of modern expansion club respectability, and even they didn’t even finish .500, going 33-34-17. None of those teams made…
MEET THE TRAINERS
MATT NICHOL BIG CLIENTS Tyler Seguin, Mike Cammalleri, Wayne Simmonds There’s a lot of noise in the training world, and for an experienced vet such as Nichol, it’s important to straddle the line between innovation and data clutter. “Everything has been about analytics lately, and that has trickled down to sport science and guys like me,” he said. “But the fundamentals are still really important. That has been my revelation.” Nichol’s first concern when the summer arrives is to make sure his client-athletes are actually ready to perform. He does this through musculoskeletal assessments. Players may come into Nichol’s care with a specific off-season goal – gain five pounds of muscle, increase their explosiveness – but it becomes irrelevant if the client isn’t ready. A bad knee, poor sleep patterns or nutrition and…
OFF-SEASON WINNERS & LOSERS
FLORIDA PANTHERS Florida signed just about everybody this summer, didn’t they? The most important transaction was an extension for cornerstone D-man AARON EKBLAD but that was just one of many moves. Grabbing KEITH YANDLE from the Rangers and then signing the D-man to a long-term contract kicked things off, but GM Tom Rowe wasn’t done with his blueline. JASON DEMERS was also brought on board via free agency, while MARK PYSYK came by trade from Buffalo. Add in a solid backup goalie in JAMES REIMER and an underrated depth forward in JONATHAN MARCHESSAULT and you’ve got a division-winning team that got even better over the summer. SAN JOSE SHARKS Usually it’s hard to keep a titlecontending team together, but if anything, the Sharks made gains early on this summer. The biggest prize? MIKKEL BOEDKER, whose…
