A backup goalie for the Edmonton Oilers that 1979-80 NHL season, Corsi&rsquo;s went 8-14-3 with a 3.65 goals-against average in 26 games. The league didn&rsquo;t even track save percentage in a formal fashion.</p><p>Fast-forward 35 years later and the word Corsi has become synonymous with stats analytic junkies who crave additional facts and figures to explain why certain players are more valuable than others on the ice. Fancy stats have become all the rage among believers. They&rsquo;re also a lightning rod for critics who brush them off as unnecessary layers of random statistical propaganda.</p><p>Corsi played for a bit in Italy after his NHL stint, went into coaching and later developed the Corsi stat to measure how hard goalies worked in readying for shots that weren&rsquo;t just on net, but that were blocked or went wide. There are other analytic stats out there, and in this Poolbook annual, Dobber Hockey pool guru Darryl Dobbs examines which ones might become part of fantasy leagues in the future.</p><p>You&rsquo;ll notice in the Power Zone section on team pages, we replaced arcane plus-minus team leaders with leaders in Corsi Close and offensive zone start rates. We don&rsquo;t necessarily expect these analytic stats to become part of your fantasy league, but cagey poolies can use strong underlying numbers to see which players drive possession and are more likely to be productive in offensive situations.</p><p>Corsi has come a long way in 35 years. He didn&rsquo;t become Edmonton&rsquo;s goalie of the future, but he did register three assists, including one on a goal by Wayne Gretzky. And now he&rsquo;s making a lot of points with stats gurus.</p><p>Let us know what you think about advanced stats. He&rsquo;s a great late-round flier, but he needs some filling out to do, so he could start 2014-15 in the American League. If your team is loaded with stars already and you aren&rsquo;t depending on one of these two to carry you, go with Skinner. He&rsquo;s a two-time 30-goal man and he&rsquo;s still only 22. He&rsquo;s one of the game&rsquo;s elite talents, and the decline in St-Louis&rsquo; production once he joined the Rangers tells you Stamkos made him better, not the other way around. Stamkos scored 11 goals in 20 games after the St-Louis trade, a 45-goal pace, and that was after returning from a broken leg. A healthy Stamkos easily pots 50. He&rsquo;s a top-three overall pick.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p></div>

FANTASY COMES TRUE

It was a time when tweets came from your pet budgie, smart phones meant push button rather than rotary, and Instagrams came from Polaroid cameras.</p><p>It was also a time when Jim Corsi was known best as a goalie coach and hockey pool information arrived from The Hockey News in your mailbox &ndash; the one by your front door.</p><p>The hottest hockey fantasy information in the 1995-96 preseason was that Dave Roche, a 55-goal scorer for Windsor in the Ontario League and a tough guy to boot, was going to play on a line with Mario Lemieux. Every poolie who had done research had him highly rated as a sleeper and proudly picked him before someone else got him. A raw rookie with no professional experience, he had just one point in his first 13 games. He came around in the playoffs, though, and was sixth in scoring on a Penguins team loaded with future Hall of Famers. They would succumb to the Florida Panthers in seven games in the &lsquo;Year of the Rat.&rsquo; Roche went on to put up good goal and penalty minute numbers in the minors, but never got another shot at the NHL.</p><p>Things have changed slightly in 20 years. Roche is at peace on his waterfront home near Peterborough, Ont., though he probably wishes someone would stop using him as an example. Corsi is better known for a stat named after him than his coaching. Information comes across Twitter feeds seconds after it happens, and we can check any line combination in any game even while it&rsquo;s still being played. What technology hasn&rsquo;t given us is a sure-fire way to predict linemates prior to upcoming seasons.</p><p>Despite 20 years of history repeating itself, we&rsquo;re still all over any hint that a certain player is going to play with the big boys on the top line. An edge, any kind of edge, is worth our time. The problem is, we still tend to put too much stock in the information. This year, more than any in recent memory, there&rsquo;s a lot of instability on the top lines of a lot of teams. We&rsquo;ll go through them, with the options available, and see if we can&rsquo;t find an edge.</p><p>The first thing to know is that none of these are sure things. They&rsquo;re sleeper potentials, speculative picks or cheap options in a salary cap league.</p><p>Nowadays it&rsquo;s more duos than trios at the top of the lineup. Look around the league. Teams have two dominant scorers, not three, and they stick together. It&rsquo;s not that the third members don&rsquo;t matter, it&rsquo;s just that they don&rsquo;t matter as much.</p><p>Often their value is defensive, and often they sit down when the power play comes on. Ask Alexandre Burrows, a third wheel with the Sedins who scored plenty of goals at even strength, but had a front row seat for the power play.</p><p>If they&rsquo;re too good offensively, teams may want to balance their scoring. Everybody wants a strong second scoring line. Why put Evgeni Malkin with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz when you can have two top lines instead of one?</p><p>Even so, we still want to know the add-on for a dynamic duo because they&rsquo;re still going to reap benefits statistically. The best example is Pascal Dupuis, an effective player who has been a mediocre scorer his career. Thanks to Crosby and Kunitz, he suddenly became a good scorer and is viewed as a better player because of them. He&rsquo;ll have to win the Calder Trophy to do it, an achievable objective since he&rsquo;ll likely be playing next season with Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli on &lsquo;That 70s line.&rsquo;</p><p>Not since Hall of Famer Ken Dryden, who won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1971 and then was named rookie of the year in 1972, has a player had his name engraved on the Cup before winning the Calder Trophy. The only three other players to accomplish the feat were Gaye Stewart (Cup in 1942 and Calder in &rsquo;43 with the Toronto Maple Leafs), Danny Grant (Cup in 1968 with the Canadiens and Calder in &rsquo;69 with the Minnesota North Stars) and Tony Esposito (Cup in 1969 with the Canadiens and Calder in &rsquo;70 with the Chicago Black Hawks). Stewart, Grant and Esposito were all spare parts in their teams&rsquo; Cup runs, while Dryden was a stalwart, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy.</p><p>Pearson wasn&rsquo;t that good for the Kings, but he was terrific at times. He worked his way into the top six on the line with Carter and Toffoli. And although he didn&rsquo;t earn a point in the Stanley Cup final, you&rsquo;d have been hard pressed to find a better player on the ice than Pearson was in Game 4 when he was a beast in the offensive zone and had at least twice as many shots as any other player on either team with eight.</p><p>Pearson will have some stiff competition for the Calder, but if he stays healthy and keeps playing in the Kings&rsquo; top six, there&rsquo;s no reason not to expect significant production from him this season. His former linemate in the Quebec League, Jonathan Drouin, hung back with Halifax after going two picks later, and that was no indictment of his burgeoning skills. Drouin will be a hot commodity in Tampa Bay this season, but who will join him among Calder hopefuls? Here&rsquo;s a look at some of the stars of tomorrow and projections when you might see them in the NHL, plus how old they will be as rookies.</p><h2><b>2014-15</b></h2><h3><b>JONATHAN DROUIN, LW, 19</b></h3><p>He&rsquo;s done all he can at the junior level. The NHL awaits. Even though Tampa&rsquo;s top-six is crowded, Drouin has gamebreaking skill.</p><h3><b>MAX DOMI, C, 19</b></h3><p>Phoenix doesn&rsquo;t have an ultra-skilled forward like Domi, so there&rsquo;s a spot for him. His short frame is tough to defend.</p><h3><b>ALEXANDER WENNBERG, C, 20</b></h3><p>The skilled Swede has stated his intention to come over and fight for a job. And given how highly the Jackets regard him, the NHL is a good bet.</p><h3><b>LEON DRAISAITL, C, 19</b></h3><p>The type of big, talented center every team craves, Draisaitl is a late birthday, so he can jump straight from the draft and bring a little experience, too.</p><h3><b>JOHNNY GAUDREAU, LW, 21</b></h3><p>The &lsquo;Johnny Hockey&rsquo; show made a one-game debut last season. Devastatingly skilled and speedy, Gaudreau brings big talent in a small package.</p><h2><b>2015-16</b></h2><h3><b>CONNOR MCDAVID, C, 18</b></h3><p>There&rsquo;s just a wee bit of hype surrounding McDavid, an offensively dynamic player who even Sidney Crosby said reminded him of Sidney Crosby. Go straight to the NHL, young man.</p><h3><b>JACK EICHEL, C, 19</b></h3><p>McDavid&rsquo;s competition in the 2015 draft will be incoming Boston University freshman Eichel. The big, talented center will likely play just one NCAA season before the NHL calls.</p><h3><b>SAM BENNETT, LW, 19</b></h3><p>His range of talents makes him a candidate to jump straight from the draft in 2014-15. But chances are, the Flames won&rsquo;t risk rushing him.</p><h3><b>TEUVO TERAVAINEN, C, 21</b></h3><p>Is it not &lsquo;Teuvo Time&rsquo; yet? Perhaps we&rsquo;ll see the gifted playmaker this season, but Chicago doesn&rsquo;t plan on rushing the Finnish star. If it takes a year in AHL Rockford, so be it.</p><h3><b>ANDRE BURAKOVSKY, LW, 20</b></h3><p>The Washington pick could stay in Erie or go to AHL Hershey, meaning the NHL is one more season away. He&rsquo;s certainly got the puck skills, so he&rsquo;s in the same boat as Teravainen.</p><h3><b>MICHAEL DAL COLLE, LW, 19</b></h3><p>Dal Colle has incredible skills and smarts, but needs seasoning. Plus, his 6-foot-2 frame can hold more pounds so another year in Oshawa will help before he cracks the Islanders&rsquo; lineup.</p><h2><b>2016-17</b></h2><h3><b>LUKE KIRWAN, LW, 19</b></h3><p>A Team USA product heading to OHL Windsor, Kirwan is a gifted power forward with a late birthday who will go straight from the draft after two seasons with the Spitfires.</p><h3><b>NOAH HANIFIN, D, 19</b></h3><p>The third member of the insane triumvirate at the top of the 2015 draft, Hanifin is a franchise D-man who will likely play two years at Boston College before jumping to the NHL.</p><h3><b>JAKUB VRANA, LW, 20</b></h3><p>The Czech star will be seeing more time with the pros in the Swedish League, so why not let him develop there? Once he&rsquo;s ready, Vrana brings a wicked shot and great speed.</p><h3><b>MATT BARZAL, C, 19</b></h3><p>A No. 1 pick in the WHL bantam draft, Barzal is a playmaker who will rack up points in Seattle as he prepares his 5-foot-11 frame for the pro ranks.</p><h3><b>RYAN MACINNIS, C, 20</b></h3><p>Scouts love this 2014 pick&rsquo;s responsible nature and talent, but the son of Al MacInnis needs to get stronger. The good news is that once he does, he&rsquo;ll have a 6-foot-4 man&rsquo;s body.</p><h2><b>2017-18</b></h2><h3><b>DYLAN STROME, C, 20</b></h3><p>Once McDavid leaves Erie, it will be Strome&rsquo;s team. Ryan&rsquo;s younger brother has a great frame to grow into and has the family&rsquo;s hockey sense and skill.</p><h3><b>OLIVER KYLINGTON, D, 20</b></h3><p>Already playing against men in Sweden, Kylington is an incredible skater who can develop at home for a couple years.</p><h3><b>TRAVIS KONECNY, C, 20</b></h3><p>Undersized but determined and gritty, Konecny was a first-overall pick in the OHL and has incredible moves. His frame puts him on a longer track.</p><h3><b>TYLER BENSON, LW, 19</b></h3><p>Benson has great vision and works hard every shift. He&rsquo;ll be a big part of the Vancouver Giants&rsquo; rebuild once he joins them.</p><h3><b>PAVEL ZACHA, LW, 20</b></h3><p>The Czech is developing his power forward game back home and will get great minutes until he comes to North America.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

This year, <b><i>Jake Allen</i></b> will pay off similarly. He&rsquo;s guaranteed a job and will post outstanding numbers with the stellar Blues defense in front of him.</p><h3><b>&hellip;TYLER SEGUIN?</b></h3><p>RETURN TO GRACE</p><p>Boston was silly to give up on Tyler Seguin. He was too talented to stay down after a poor year, and he was just 21. Dallas jumped at the chance to get him, and he finished fourth in league scoring. Watch for a bounce-back from <b><i>Eric Staal</i></b>. A 61-point campaign after eight straight seasons at a pace of 70 or more? Toss it out. He&rsquo;s still just 29.</p><h3><b>&hellip;P.K. SUBBAN?</b></h3><p>FROM STAR TO SUPERSTAR</p><p>Subban&rsquo;s Norris Trophy in 2012-13 was no fluke. He was a dominant force in 2013-14 and will be among the league&rsquo;s top D-men for years to come. In just his second season, watch for <b><i>Nathan MacKinnon</i></b> to make a leap into the elite. Hyperbole? Not if you watched him in the 2014 playoffs. He gains steam with the puck like a young Pavel Bure. In addition, MacKinnon has a great supporting cast in Colorado and could be a top-10 scorer as soon as this year.</p><h3><b>&hellip;JAROME IGINLA?</b></h3><p>FREE AGENT BOOM</p><p>It&rsquo;s a night-and-day change for <b><i>Christian Ehrhoff</i></b> going from Buffalo to Pittsburgh. He&rsquo;ll inherit the departed Matt Niskanen&rsquo;s minutes and should post his best numbers in years on a potent offensive club.</p><h3><b>&hellip;DAVID CLARKSON?</b></h3><p>FREE AGENT BUST</p><p>The Panthers will pay <b><i>Dave Bolland</i></b> like a star at $5.5 million per, but don&rsquo;t let that fool you into thinking he&rsquo;s a viable fantasy commodity. He&rsquo;s injury-prone and a better player in real life than in fantasy pools.</p><h3><b>&hellip;CRAIG ANDERSON?</b></h3><p>MAJOR GOALIE REGRESSION</p><p>Anderson&rsquo;s regression was primarily because of health, and <b><i>Ben Scrivens</i></b> is a red flag because the Oilers are terrible defensively. It got great feedback. This year, we showcase two more pools.</p><p>During the fall of 1978, Greg Williamson, alongside Bob Milloy, Rick Wallis, Lloyd Johansen, Bob Favelle and Jeff Foster, started a keeper league in which teams retained players year-to-year, like an NHL franchise. The six fantasy freaks, based out of greater Vancouver, dubbed their version of an original six the &ldquo;IHL&rdquo; (Innocuous Hockey League). &ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t really have a word for the &lsquo;I&rsquo;,&rdquo; Williamson says. &ldquo;So it was inane or innocuous or idiotic.&rdquo;</p><p>The IHL, which has expanded to 13 teams, plays a balanced weekly head-to-head schedule. The top seven squads make the playoffs, and the finalists battle in a two-week match for the Skobotski Cup, named after made-up hockey legend Bobby Skobotski. Deemed the hardest trophy to win in sports, it&rsquo;s also the heaviest, weighing 60 pounds. &ldquo;The Skobotski is pretty awesome,&rdquo; Williamson says. &ldquo;I used to work as a millwright&rsquo;s apprentice, so I built it out of cold steel. It&rsquo;s a barrel about two-and-a-half feet long, with a cup-shaped fitting on top and handles welded onto the sides. It&rsquo;s ugly, but it&rsquo;s beautiful.&rdquo;</p><p>During a two-week final one year, Bill McDowell, well ahead of Rob Serraglio (defending champion at the time), took it upon himself to visit Rob&rsquo;s house while Rob was at work. &ldquo;Part of the deal with the trophy is when you win it, it has to be prominently displayed in your living room, just to kind of tick off the wives,&rdquo; Williamson says.</p><p>McDowell, who figured he&rsquo;d already won, took the Cup from Serraglio. Not only did McDowell end up losing to Serraglio in the final, but, as &ldquo;punishment for his sins,&rdquo; he is now responsible for putting the winner&rsquo;s name on a plaque on the trophy every year.</p><p>Despite the occasional controversy, the IHL has always been about fun. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no entry fee, there&rsquo;s no money won at the end of the season, it&rsquo;s all about bragging rights and bulls---,&rdquo; Williamson says. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re just a bunch of old farts having fun, with hockey and friendship as the basis.&rdquo;</p><p>This same measure of camaraderie and friendship marks the relationship of Nick Malandruccolo, Joe DiTomaso, Louis Cortina, Joe Laranjo, Paolo Zaccheo, Johnny Palleria, Steve Karaminas, Claudio Masella, Giacomo D&rsquo;Agostino and Mike Tempone. They make up the Montreal-based NHL Franchise Boys, a league into its 20th season. &ldquo;We had no notion of other pools,&rdquo; Malandruccolo says. &ldquo;We decided we&rsquo;ll try to get a few people that were interested and committed to a franchise pool where we get to keep a certain amount of players every year.&rdquo;</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-021401/9932444-1-eng-US/f0013-022.jpg" title="f0013-02" width="671" height="467"><figcaption class="caption-body">NHL FRANCHISE <b>BOYS</b> <span class="photo-credit">(GIACOMO D&rsquo;AGOSTINO)</span></figcaption><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-031011/9932437-1-eng-US/f0013-032.jpg" title="f0013-03" width="386" height="737"></div><p>On their website, <a href="http://nhlfranchiseboys.com">nhlfranchiseboys.com</a>, you&rsquo;ll find a detailed record of stats, trades and free agent signings. You&rsquo;ll also find a lengthy constitution, which is &ldquo;thicker than most companies&rsquo; prospectus and financial reports,&rdquo; as Zaccheo puts it.</p><p>The Franchise Boys play for money, but that hasn&rsquo;t gotten in the way of what has become an important part of their lives. Their shared passion has kept this band of brothers together for years. And the bond comes in handy as each member endures ups and downs in his personal life. The day after making his final moves for season 13, Karaminas suffered a stroke. &ldquo;Everything stopped then, it didn&rsquo;t matter what happened,&rdquo; Malandruccolo says. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s when we realized this is not just friends playing. This is family.&rdquo;</p><p>Karaminas recovered and the hockey family is as tight as ever, so tight that nothing can get in way of the pool. Cortina&rsquo;s daughter is getting married this fall. Her original date was Oct. 1, but Louis had her change it to the 15th, so as not to interfere with draft weekend. Now that&rsquo;s dedication.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

By the time actual free agency arrived, a truckload of contracts only needed their i&rsquo;s dotted and t&rsquo;s crossed. Teams spent more than $500 million on Day 1, annihilating the record of $384 million set in 2009. All the biggest fish were caught July 1, from Thomas Vanek to Paul Stastny to the wildly overpaid ex-Penguins &lsquo;D&rsquo; trio of Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik and Deryk Engelland. The remaining UFA pool consists mostly of spare parts, but has a few notable names.</p><p>The one that jumps off the page is Martin Brodeur&rsquo;s. The winningest goalie in NHL history decided to test the open market after spending his entire career with New Jersey. But after Vancouver, Calgary, and the New York Islanders opened their wallets for younger starters Ryan Miller, Jonas Hiller and Jaroslav Halak, Brodeur&rsquo;s options are limited.</p><p>Rugged veterans litter the list of available defensemen. A team looking for depth and toughness can reach out to Douglas Murray, Sheldon Brookbank or Cory Sarich. Enigmatic, talented puck-mover Michael Del Zotto, just 24, will attract interest if the price is reasonable.</p><p>Remaining forwards carry question marks. Will Daniel Alfredsson return with the Wings? Can Dany Heatley be a 20-goal scorer again? What does Ray Whitney have left? How serious are Mike Ribeiro&rsquo;s office problems? Call it &ldquo;advanced stats,&rdquo; &ldquo;fancy stats&rdquo; or &ldquo;moneypuck.&rdquo; It all boils down to the same thing: more accurate information about a player&rsquo;s contributions to his team, going deeper than common numbers like goals and points.</p><p>Thanks to websites like <a href="http://be-hindthenet.ca">be-hindthenet.ca</a> and <a href="http://extraskater.com">extraskater.com</a>, fans have all the information they need on a player or team right at their fingertips.</p><p>Corsi is the most common advanced stat in hockey. Current Blues goalie coach Jim Corsi started it when he was with Buffalo. He took the plusminus stat, which is generally considered useless by poolies, and expanded on it. Rather than goals-for versus goals-against, it looks at shot attempts-for versus shot attempts-against. So, Corsi is missed shots plus blocked shots plus shots on goal. It provides a greater sample size, which better indicates how a player&rsquo;s team controls the play when he&rsquo;s on the ice.</p><p>We can also now look at info such as a player&rsquo;s zone starts over any portion of a season. What percentage of shifts did he start in the offensive zone, and how many of those ended in his own zone? Then there&rsquo;s CorsiRelQoC (relative Corsi quality of competition), which measures the quality of opponents a player lines up against. This stat takes his Corsi and adjusts it relative to a team&rsquo;s Corsi while he was off the ice, then adjusts for the quality of a player&rsquo;s opponents. CorsiRelQoC uses an average of this number for the five players on the opposition who are on the ice against the player you are studying. A higher number indicates that your player is playing a higher level of competition. This statistic is generally regarded as the soundest measurement of a player&rsquo;s competitive value.</p><p>As far as advanced stats go, when it comes to fantasy hockey, they aren&rsquo;t common and may not be for several years. That many leagues have introduced hits, blocks and faceoff wins suggests poolies are ready for the new wave. Corsi will probably come next, replacing plus-minus in fantasy leagues to create more realism. It tabulates shots directed toward an opposing goal, including missed nets and blocked attempts.</i></p> <span class="photo-credit">(CORSI: BILL WIPPERT)</span></figcaption></div><p>The advanced statistic I look at the most in my pre-season prep work is dubbed &ldquo;PDO.&rdquo; What it stands for is a mystery &ndash; its creator Brian King admits that &ndash; but it&rsquo;s a measure of luck. Theory says if you were to add up the team&rsquo;s shooting percentage when a player is on the ice with a team&rsquo;s save percentage when he&rsquo;s on the ice, the number will, over time, approach 1,000. A player with a number of 950 is probably in for some better luck in the season ahead. And by the same token, a player with a number of 1,085 has been enjoying a lopsided amount of lucky bounces. So if you take the PDO numbers that jump out at you the most, you can drill down further and look at the team&rsquo;s shooting percentage while the player is on the ice.
