A LICENSE TO COLLECT

EVEN THE MOST AVID HOCKEY fans and memorabilia collectors wouldn’t think their next cool collectable was bolted to their trunk. But that’s what Anthony Kentris saw when he started transforming vintage license plates into collages of hockey logos. Call it licensed decor. “For someone in their adult years, it’s a more elegant way to show your pride for your team,” said Kentris, a Toronto-based designer and owner of the online store, Route 401, where he sells his work. “It’s not something juvenile like putting up a poster. It’s an art piece that fits into your house because it looks rustic and unique.” Kentris (photo inset) handcrafts all of the one-of-a-kind pieces in his downtown condo. His work ranges from hockey logos, to city skylines, to maps of Canada. His take on NHL…

THE BEST OF THE REST

THE NHL IS THE BEST LEAGUE IN the world, and thanks to fallen prejudice no corner of the globe goes unchecked by team scouts. But every year, a Damien Brunner or Viktor Fasth comes over, seemingly out of nowhere. And there are plenty of drafted gems honing their games overseas. With that in mind, here’s a look at our all-Euro team for 2013-14. The criteria? Players can’t be from North America (sorry, Kevin Dallman) and cannot have spurned the NHL (Ilya Koval-chuk). Also, there has to be some chance of them coming over here, so no players nearing the ends of their careers. MICHAEL KERANEN, RW, ILVES (FIN.) The 24-year-old is a late bloomer who has a great shot and loves to use it. The only point-per-game regular in the Finnish League,…

THIS DUCK’S RISE IS MIGHTY

THE YEAR WAS 2009, WHICH NOW seems a lifetime ago. In the midst of a second-half push to make the playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks sent two players from their Cup-winning squad two years prior, winger Travis Moen and defenseman Kent Huskins, to San Jose for two little-known prospects. Timo Pielmeier is a goalie who had one nightmarish 2011 game with the Ducks and has now found his way back to his native Germany. Nick Bonino, meanwhile, is finding his way in the NHL just fine. Bonino was the piece Anaheim coveted. Now he’s broken through in 2013-14, delivering his first 20-goal season and putting up numbers that far surpass anything he’d produced to date. “It’s a nice feeling,” Bonino said. “It’s good to be able to put up some goals and produce…
