SOCHI – All right, the first order of business here is a new nickname. Hockey players of either gender have a penchant for taking a person’s last name and shortening it. But clearly, ‘Pou’ isn’t going to cut it. Not anymore. We’re going to lead the suggestion parade with ‘Phil’ or ‘Poolie.’ This is now necessary because life will never be the same for Marie-Philip Poulin. For an entire hockey-mad country, she is a national hero. For thousands of little hockey playing girls in the country, Poulin is their generation’s Paul Henderson. No longer will she be able to walk the halls of Boston University, where she plans to return next season to finish her psychology degree, without her fellow students knowing who she is. GENIUS UNDER FIRE

SOCHI – At his last news conference as coach of Canada’s 2014 Olympic team, Mike Babcock seemed distracted. As the first question was being asked, he was looking at the score sheet and furrowing his brow. Then he mumbled something about how the ice time statistics seemed all wrong. That’s the way Babcock rolls. It’s that kind of attention to detail that makes him so successful. It will make him a good bet for the Hall of Fame as a builder someday and it was what made Canada’s 2014 Olympic team the most dominant outfit it has ever produced. When Babcock found out the players wouldn’t be allowed to skate during the summer training camp, he had them put on sneakers and run drills ball hockey style. Everyone laughed about that.…

Toews won 56.7 percent of his faceoffs and his only goal was an important one: a redirection from Jeff Carter to open the scoring against Sweden in what would stand as the game-winning tally to clinch gold.
